(ESP-ENG) The Gray Man, mucha acción y clichés en una película // The Gray Man, lots of action and clichés in one movie!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Yesterday I finally decided to see this movie that is being talked about and commented basically for two reasons, the first one for the great cast it has, we must recognize that the actors we see here are big names and if we add to that that the directors, the Russo brothers, were the ones who were in charge of two films of The Avengers then more in their favor and the second is because it is said to be the most expensive film that Netflix has ever made. If these reasons are on the table, one should not hesitate for a minute to watch this movie and even more to expect it to be a great product, but is it really?
What there is no doubt with this film is that action is their flag, they took it to another level, in fact I haven't seen a movie with so many doses of frenetic action from beginning to end, so if you are a person who likes this kind of plots, this is your movie. But as there is action there are also many, many clichés, which are not necessarily bad, but at least for me they make me a little uncomfortable. Clichés that we are used to seeing in other stories, in fact there is a very obvious one that I will tell you more about later, that certainly make the characters more appealing to the viewer but that eventually become boring or very predictable. So without wasting any more time let's talk a little about this new Netflix "hit"....
This story has many important characters that the movie could revolve around but for now let's focus on Curt Gentry or Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) who at one time was a man who was in jail for a reason I won't tell you. To him comes Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) who has a mission, to recruit him to do the dirty work of the CIA, those that can not come to light as they are off the record. As it was obvious he became an outstanding agent, he was or is the best, his reputation and fame preceded him so that almost everyone who was aware of this world knew him or at least had heard of him but the picture changed very suddenly.
In a mission that goes wrong or not, it depends on the eyes with which you see the plot, agent Sierra Six becomes the target and is chased by practically everyone but literally EVERYONE and at the head of that operation is Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former agent and partner of Six. It should be mentioned that there is a third wheel and it is Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) who will be of vital importance and help our agent Six. It is from here when the real plot begins to develop full of action, chases, explosions, shootings, fights, kidnappings, conspiracies, etc.. All the topics that you can imagine you will find in this film, I think not a single one is missing.
The Gray Man is a film that is made to be pure entertainment and I say this because of the large amount of action that there is, I know I'm sounding repetitive but it is the truth, there are no moments in this story that give for boredom, it is impossible to sleep a movie that is something like that of a 007 agent but on steroids and that if you have to admit it, this whole section is ten. There is not one scene that has fallen short, that is bad or has been poorly done, all really catch you to the point that if you blink you miss a part. It's a constant adrenaline rush where all the illegal forces of the planet come together to hunt down one man, a man who is more trained than all those chasing them combined, what could go wrong? - Well, nothing; you don't have to be a connoisseur to understand what ends up happening.
The plot, if you ask me, has absolutely nothing special and is not very deep, I did not feel that there were big twists in it or anything that left me surprised, it is a very flat story in which this aspect took a back seat because as I said the strong point is the action. And this is not what you would expect from a movie of this style, that it only entertains and that's it? - The truth is yes, but a little more "lore" or background would not be bad from time to time and even more if it had a cast of the caliber of this film. In another order of ideas and as I said, things happen incredibly predictable as far as the characters are concerned, so much so that to see and know a little more of them at least with a couple I already knew how it was going to be their outcome which is given, again, by the clichés.
The things that I would say are the cinematography, the camerawork, the photography, that is, the way in which almost the entire movie was filmed. You can really notice the hand of the Russo brothers who are no rookies in this sense, there are scenes that you really get stuck watching them because of the level and the work behind them. In that if you can say that Netflix invested the money well, which was not little, it did it to give people a very showy movie in order that we stay only with that because apparently that's all that matters.
The characters. The first one I want to talk about is Lloyd Hansen. You guys remember the last Mission Impossible 6 movie? where the villain was Henry Cavill? - Well, it looks like both characters came out of the same mold, mustache and all. I found it impossible not to compare them and wonder why the stereotype of the bad guy has to be like that, the style, the trite charisma, the humor that doesn't make you laugh, even the way of speaking and thinking is the same. While it is true that this type of character is new for Chris Evans and he did a brutal performance, honestly you come to hate the character, it is one that as a concept I did not like, I've seen dozens like him. But well, I guess there are no more ideas and that's how villains have to be. 20 points for Evans, much less for the scriptwriters.
Ryan Gosling did everything right, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised that he had the skills you have to have for this type of role. It is known that he is a good actor as well as Evans but seeing him in such a demanding film I think it was new to me, unless I'm missing some other film of his. Nothing to say on the acting level because there is nothing to say, he is the typical cold agent or is made cold by things from his past that is a real killing machine. There is an engine that will move him throughout the film that makes the film has its sentimental touches. And finally Ana de Armas. How good she is, I had already seen her in something similar in the last James Bond film last year, but the truth is that these characters are very good for her. A solvency to do things very top plus as an actress is another that is impeccable, a whole ten. Will we see her as a protagonist someday with a similar character? - Hopefully friends, hopefully.
In short, a film to enjoy if you are a lover of good action, nothing more. You will get hooked because it is frenetic, it never stops from the beginning to the end and that is something that is appreciated, in this sense it more than fulfills. But this does not take away the absurd amount of things we see that make these stories tiresome, how predictable and how scratched many of the things we see here are. I was quite entertained but I already knew what was going to happen, it's like being one step ahead of the plot and those changes in it were missing as well as depth and context.
At first I was going to give it 7.5 but the action is so good that it bought me a little bit so I give it an 8/10. Not even close to being the best movie of the year but hey, it delivers what you see in the trailer. It's a little over two hours long and is available on Netflix. I leave you with the trailer so you can see the action I'm talking about.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!

What do you get when you combine 007 and John Wick? You get the Gray man. You could tell they really put alot of money and effort into this movie, excellent casting. We got to see Chris Evans as a bad guy for once and he played the role so well.
This movie had suspense and action, just the way I like it. One of the top movie of this year for sure. This is an awesome review by the way
Chris Evans is to be applauded, the truth is that even though I didn't like his character, he played it perfectly. It's good to see him in things never seen before.
I don't know, I expected a little more.
Thanks for the visit, greetings my friend!
This movie got a lot of hype that it was difficult not to watch it when it came out. I agree with you that the movie is purely action and not deep. Even the whole thing about Six and his brother were purposely made to be shallow. It's mainly to entertain the audience and I have to be honest, I was entertained. The movie was kind of like John Wick to me where one man is so unkillable that the viewer has so much confidence in him and just wants to see him fight. I love the action and all the stunts especially.
I don't think Lloyd was a former partner of Six. I remember that he was asking who he was, etc.
Yes, I've had several people tell me about John Wick but for some reason I didn't associate it at the time.
With such a good cast it was very difficult to pass over this movie as you say. It's not bad, but it's not great either.
Tengo varias cosas que decir sobre esta película. pero quizás haga una publicación mas adelante. es entretenida, pero nada que me lograra impactar. Ya confirmaron secuela y spin off.
