Why you should put the sun 🌞 behind your subject! Featuring Alexa

Authored by @J Burke

As a beginner the sun is your friend, as you advance in light knowledge it becomes your enemy...
When your subject faces the sun there is no key light produced in your image.
The reason we like to put the subject facing the sun as a beginner is because it removes shadows.
Shadows are okay, highlights are not.
Here we place the sun up and to the left of the subject to give a natural key light halo effect around the subject.

When this photo was captured there was a ton of shadow on her front side which is okay. The shadows are raised in post and the highlights are lowered to maintain the sky.
