Creative-Sunday - I Give Myself Away (cover)

This world never stops telling people to follow their minds, do what their hearts want, and be their own person. Magazines, social media, and all those self-help books keep saying it's only when a person does their own thing that they will find happiness and fulfillment in life.

But this song "I Give Myself Away" has a completely different message. The lyrics call on the person to surrender everything, including themselves, to God - to leave behind their own dreams and goals, and give their life over to God.

At first, it might sound like this is a way to destroy a person's life and purpose. How? To just give yourself over to God like that? But it's actually the opposite!

When a person surrenders everything to God, that's how they will fulfill their real destiny and become who God truly wants them to be. The lyrics state it clearly, "My life is not my own / Yours I belong / I give myself, I give myself to You." Nothing is hidden, it's a full surrender.

On the spiritual side, when a person gives their life to God like that, that's how they free themselves from the illusion of an independent self that exists in this world. Buddhism has a concept they call "no-self" and in Christianity too, Jesus said unless a person denies themselves, they won't bear fruit in life.

It's true that it's hard to just let go of what we tightly hold onto like that. The ego doesn't let a person easily give up their autonomy. But as the song says, "Take my heart, take my life as a living sacrifice." It's like every time, we get the chance to offer ourselves to God.

And when we do that, that's how our small, personal stories will enter into God's big plan that is far bigger than us. It's that grace that will enable us to do things we could never dream of by ourselves. Because "my life is not my own / Yours I belong."

It's in that paradox that lies true life and overflowing joy! To consciously let go so that God can use us for what He wants, that is the way to truly awaken to our purpose in this life.

So friends, you all should try it! Give your lives to God today and see how you will live and fulfill a destiny bigger than any dream you had before. I give myself away...so You can use me!
