(ESP-ENG) Que tan importantes son los videos en la música? // How important are videos in music?
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
We used to ask ourselves this question back in the 80s/90s and until the early 2000s and the answer was very simple: they were an important basis for the success of an artist, but nowadays I don't know if that's still the case. Certainly we are talking about a time which was totally dominated by television (specifically MTV) being the most direct and effective way to show the world the visual work that would accompany the song in fashion.
Sure, but now we have the internet and it should be easier and more globalized, right? - that's where my doubt comes in. Everyone or almost everyone has a television in their homes, how many of those have an internet connection? - That's the issue. I bring this topic because recently I have seen that there are very few artists who really put love and effort to their videos being the simplicity the common denominator but that was not always so. I want to show you some of the singers who owe much of their stamp to their videos, so let's see a little.
- Foo Fighters.
As I said each artist has a differentiating and unique factor and Foo Fighters' is largely the comedy; example of this is Learn To Fly where the first person we see in the actor Jack Black, another proof of this is the video for "WALK". Some videos are full of eloquent scenes with stories full of some emotional charge that what they seek is that you connect more easily with the product, remember that for me the videos are an extension of the song itself. For many years other directors were in charge of their videos but for some time now it has been Dave Grohl himself who has taken the baton and "White Limo" corroborates this. In the end the important thing is that the energy is not lost and that is what the viewer likes to see.
- Lady Gaga.
If a singer in the world has managed to leave a mark not only through her songs but also through her videos, it has to be Lady Gaga. The level of staging and concept of almost all her works is incredible to the point that they are the ones that last in time because of how iconic they become and for that to happen you have to have the thought that "no matter what they say, I'm still going to do it". We are in a world where it is increasingly complicated to stand out because of the great facilities that exist at the digital level and that is where she manages to stand out despite that is why at this point we can already say that she has a certain legacy and it is partly thanks to her great videos. I would dare to say that today there is no artist who makes videos like hers.
- Michael Jackson.
Here there is no competition or anything to talk about because there is no one who compares to the King of Pop with his videos. He didn't make videos, he made short films that were capable of crossing all kinds of cultural boundaries and at the same time with an immense capacity to offer his fans something new at every opportunity. The level of euphoria that was generated every time a video of his was announced was inexplicable and I have always said it and I still say it, Michael Jackson DOES NOT HAVE BAD VIDEOS, even the simplest one is a collector's item in contemporary music. Thriller and Black Or White are the videos that best represent MJ, the first for all the work behind it and the second for the message he always wanted to give to humanity; and the fact is that videos are not just filler, for them to last they have to have an extra.
- Queen.
There are very few of Queen's videos that can be considered JEWELS because of how advanced they were with respect to the era they were in and "I Want to break free" is a good reflection of that and even today it is still a standard for many people. I think that's what this publication is about, to understand that videos can break through that "fourth wall" and always have a positive impact on the viewer. It is true that Queen's library is not so extensive but they managed to go so much further with just the one I shared with you that that has to be reason enough to understand the power of making a video with such a powerful message. Freddy Mercury was a person who was light years ahead culturally than many of his contemporary colleagues.
- Rammstein.
If we have to talk about quality in videos, beyond musical styles, Rammstein has to be in the discussion without any doubt. And if there is a group that is faithful to that style, it is also them and if we see all their videos they will always have the same theme that characterizes them so much. I bring them to this list because their videos are works of terror, we could perfectly make a movie of that genre and it would be tremendously successful. How important are videos in music? - Ask these Germans that many of those who know them are largely because of their great music videos. From this small list if we have to choose who has been able to transcend with a unique style I would say it is them, without any doubt.
- Mención Honorifica.
- Gorillaz.
Just because they're in the honorable mention doesn't mean they're any less important. Gorillaz and their videos are so distinctive and special that if you just watch them, without audio, you know who they are. And that's what this is all about, being able to be recognized for more than just the sound of your music.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos escuchamos en la próxima!
Well my people, that's all for today, I hope you liked it. I know there are several artists that were left out but in my opinion I think these are and were the ones that made the most noise and the best videos.
¡A hug to all of you, we'll hear you in the next one!
