The family party
My Auntie's fiance was back for the Christmas celebration. He was out of the country, he was based at Uk. My Auntie's face was beaming with happiness. I have previously spoken to my Auntie's fiance over the phone when she was optioning for a tooth replacement. It was my field and I provided for her the options relevant for her which the husband called to confirm from me. That was my first time speaking to him. He was back and I could see the spark on my Aunt's eyes. My Auntie has been staying with us in our family house for a few months now due to her work place being closer to my family house.
"I'm going to miss you" I couldn't resist the tears about to drop when she was done packing up her stuff. Truly my Auntie was helpful to me, she has turned into my bestfriend. I have tormented her with my turns of problems and she always has a solution backed up with advice. She added a sparkle to our life as my younger siblings chose to follow her to her fiance's house. The house feels boring without her, I was back to my usual working with my phone at one corner of the house,my presence was barely noticed as I was comfortable in my own space without any disturbance.
It was on a sunny day, the harmattan season has added a sparkle to the Christmas celebration. I got a call, the number wasn't familiar but I managed to pick it up.
"Hello, good afternoon" I greeted the person on the other end, I was contemplating who it was at the other end and what the person wanted from me.
"Good afternoon, do you know who you're speaking with? The other end was cracking but I managed to respond negatively to the question. The call went dead. After a few minutes the call came in more clearly than before then I recognized the voice. It was my Auntie, I giggled in excitement like a child but I didn't mind. I was so happy she said it's been a week since she left and my Christmas was going to be boring, though that was what I thought then. She asked me to come over to help her out in a family party that her fiance was going to host in the next few days.
The next day I set out for my journey, I arrived at her place and I was welcomed. I dropped my bag and we started the preparation. First of all, the dishes we are going to prepare. It was going to be hectic but I was happy doing it all. The party was in the next few days. We kickstarted the preparation, both cleaning of the house, decorations and lots more. We planned on going to the market the next day before an aged woman walked in. She was in her late 40s and she was known as mama Grace. She was the wife of my Auntie fiance's brother.
"How is the preparation going?" she asked my Auntie.
"Fine,I planned on going to the market tomorrow and we would be making pepper soup, joff rice, fried rice and some soups," my Auntie responded.
The woman arched an eyebrow. I knew something was up with her. My first time meeting her something within didn't just accept her. I was skeptical about her and my inner thought warned me to stay away from her.
"We don't do segregation here,we cook together and serve together" she corrected, the party was for everyone. She had the option for my Auntie to cook with her in her own house but my Auntie disagreed with that idea. She said she was going to cook in her fiance's house but if they needed any dishes to serve their guests she was open to dish to everyone.
Change of plans, we planned on cooking several delicacies but Mama Grace changed the plans. It was all filled with arguments, the next day we planned on going to the market but we couldn't go as the argument continued. Finally it was settled and we were running out of time, the party was just the next day and still we haven't gone to the market yet. My Auntie was pissed off, that wasn't the vibe she wanted at the moment. But notwithstanding, we managed to prepare some dishes. Mama Grace was in and out of the house, monitoring like a monitoring spirit everything that goes. I managed to calm my Auntie and she put up a smiling face. The party came to an end but we managed to prepare some dishes, there was a huge turn over. It was all about serving and preparing more dishes.

Hahaha!😂 I'm very familiar with the kind of person mama Grace is. The type that would want her ideas to be followed by all means.
It's good she didn't finally kill the moment
Yes, but it wasn't with a full vibe as planned.
You present us with some interesting characters in this piece, @jeclyn60. You also give us insight into your own personality. We can feel the tension in the house as Mama Grace begins to interfere in the preparations. You describe this domineering character well. Despite Auntie's strong and positive character, it is difficult for her to salvage the holiday by keeping Mama Grace's interference at a minimum.
You are good at providing descriptions. Your writing is spirited. We do have one suggestion that might help you to write more structurally organized pieces. When you are finished with a piece, take a look at the first paragraph and the last paragraph. Ideally, you will end up with the same subject for those paragraphs.
For example, you begin the piece by writing about the fiance returning to the country. However, you end it by explaining how the Christmas party turned out. In order to give this piece a better structure, you should either begin with the party (and end with the party) or, you should begin with the fiance and end with the fiance.
Once you introduce a theme, such as the fiance returning to town, you should follow that thread and it should lead somewhere. You can put in all the other details (which are really interesting) but the thread begun in the first paragraph has to be concluded in the last. That's just classic essay/story structure.
This was enjoyable to read. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you for the correction, I will put that into consideration.
Sorry about her interference, but the important thing is that you still had fun and your Auntie was still with you enjoying the party together. She may have good intentions, although I do not understand the reason for the argument.
The reason for the argument was for the food to be prepared at Mama Grace house which my Auntie refused.
