(ESP-ENG) Shining Girls, una serie que no se puede dejar de ver // Shining Girls, a series you can't miss!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
This is a series that I only started watching because of Elisabeth Moss, for me one of the best actresses there is today in this world of movies and series. I know that with her starring in a project there will be guarantees that either the series or the movie will be a success or at least that her performance will be something extraordinary. The reality is that in this case those two theories are fulfilled, the series has an incredible and really surprising plot (no one expects it) and Moss' performance, as she has become accustomed to, is ten out of ten.
It is also calling my attention that AppleTV people are doing things that are worth watching, such is the case of Severance and now with Shining Girls that for this server are being the best series of the year so far and with great difference. If with the first one your head exploded a little I assure you that with this one you are going to see stars every time a chapter ends. Impressive is the level of intrigue that is handled in this story, it is one that no matter how much you want to deduce things your mind will not allow it and this happens throughout the premise of the series. But well, let's talk a little more in depth about this marvel that I finished watching yesterday.
This story begins with Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss) who is a reporter/journalist living in the city of Chicago but is also a survivor of an assassination attempt. Logically when this happens nothing is ever the same for her and she is left wandering in a very distorted reality where in many times she can lose her sense of belonging, her own orientation both physically and mentally, she lives from very scattered memories, etc. This makes her life very complicated to live because no matter how much she wants to move forward, things will always happen that make her go backwards and start practically from scratch.
Everything changes when she learns that there was another murder and that many of the details of this crime are very similar to what she experienced. This is when she begins to investigate with the help of a journalist who is quite good at what he does but with great personal demons who decides to believe her and help her, we are talking about Dan Velázquez (Wagner Moura). From here begins a journey where Kirby will seek to understand what is really happening in her life, why her reality is so changing and absurd and of course, seek to catch the culprit of everything in order to understand and cope with her past that comes and goes.
I don't want to give too many clues about the central premise of this series because I want you to be surprised as I was, every time I finished an episode I understood less and less what was going on. It is a plot that honestly blows your mind and leaves you uneasy because I feel that it seeks to play a lot with the viewer so that one is also putting together the puzzle that is to see each chapter, in each one clues are always coming out so that you go putting everything together and you get, if you can, understand what is the explanation of what is happening. Personally, when I got to the last chapter there were many things that were still not clear to me, that's how complex and enthralling this story is.
What genre is it? - That's a good question. I would say that it is a very well elaborated police thriller, with touches of suspense, science fiction and even investigative journalism. It has the police aspect in the sense that being a serial killer on the loose, all the steps that are taken recreate as if it were really the police dealing with the case when it is not and that is where the journalistic part comes in with Kirby and Dan doing an extremely meticulous and exhaustive investigation that in the end you will see if it was successful or not. The search for clues, loose ends, witnesses, etc. is one of the most enjoyable things here.
And well the suspense is in every second the truth. It creates a very heavy atmosphere where being such a changing reality you don't know what to expect, you don't know where the murderer can come out and the same confusion that Kirby lives in certain moments you live it in the same way and that is very overwhelming to the point that you feel the anguish in your own flesh that she is feeling; it's like a fear but accompanied by a doubt the size of an ocean. For me a series will be good depending on how it makes the viewer feel and the range of things you can get to perceive watching Shining Girls is a bit wide.
The science fiction I think I'll leave it to you to discover. The magic of this story lies in that aspect and I don't think it's pertinent to give you clues here because as I said I want you to be surprised, nothing better than when things happen and you don't expect them at all. And we can say that the famous "cliffhanger" are the order of the day, each chapter is a new world that at the end leaves you worse so you automatically go to look for the next one and so on until you finish the series without realizing it.
Elisabeth Moss is a top actress, very top, she along with Julia Garner for me are the ones who can best get to play a role today. The level with which she gets into the characters is so real that you realize how she makes the stories her own to the point of believing you totally and live with her everything she is going through and suffering. Moss is a pure drama actress, it's what she does best and seeing her in this series is another proof of that. If you want to know more about her I suggest you watch The Handmaid's Tale, the series that catapulted her and continues to do so. The journey of emotions that are lived with her is very great, her ability to feel fear, fear and cry is something that few are seen as well as her. Total guarantee this series just for her.
Wagner Moura, the Brazilian known from Narcos and Tropa de Elite back in 2007, is presented with a much more serious and darker character. An incredibly tormented journalist who lives an internal hell thanks to an addiction. A key piece in this whole story because he is the complement of Elisabeth and the chemistry between the two is very good and evident. I didn't like him in Narcos, it's something very personal, I know he did well but he never fit me completely but here he seemed to me a decent character, I repeat, a good complement to Kirby's character.
And yes, we have to talk about Jamie Bell. What he creates with his character is a mixture of hate, pity and helplessness. I think that together with Moss he gets all the spotlight, I don't want to talk too much about him because the idea is that you discover him for yourselves but yes, he is a very good character where the shortcomings and a twisted mentality call a lot of attention. The reality is that the whole cast is very good, there is nothing negative I can say about him.
An excellent and very rare series, I don't know if I've seen anything like it, I don't think so, but the truth is that it's worth watching. It is a plot that will hook you from the beginning, I know I always say the same thing but it is the reality, when you see the first chapter you will remember these words. A drama quite loaded with anguish and intrigue in tow that makes it very easy to immerse yourself in Kirby's story.
9/10 because Apple TV did it again with another luxury series. I think it will be one of the best series of the year and I also think that many more people should be watching it, I do not understand how it has not become more viral with how good it is. You can find it, obviously on Apple Tv, it has eight chapters with a duration of 45-50 minutes approximately. I leave you with the trailer as always.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Now you got me so eager to see this series.
Actors give life to films and how well and efficiently they deliver the role of their characters is what sells the suite to the audience.
I have never seen it heard of theses actors you have mentioned here, but I am now interested in them from the way you have expressed your looking for them.
You should, it's a first class series!
I sure will.
I don't give to much for apple tv series, maybe it is time to go ! thanks for the review!
