El debate ya ha comenzado, a poco menos de 3 meses de la ceremonia ya esta conversación se está dando para poder decidir quien sería el próximo Balón de Oro. Si me lo preguntan la verdad es que no lo tengo nada claro, creo que por primera vez en varios años no hay unanimidad para este tema. Cuando el año en cuestión es mundialista pues es obvio que dicho torneo pasa a ser un elemento definitorio, sino pregúntenle a Messi cuando lo ganó en el 2023, pero en este 2026 la cosa parece estar más reñida y es que los candidatos son claros pero las estadísticas en algunos casos ayudan pero otros no tanto.

If you ask me, I honestly don't have a clear opinion. I think for the first time in several years there's no consensus on this. When the year in question is a World Cup year, it's obvious that the tournament becomes a defining factor—just ask Messi when he won it in 2023. But in 2026, things seem much closer. The candidates are clear, but the statistics sometimes help and sometimes don't.
Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane y Kylian Mbappé son los tres grandes nombres que encabezan esta lista de candidatos. Comencemos por el más joven de los tres. La temporada de Lamine Yamal con el Barcelona fue bastante buena ganando Liga y Supercopa pero con la selección ganó el Mundial. 25 goles con 20 asistencias no es una cifra para nada mala para un jugador que no es un goleador nato. La eterna discusión con este premio es que parámetros se usan para la elección o cual pesa más, si lo colectivo o lo individual. Lamine no ganó más títulos que Kane ni Mbappé pero los que ganó son de mucho peso al mismo tiempo que tampoco hizo más goles. Pero entonces pasa lo mismo que en el 2023, si se lo dieron a Messi por haber ganado el mundial, ¿podría pasar lo mismo con Yamal? - creo que la diferencia es que Lamine fue mucho más determinante en el Barcelona que Messi en el PSG.

The eternal debate surrounding this award is what criteria are used for the selection, or which carries more weight: the collective or the individual. Lamine didn't win more titles than Kane or Mbappé, but the ones he did win are very prestigious, even though he didn't score more goals. But then the same thing happens as in 2023: if they gave it to Messi for winning the World Cup, could the same happen with Yamal? I think the difference is that Lamine was much more decisive for Barcelona than Messi was for PSG.
El segundo nombre es Harry Kane, estamos hablando de un tipo que hizo 73 goles en la temporada y ganando 3 títulos también, todos en Alemania. Se quedó en el camino con el Bayern en Champions y con Inglaterra en el mundial aunque se fue con 6 goles hechos. En la definición de lo que es ser un 9 goleador tiene que estar la foto del inglés, lo que hizo esta temporada es una locura. Tuvo que salir del Tottenham para poder figurar como se merece en Europa al punto de ser considerado para ganar el Balón de Oro, algo impensable hace unos años atrás. Y el tercero y último del que hablaremos hoy es probablemente el que menos chance tenga de éxito pero igual es uno a considerar a pesar de lo "floja" que fue su temporada a nivel colectivo porque individualmente fue impresionante.

And the third and final player we'll talk about today is probably the one with the least chance of success, but he's still one to consider despite his "weak" season at the team level, because individually he was impressive.
Kylian Mbappé no ganó absolutamente nada esta temporada, con el Real Madrid fue nefasta la 25/26. Pero entonces por que lo consideran? - pues porque fue la bota de Oro del mundial, de la Champions League y de La Liga con el Madrid, hizo casi 60 goles. Con 27 años ya es el máximo goleador de los mundiales con 22 de los cuales anotó 10 en este último. No se si estas estadísticas son suficientes para entregar un premio, creería que no, pero sin dudas es un jugador que dejó una marca muy grande en este 2026. Ya podríamos lanzar más nombres a la lista, Dembelé, Rodri o el propio Messi gracias al gran mundial que hizo. Pero la realidad es que los tres primeros, para este servidor, son los principales candidatos.
Kylian Mbappé won absolutely nothing this season; his 25/26 season with Real Madrid was disastrous. So why is he being considered? Well, because he won the Golden Boot at the World Cup, the Champions League, and La Liga with Real Madrid, scoring almost 60 goals. At 27, he's already the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, 10 of which he scored in this last one. I don't know if these statistics are enough to award him a prize; I don't think so, but he's undoubtedly a player who left a huge mark in 2026. We could add more names to the list: Dembélé, Rodri, or even Messi, thanks to his great World Cup performance. But the reality is that, in my opinion, the first three are the main candidates.
¿Mi opinión? - creo que se lo va a llevar Lamine Yamal. El mundial tiene un peso gigantesco a la hora de decidir este premio. Creo que de no haber sido año mundialista el candidato más seguro hubiese sido Harry Kane pero lamentablemente para él España se llevó el máximo titulo del mundo del futbol. Lamine desde el año pasado ya estaba sonando mucho para llevárselo, ahora con un mundial a cuestas no veo obstáculos en su camino para que no se lo pueda ganar. My opinion? I think Lamine Yamal will win it. The World Cup carries enormous weight when deciding this award. I believe that if it hadn't been a World Cup year, the most likely candidate would have been Harry Kane, but unfortunately for him, Spain won the biggest title in world football. Lamine has been a strong contender since last year, and now, with a World Cup under his belt, I don't see any obstacles preventing him from winning it.
