All eyes in the football world are on the World Cup; it's believed that nothing else matters, as we're currently in the midst of the most important event on the planet. But things are moving in parallel, because in less than a month all this will be over and it's back to reality. What is that reality? – preparing for the next season, preseason training, and so on. And if there's one club that's working flat out, it's Real Madrid. After the elections, which, to no one's surprise, were won by Florentino Pérez, a player reshuffle began, involving players who will leave and others who will arrive, or rather, have already arrived.

It's well known that last season was a monumental disaster for Real Madrid, from Xabi Alonso's departure to Arbeloa's continued presence at the club. Since their defense and playmaking were nonexistent, some moves had to be made to reinforce those positions, starting with the manager, José Mourinho. It must be said that all these signings have the direct approval of "the Special One," because if there's anyone who understands what it takes to revolutionize a squad, it's him. There are four confirmed arrivals, three of which are in defense. Ibrahima Konaté is the first, a central defender who played for Liverpool. His current form may not be the best; in fact, he's not a starter for France in this World Cup, but his quality is undeniable. With Mourinho, he might rediscover his form. In my opinion, he's coming in to be a starter; the question is, who will he replace? Rüdiger, Militão, or Huijsen—two of them will be benched.

Marc Cucurella is perhaps the biggest bombshell of these moves. Nobody expected anything when the complete signing of the Spanish left-back was suddenly announced. This position suffered greatly because it was under the care of Álvaro Carreras, who didn't work out at all; in fact, if you ask me, I'd say he was one of Real Madrid's most disastrous signings in recent years. Cucurella arrives to be the undisputed starter, so we'll have to see what happens with the other Spaniard. One of the best moves by Los Blancos, the former Chelsea player is perhaps the best defensive left-back in the world; against Cape Verde, he was one of the best on the pitch. The third name is at the other full-back position, the right, Denzel Dumfries. Trent Alexander-Arnold arrived as a star signing, but he's another player whose season didn't go his way, to the point that he wasn't even called up for the World Cup with England.

The Dutchman arrives from Inter to bring order to that flank. Dumfries is also defensive but can occasionally venture forward. He's been a starter for his national team at the World Cup, and he actually played quite well in that match against Japan. If these players perform as expected, we'll have one of the best defensive backlines in Europe. But that will all be for naught if they start getting injured or their form drops. And finally, we come to a position that has long needed filling, the one once vacated by the great Toni Kroos. Bernardo Silva arrives to bring order, and creativity, to Real Madrid's midfield.

The Portuguese player is 31 years old; many consider him "old," but his quality, clarity, and vision are immense. He won everything with Manchester City and was a key player in Pep Guardiola's system. I think his arrival will be fantastic. If he combines with Fede Valverde and alternates with Arda Güler, Real Madrid might finally have the creativity they so desperately need. This has been the biggest problem for Los Blancos: the lack of someone to distribute the ball and control the midfield. Add to that a man like Mourinho at the helm, and the results could be very promising. On paper, everything looks good; we'll have to wait and see how it translates into practice on the pitch.
