(ESP-ENG) The Baby, una maternidad envuelta en terror y comedia // The Baby, a maternity wrapped in horror and comedy!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Today we come to a series that for some time I had been told to take a look at so this week I decided to get into it. The reality is that at that time when I read a little of what it was about I think I prioritized other content to be leaving a little relegated to this series, I thought it was not going to call me much attention but that goes, big mistake, quite the opposite, it is a series a little disturbing and uncomfortable to watch in some passages and that without knowing much the reason you get a couple of laughs. The combination of horror and comedy is one of the things I enjoy watching the most.
HBO Max was in charge of introducing us to this series, a series with a somewhat particular story that involves, logically, a baby and a woman who does not want or has no intention of becoming a mother at the moment. Through a number of things that are happening, somewhat strange and disturbing, fate, life, karma or whatever you want to call it seems to have other plans with her. The truth and against all odds I liked it, I do not think it is among my favorites but that does not mean it is a bad series, it is one that is a little average I would say. But well, let's go and talk a bit about this crazy and surreal plot...
The story focuses on Natasha (Michelle de Swarte) a woman who lives her life as she wants, doing what she likes and without any worries or ties. But as it happens in this series and in the same real life her friends begin to have children and this is when her priorities change and everything ceases to be as they were before; this and without her knowing it begins to bother Natasha and little by little we see her as she begins to generate an anger inside. But as I said, sometimes life takes many turns and our protagonist's life suffers a big change and it is all thanks to the sudden and unexpected arrival of a baby, the baby that is and will be the center of the whole story.
So far it seems that everything is going well but the reality is that no, there are things that begin to happen and that set off the alarms that something strange is happening but do not know exactly what it is. The thing is that this is not just any baby, it is an incredibly manipulative one that will gradually turn Natasha's life into a totally surreal hell bathed in a very peculiar terror. It is then from here when our protagonist realizes what really happens and begins to look for a way to get away from this baby as quickly as possible and whatever it takes, the plot will tell us if she succeeds or not.
As I said when I talked about The Black Phone I consider myself a big fan of the horror genre, I like it for all the sensations that it is able to transmit to the viewers and in this series even though it is not a masterpiece it makes you feel uncomfortable watching it, there are certain scenes where not knowing very well what is happening that uncertainty sometimes invades us and ends up being a very positive ingredient to enjoy the plot as it should. But it is not all about terror, we are also facing a satire, a rather black comedy that shows us what it is to be a mother and everything that comes with having a child from the eyes and perspective of a person who has no interest in babies and that is precisely where the irony of it all lies.
Delving a little deeper into horror on several occasions I realized that there are certain references, and keeping a lot of differences, with some of the most important classics of the genre in recent times and I refer to Hereditary and Midsommar. With the first in terms of that different and out of the ordinary horror that made so much effect in that film and with the second because it also touches on several events that occur in that film that makes it impossible not to notice, in fact if you saw Midsommar I'm sure you will notice it. There is a very awkward and weird vibe to those moments in the series that really are a major plus because you are able to feel it. But, there are scenes of shocks? - A couple; not the common denominator but they are there. What we do see is blood, that gore element was also brought here and while it is true it is not exaggerated it works perfectly.
It is a novel plot because in particular I had not seen anything like it in a series, maybe I'm missing something, but recently I can assure you that I have not. If it is a story that catches you a little because from the beginning we are shown the idea that there is something supernatural, something that can not be explained behind everything that happens, things that we do not understand and that opens us the curiosity to discover them and the plot grabs that for the viewer to be hooked. So yes, The Baby is a series that I didn't expect at all to be the way it ended up being so I feel I didn't waste my time, at the end of the day you enjoy it, you laugh, you are puzzled, you might get scared but above all you get very disturbed, the atmosphere is very weird.
Mentioning a little about the characters we would have to talk about a couple. First of all we have Natasha, a woman that although we think she has a solved life everything seems to indicate that she doesn't. She is very lonely, bitter with everyone and with family problems. Very lonely, bitter with everyone and with family problems we see her dealing with things that she does not expect and that come to her suddenly and that journey of her throughout the eight episodes is what makes the series enters a comic spiral that within the sinister that is everything, gives a bit of freshness. A strong but stubborn and proud woman with a very strong personality, that's Natasha.
And secondly we have Amira Ghazalla who plays a woman who is looking for answers. Answers to questions that she has been asking herself for years and that involve our protagonists and this series has a background in the past that makes it even more attractive. At first glance it would seem that Eaves would not have much weight in the story but yes, she will be Natasha's right hand to solve everything that is happening in her life with this new baby. She is a character that is driven by unconditional love for a person and it is incredible what that feeling can do, she will do everything possible to find what she is chasing. It is a very particular pair that will undoubtedly get a laugh or two out of you.
Anyway, this is a series that in general terms is quite acceptable, it can be seen and enjoyed without problems, I repeat it will not be the best series of the year but it is one that fulfills its promise. A lot of suspense, a lot of intrigue, it has a very marked and peculiar terror that goes hand in hand with a dark comedy that complements each other very well. It's interesting how for a moment you can be laughing and the next moment really disturbed by what you have just seen or discovered.
This series gets an 8/10. I think it could have been a little more than it was. The way it ended makes us think that the story is closed, in fact there are no intentions of a second season. In the series they explain that everything that happens is an endless cycle so for many it may have been an open ending but I don't see it that way. It consists of eight chapters of half an hour average duration and as I said it is on HBO Max. I leave you the trailer so you can take a look at it.
