SunThursday - Reflections on how much I love the sun

avatar

We all have a fairly complex relationship with the sun. Without it, life on earth would not exist. So our very lives are dependent on that great blazing orb in the sky.

And yet it can kill you. If you are too exposed to the sun, you can get the kinds of burns you would experience in a fire. Spending too much time in the sun without protection can damage your skin and potentially give you skin cancer. All this from one big ball of fire that is millions of miles away.

But there is nothing more pleasant than sitting on a sunny beach, or enjoying a sunny afternoon in a garden, or sitting on a sunny patio sipping something refreshing under an umbrella. The sun makes all this possible.

One of my favorite things about the sun is how it is reflected in water. As an amateur photographer, I love to capture the various effects of sunlight on waves, on ripples, on still water and in water droplets. The possibilities are truly endless.

I live near thousands of bodies of water - in Minnesota, "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." For nearly half the year the lakes are frozen. The rest of the time, I'm completely mesmerized by them, and the many different ways I can capture sun reflecting off the water in my photographs.

Here is one of my recent favorites. I love this picture because the sun coming through the clouds looks completely chaotic, as if the sun is having an emotional meltdown. But then in the water it looks soft, complacent and gentle, as if the water reflecting back to the sun is saying, "Hey, it's okay. Time to set. Have a good rest. You'll feel better in the morning."

What a great picture. You would think there is a possibility of being on an LSD trip looking at that sun.😋

I have been sunburned a few times, once really bad on the top of my thighs. Now my skin is discolored with hundreds of spots.

The sun can be lovely, but it can be a real bummer as well.

Oh that's terrible! But it does happen to everyone at some point. This is the sun's message: you will respect me! Ha ha.

Good to see you!

We all have a fairly complex relationship with the sun.

So so true. The two things we depend on for life on this planet are also killing us gradually - the Sun and Oxygen. Crazy how that works.

It really is wild. We cannot live without them, and yet they can be deadly. Nature is bizarre. Good to see you, @adetorrent! Reminds me I haven't visited your blog in a few weeks. On my way!

Dear @jayna, I too had some time without visiting your blog, and now I find here your beautiful picture and this reflection on our relationship with the sun. I understand your fascination as a photographer. I live in a place where the sun bites the earth hard and my relationship with it is passionate and somewhat biting too. Your photographs allow you to imagine the great spectacle of light on the water in your locality. Wonderful!

Thank you so much for coming by for a visit, @adncabrera! Yes, I've been focused on photography and @actifit for my posts. And I also write weekly writing tips posts as @theinkwell. It keeps me busy, alongside my job. Most of my creative writing is being sent off to publishers for hopeful acceptance. :-)
