(ESP-ENG) The Patient, una historia de miedos y traumas // The Patient, a story of fears and traumas!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Searching and managing to find quality content I feel that it is becoming increasingly complicated given the immense amount of supply that exists as far as series are concerned, many times it is by chance, sometimes it is because you read something about it and the third is by a simple intuition. In this case I must confess that it was 10% of the second with 90% of that intuition that one feels when you see a little of what the story is about and its protagonists. Steve Carell is one of those actors that may be difficult to see him outside of his mythical character from The Office, Michael Scott, but the reality is that behind the comedian there is an immense actor capable of playing any role and he proved it to me in this new series.
The Patient is one of those series where it is very likely that we discover things about ourselves that perhaps we did not know were there because it is a story that explores a lot with traumas, pain, hate, fears and those family/love relationships that simply do not work deriving in all of the above. It is a journey in which we see how it is possible to deal with all that through therapy but also through self-examinations of conscience, there are ten intense chapters where you are constantly thinking what is the worst that can happen and how to get out of the situation that little by little I will tell you. So without further ado, let's talk a little about this series that without making much noise is extremely good.
This story begins with Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) who is an acclaimed psychotherapist, one of the best, who has recently been dealing with various family problems and losses, this and given his profession has not managed to overcome it all because he keeps trying to lead his life as normal as possible. For one of his consultations a man arrives, Gene or Sam (Domhnall Gleeson) who talks to Alan about the problems he has and his inability to control the impulses that dominate him. What impulses are those? - To kill people and this new patient is a serial killer who wants more than anything in the world to stop committing these crimes and asks our therapist for something unusual, to help him repress these somewhat homicidal impulses.
But everything gets a little complicated when Sam decides to put Alan in captivity because inside his head he thought it was a good idea to have his therapist at his full disposal. It is here where this plot starts where the only objective of Dr. Strauss is to survive this situation by trying to treat Sam's mind and achieve that through sessions in the middle of a basement he can control his insatiable desire to kill. In this way Alan will also be able to discover the root of his own family problems involving his son and his late wife. I can tell you that for me it is one of the best series I have seen this year, there are many competing for that title but everything you get to feel and experience with this story is overwhelming.
One of the things I'm most a fan of is psychological thrillers and this is a good example of one well done with a plot that grabs you as quickly as you begin to understand the nature of the events surrounding Sam. As I said it's a series that plays a lot with emotions and the very surreal tension of the situation of being held hostage by a serial killer who at any moment can kill you is one that transcends the screen and you get to feel it. The only consolation that Alan has is that Sam does not kill for the sake of killing, for him there has to be a reason which is motivated by traumas and experiences he had in his childhood and that is where Strauss' expertise has to come to the fore to seek to suppress those thoughts while in parallel he seeks to devise a plan to escape from confinement.
It is a series where you will not find great action scenes or much less a millionaire production, it is a very simple but extremely deep work, there are ten chapters where all are practically a therapy session in which all those factors that can trigger who we are and how things that are probably taken for granted can influence our way of relating and how we act with those around us are touched. This plot also has two paths, one is led by Sam and everything that surrounds him, the coldness with which he handles his rabbit and how he acts before that and a second one is that of Alan who shows us his pain at his family situation and how he channels it through dreams and hallucinations.
In addition to all the psychological background we also see an approach to a religious theme that is one of the catalysts of the traumas of our therapist and it is with respect to Judaism. It is quite curious because it gives us another context to understand certain things in Alan's attitude, they are situations and speaking from the deepest ignorance that I would think that they can become very common among practitioners and believers of this religion. I don't know, I found it very interesting that touch to the plot. In the end it is a story where you experience many things, it is a kind of roller coaster of nerves, indignation, sadness, of this there is enough and I would say that even amazement to see how the human mind works in different situations, within the terrible of it all is very fascinating to see.
The characters are extraordinary. We see Steve here in a very serious and sensitive role with a very big emotional charge, with many repressed feelings that little by little he understands and in a very introspective way he makes the passes with himself. He is an extraordinary actor, I really liked what I saw of him in this series. And on the other hand, Domhnall was a real surprise for me, playing a murderer with a totally dissociated mind and disconnected from reality but sometimes sounds more sane than the therapist himself is something very complicated to achieve. You can get to feel his anger, his pain and the frustration of wanting to do things differently and just not being able to. The typical weird character but hiding a terrible secret, good role without a doubt.
A very interesting series and at least I was really hooked by it. It touches on issues that are sensitive and complicated to express but at the same time are very common in us. A lot of pain, anger and repressed feelings, traumas that mark the lives of people and above all fears of change and taking that first step to face all that these characters suffer. I give it an 8/10 because the performances, the development and most of all the outcome convinced me and left me more than satisfied. It has ten episodes of 25/30 minutes each and you can find it on Hulu and soon on Disney Plus. I leave the trailer below.
