¿Cuándo fue la última vez que Max Verstappen no ganó una carrera? - para eso hay que remontarse a septiembre del año pasado en el gran premio de Singapur, premio en el que casualmente también ganó Carlos Sainz. Este fin de semana se vivieron muchas cosas en el premio de Australia, premio que por lo forma en la que se había dado la pole position parecía indicar que sería como estábamos acostumbrados a ver, con una victoria segura del neerlandés. Pero no fue así y en cambio vimos como la Ferrari se impuso muy cómodamente con un Carlos Sainz muy veloz; y pensar que este piloto está prácticamente recién operado.

Y ya en la línea más de abajo tenemos a los Alpine que no quieren salir del hoy y un hecho curioso: Daniel Ricciardo está siendo superado ampliamente por su compañero Tsunoda, de hecho el australiano ya tendría un ultimatum para mejorar en los próximos dos premios.

Llegamos al día de la carrera, una que como les comenté tenía toda la pinta e intención de ser más de lo mismo pero los problemas mecánicos decidieron que no sería el caso. Apenas en la vuelta 4 el carro de Verstappen comenzó a echar humo al punto de que una vez en los pits se decidiría que no saldría más por lo que si: Verstappen is Out. Esta noticia lógicamente abrió un abanico de posibilidades ya que el ganador podía ser cualquiera, la monotonía se acababa. El detalle es que la carrera que estaba haciendo Carlos Sainz era antológica, para la vuelta 13 tenía una ventaja de casi 20 segundos con respecto al tercer lugar que en este caso era el Checo Perez.

A pesar de que el piloto líder de la Red Bull no estaba en pista la carrera estaba en dominio absoluto de Sainz, la velocidad que estaba desplegando era increíble. Pero las sorpresas no terminaban allí y es que en la vuelta 18 Lewis Hamilton también se vería forzado a retirarse por problemas con su motor. Este sería otro capítulo más en el triste comienzo del británico en esta temporada y es que como ya lo dije lo de Hamilton está siendo muy lamentable al punto que si vemos la tabla de posiciones de los pilotos, Stroll, si, el peor piloto de los 20, está un punto por encima de él. Honestamente en esa parte alta de la tabla no hubo muchos cambios más allá de los que se dieron cuando hubo cambios de neumáticos y un breve VSC por aquello de Hamilton.

En términos generales tuvimos una carrera tranquila en donde hubo dos equipos los cuales dominaron de principio a fin: Ferrari y McLaren. Y digo tranquila a pesar de que Australia históricamente siempre ha sido un premio en donde ocurren muchas cosas que acarrean SC, abandonos, accidentes, etc. Este año no fue le excepción y es que finalizando la carrera Russell tendría un aparatoso accidente el cual destrozó completamente el carro cuando buscaba adelantar a Alonso en la penúltima vuelta del circuito por el sexto lugar. La cosa es que según los comisarios, Fernando Alonso fenó antes de tiempo lo que hizo que Russell perdiera el control y se estrellara contra las defensa pasando por la grava. Ante esto el asturiano fue penalizado con 20 segundos lo que hizo bajar a la octava posición.

The thing is that according to the stewards, Fernando Alonso stopped early which caused Russell to lose control and crashed against the defense passing through the gravel. As a result, the Spaniard was penalized 20 seconds, which caused him to drop to eighth position.
En lo personal me pareció desmedida la sanción pero bueno, al final es otro día más dentro de este deporte y sus comisarios. Con estos resultados la cosa se aprieta bastante en la parte alta de la tabla con un Verstappen líder pero con tan solo 4 puntos de ventaja. Leclerc con 47, Pérez con 46 y Sainz que escala a los 40 puntos. En un mundo ideal estas peleas se verían durante toda la temporada pero estamos claros que Max no se va a retirar en todas las carreras o incluso eso de perder también es complicado que suceda. A los fanáticos de este deporte que nos gusta la competitividad y el espectáculo la retirada de Verstappen fue algo inesperado pero que sinceramente no vimos con malos ojos, al fin veríamos algo diferente.
Personally I thought the penalty was unreasonable but well, in the end it's just another day in this sport and its stewards. Por lo pronto la próxima carrera la tendremos en dos semanas y será en el mítico Suzuka de Japón. Red Bull y Ferrari se colocan en lo más alto de la tabla de constructores con 97 y 93 puntos respectivamente. ¿Qué pasaría si Verstappen no estuviera en la F1? - esa es la pregunta que muchos se hacen, ¿todo sería más equitativo? - recuerden cuando Hamilton tuvo su hegemonía en Mercedes. Más allá de responder esa pregunta lo que los equipos tendría que hacer es tratar, dentro de sus posibilidades, hacer que sus carros sean lo más competitivos posibles, McLaren lo está logrando, Ferrari igual, Aston Martin lo intenta. Pero igual la brecha es muy grande.

En efecto pero ya el mal está hecho. Se quedan con Leclerc porque es más rápido y por un tema de juventud. Lo bueno es que no veo a Sainz fuera de la F1, estoy seguro que alguno lo fichará.
