“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

I may be a music lover, but I am not a huge fan of "traditional" musicals in terms of movies... I am however a HUGE lover of musical movies which have both history and substance and tonight I watched one of those! Personally, as light-hearted and somewhat comical as the details were, I believe it held a much more serious and stronger underlying message.

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a mom who exposed me to all the timeless greats and these artists have become my passions when it comes to music. I have in turn, unintentionally imparted the same onto my son Jude and I am eternally grateful that as a 10yr old boy in 2019, that he can sing along to The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, ABBA, Depeche Mode and countless others - the same however, cannot be said for a pretty good portion of the younger generation as well as plenty people my own age. When and HOW did people so completely lose the plot when it comes to music?! Yes, there are many fantastic artists these days, but there is a lot more... (how do I put this politely) SHIT than there is good stuff! lol!

There have been quite a few musically driven movies coming out of late - all of which are highlighting some of the worlds greatest artists... and I think this is amazing, because as much as many of us know WELL who these greats are, the younger generation don't - and it is about bloody time they were educated! lol! I am making myself sound a LOT older than I am with all this protesting haha, but reality is - music was better back "then".

Back to the movie I mentioned - it is called "YESTERDAY" and in short... a completely unrecognised musician was hit by a bus (yes literally lol) - when he awoke, it soon became apparent that not a soul on planet earth (not even Google) had EVER heard of The Beatles, so having been an avid fan, he decided to start singing their songs... and so the story goes on (no complete spoilers here lol).

What I loved about this, was how it brings so many absolutely brilliant classics into the sphere of the youngsters today. So MANY No.1 hits by one of the worlds greatest bands - which they have NEVER heard, and probably never would have had it not been for seeing this movie. Jude, having been named after one of their most iconic songs is always in awe when he sees the original being performed or even other greats doing it justice! And yes, I named my son after a song, because songs had SUBSTANCE back then!

I felt the same thing about the recently released movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie Mercury is, was and always will be the "Queen" of rock, much like Elvis Presley will forever be the King of Rock 'n Roll and Michael Jackson the King of pop! (In my opinion anyway... lol). These are ALL legends which the younger generation absolutely SHOULD be exposed to and I am thrilled to see so many of them being brought to the forefront of the movie scene lately.

I am so very thankful that I was introduced to so many masters who were WAY before my time, because now I can not only appreciate present but past musical masterpieces too. Jude sings in the shower EVERY SINGLE DAY and I can tell you this much... he is NOT singing ANY of the rubbish that other kids are listening to - thank HEAVENS! lol!

We may not be able to change the course of the future, but we most certainly can play our part in keeping such brilliant flames alive.

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” ― Billy Joel

❤❤❤

Until next time...

there's more shit today because virtually anyone with a laptop can make music. I agree on all you said about the legends, but I must say that today there are way more great artists than before, they are just too underground, almost unknown. But there's also way more crap as well.

I hear what you are saying, but would not deem that an accurate statement - I do not think there are more great artists today (in fact I would say opposite) - the only difference is that technology has now exposed all those that would never have been discovered back then - as to the calibre of those now being discovered versus back then... I am going to place my bet on: if the internet were around back then, they would put 99.9% of today's "undiscovered" talent to shame.

Well, I run 5 record labels, and one of them for 10 years. I can assure you that the amount of great music nowadays is far greater than in the past. My job is to discover new artists. A&R friends working in major record labels like Warner Music, BMI, Parlophone, PIAS, etc also share the same opinion.

The thing is that what you hear on the radio or what is reviewed on mainstream magazines and blogs are the crap that is pushed by the major labels which nowadays play it safe in order to have maximum reach amongst the young public.

Before the year 2000 having access to professional recording equipment was a luxury not everyone could afford. Nowadays, like I said on my first statement, just as the bad musicians have access to write, record and produce music, so do the virtuosos that no one knows. So I'd argue this is the main reason nowadays there are more talented musicians, despite the fact that simply by statistics there should be more, because there's more population than before. People have studied the great musicians of former times and technology has evolved in a way that has allowed musician's reach levels that previously weren't imaginable.

However, in order to discover, one must dig. Great music is very rarely commercial.

Sorry, but I don't see this as an objective perspective. Your job is to seek out talent... but you have a world of resources at your fingertips in order to do this - (compliments of technology). None of that accessibility was available back then - so how can you even confirm a statement like that because nobody ever got to hear MANY of the hidden gems from yester-year. There was no youtube or live streaming so they just never got heard. I am not arguing with you, but merely pointing out that the only reason you/we discover so much more talent nowadays is because of technology. Place that in the hands of the "wannabe's" back then and I think it would render your statement invalid... BUT, and it's a big but (isn't it always lol) - from both sides of this fence, it is merely our opinions :)

your rather extensive comment edit came in after I had already responded to the original and yes if you want to cut it down to population levels then - agreed... but I don't think that was quite the conversation we were having (not to my mind anyway).

People have studied the great musicians of former times and technology has evolved in a way that has allowed musician's reach levels that previously weren't imaginable.

Yes, they have studied them... lol - to master the art of plagiarism! so no, sorry - do not agree with that statement either. If there was so MUCH talent out there now, then why is most of what is produced today, ripped off from some random "old song" that nobody thinks anyone will remember lol - because that is an absolute truth - be it the beat, backing, lyrics or sadly and most commonly - just a complete re-hashing of what was once something great.

This lack of originality filters into many facets today - beauty, fashion, decor. Every single one of those industries are constantly stealing and re-inventing what has already been done.

"We" think we are an amazing generation - I beg to differ on several counts. We, are a lazy generation and "cribbing with a face lift" seems to be the general "go to" - bubblegum, the other.

Not to say I don't appreciate the great talent that is in fact out there today - because there is a lot, I am simply of the perspective that when you dig into a lot of it, you will find that is is often not complete originality.

But, having said all of that - who am I to say that prior generations did not do precisely the same to their "predecessors" haha!

Either way, it really is no matter and I should not take sides because I listen to it ALL! :)

Good chat - I am off to la la land! :)

I'm with you here! My mother did the same thing with me as I grew up (except the masters were a wee bit earlier than the ones you listed, lol) Nothing like the old musicals..I still love them today. My daughters listened to most of the musicians you are sharing with sweet Jude. Telling a story is the secret and you're right, much of the music today does not. Love this...looks like there is a new movie I need to watch for:)

Hey @jaynie

I loved Yesterday. I thought it was a brilliant concept and had some lovely moments in it. Like when he meets (no spoilers) someone very special! 😁

A few cheesey moments but nothing to spoil an otherwise cool and feel good movie.

Yes it was a very clever concept! Something lighthearted and fun for a change in this world of so much doom and gloom lol.
