(ESP-ENG) Locke & Key, la serie que pudo ser y no lo fue // Locke & Key, the series that could have been and wasn't!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
A couple of days ago I decided to finish watching the third and last season of this series because I had already seen the previous two and therefore I had to close that cycle with this series that was called to be one of the great and expensive productions of Netflix. I'm not going to lie and the truth is that when this story was released in its first season it caught my attention because it was something new, fantasy but with a touch of suspense and terror that did not fall into the macabre, the thing is that it was a pretty good season actually. But then came the second and finally the third and I feel, because this is a very personal opinion, that everything was deflating and that magic that we saw in the first installment had disappeared.
With all this I am not saying that it is a series that is not worth watching, if it is worth it because it is one that is very well done with which you can entertain you enough and spend time without problems, in the end it is a very familiar series. You have to know that this story comes from a comic which I have not had the opportunity to read but it looks very good, usually in the series are omitted and things that may be relevant within the same comic are left out. This will be a very brief review since we are talking about three seasons which went from more to less and to talk a lot in detail would be eternal so without further ado let's see what this peculiar story is about.
Basically we are before the Locke family composed of Nina (Darby Stanchfield) who is the mother and her three children Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) who in turn are children of Randall Locke who was murdered. After that event they decide to return to what has been the Locke family mansion for hundreds of years in order to try to overcome that loss. What they do not know is that in every corner of that great old house are hidden a series of magical keys that have unthinkable abilities, abilities that defy the human mind, physics and even human understanding, but most importantly, they are keys that will eventually help to understand all the past of his deceased father and his own death.
They communicate with the brothers through whispers so that they can find them. To give you an idea of some of the powers of these keys, which are more than ten I think, are the ability to become a ghost, enter the memories of the person, open a door and appear anywhere in the world you've seen, travel through time, create fire or vegetation out of nothing and a long etcetera more. From here and with the knowledge of these keys, the plot begins, which will be full of demons, a supernatural fiction, a family drama and above all a constant search for answers by this family to understand the world and the mysticism that these keys hide and what is the final connection with his father.
Why the title of this post? - Locke & Key came to Netflix as a project that in theory was going to last quite a long time, last year those in charge of the series were talking about four seasons and even more but something changed and they decided to end it in the third season, I guess Netflix as a rare thing made the decision to cancel a series that if they had finished it as it deserved would have caused a bigger and better impact. I say all this because the last season for me was a bit disappointing, a lot of nonsense and it looked like a very rushed plot, they wanted to close a very good story in the most compact way possible and that almost always if not 100% of the cases will go wrong and unfortunately this series was no exception to that rule.
A notable drop, a total absence in the horror factor, something that had characterized the previous seasons, were one of the factors of the downturn of this third season. Inconsistencies in many scenes, obvious things that should have been taken for granted and here by trying to inject a false and not very credible drama they ended up ruining a good plot; and not to mention the villain, one with all the possible clichés and the truth is that I never empathized with him or believed his interpretation that could have been of much higher quality, like the one we saw with Laysla De Oliveira playing the role of Dodge, the main demon of the first seasons. I'm probably being a little harsh with the end of the series but if you offer me an incredible first season, an acceptable second one, the least I'm going to expect is a closure up to par?
But not everything is bad, in general terms the series is quite good regardless of how it was concluded. The way they handled the fiction, the supernatural and fantasy themes, are aspects that really manage to hook a lot because they are striking and attractive. All the visual and special effects that took place in many scenes show that they really took care of those elements because they are a very important part of the plot in general. Although it can be considered for the whole family, it has a violent touch and a slight gore, at least in the first seasons, which personally surprised me a lot. The story is curious and invites you to want to know more about this mystery that the keys hide, at least at the beginning of the series they played a lot with that, with the uncertainty and intrigue generated by having the keys in question.
Here we were also able to meet Emilia Jones, an actress who is slowly making her way into the world of cinema, in fact she is the protagonist of CODA, one of the films nominated for the past Oscars and whose performance convinced me quite a lot, she does her job very well. In Locke & Key I would say that she is the main protagonist along with her brother Bode, most of the stories revolve around her and I think that as time went by she adapted better and better acted her role. She also became more mature and with that came a better performance, one that is at least more reliable and truthful. In general they are characters with very classic stories that exist in many other series, it's a stereotype issue I think but it's still very enjoyable.
Netflix had the golden opportunity to turn Locke & Key into its new golden goose before the imminent end of Stranger Things but the abrupt cancellation of the series prevented all this from happening. I think there was an incredible potential with this story, the possibilities of continuing with the plot could be infinite because the story behind the keys gave for that and more, and is that one the viewer this type of stories by more "childish" that may seem, that it has nothing, really draws our attention or at least to me; It happened to me with the same Stranger Things and Sabrina, also from Netflix. The latter is another example of what I'm talking about here, that series ended up being spectacular but again bad decisions threw it all away.
In conclusion I give this series a 7.5/10 because the third season is a couple of steps below what we were used to see. But a weak season is a reason to lower the grade? - If it's the final season, the one that closes the cycle of a story, yes, it's more than enough reason to lower the rating a little. Do I recommend it? - Yes. It's a series, as I said, quite good and enjoyable but it could have been much more impressive and incredible than it ended up being. There are three seasons of eight episodes each. I leave you the trailer of the first season in case anyone around here has not yet taken a look at it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
