[Esp-Eng] El olvido de lo bello || The oblivion of beauty

The subject of beauty is one of the topics I am most passionate about since in philosophy there is a section where they talk about those characteristics that everything that exists has just because it exists ("The transcendentals of being"). These characteristics are Unity, truth, goodness, and beauty. It is a subject that I liked so much in my years of study that I remember that I did at least one work on it, but then the subject also became one of the transversal axes to develop my two theses, first the one on philosophy and then the one on theology.

Regarding the initiative proposed this week by the humanitas community, I am going to focus on the relationship between aesthetics ("The science that studies beauty") and reality in general, because there is already the first point of reflection here, and that is that beauty is not something that is reserved for the visual arts but is also present in everything that surrounds us: In people, in a speech, in the way we communicate, in nature, in the things we make, in a post here on Hive, etc.

An example I could bring up to explain myself is that of salespeople. There is one that can only show you their items and tell you their prices without giving you any further explanation, on the other hand, another one can not only show you the item and tell you the prices but give you more personalized and close attention, so much so that even if you don't need what they offer it makes you want to buy because of the "beautiful" way in which you were treated. That happened to me a few years ago, well, there was a store here in my city that had excellent products but lousy customer service, in another one the products were similar. Although in quantity they were not like the previous one, I personally went there because of the excellent attention provided.

The issue of beauty and aesthetic judgments is closer to us than we think. In my anthropology classes to the boys of the seminar I like, for example, to emphasize when we touch on the subject of human relationships the importance of considering the emotions of people, when we reflect on this we move to the area of aesthetics since beyond thinking only about the relationships we are establishing is to take into account how we are building it, even in a simple greeting I love to follow in a way the guideline that advises an author I once read: "Touch the heart before shaking hands".

It is precisely here where for me the most important thing about beauty because if I venture to give a definition I could say that it is the impact that anything makes in terms of satisfaction or enjoyment leaves in us. Therefore, we talk about the beauty of a painting, a piece of music, a building, the sunset, the stars, science, etc. Hence, for example, we sometimes have different aesthetic judgments because the impact was not received in the same way. For example, when we say "The lion is not as brave as he is painted" to refer to a person that we have already known better and we have learned to appreciate or value the good and beautiful things he has.

I also remember that when I studied the history of art there was something evident and that is that the canons of beauty varied not only from time to time but from place to place. This is normal, what should be learned from the various cultures about what is the philosophy underlying their multiple creations, for example, the Gothic basilicas pointing to the sky to convey the superiority of spiritual values or the contrast of a painting to highlight some particular aspects.

I think that in general, we suffer from a forgetfulness of the beautiful precisely because it is something that we relegate to certain particular things and we do not broaden our perspective when the reality is that in the end we end up attracted to something is for its beauty, that is why, when one turns to an environment it is not only for what one learns nor what is done but also how it makes one feel. To ignore this does not make us understand, for example, why things that are obviously wrong end up attracting more, a case of infidelity - to illustrate a little - may be due to the fact that love is already cold, there are no details or good treatment or anything beautiful to rescue, then the couple seeks in another person what is missing in their relationship.

I like to apply beauty, especially in the way I communicate, because it is not only important what we say but how we do it. You can even insult someone with good and beautiful words, hahaha. I have experienced how the same information is received differently depending on how I present it, reprimanding someone, for example, but making them feel (and mind you, not only understand) that it is for their own good.

We are facing a challenge, therefore, of rescuing the beautiful, which in the end ends up being a rescue of the human, because we are not simply intellectual beings or of action but of relationship, we are not objects that can be treated in any way but subjects with reason and will but also with feelings and emotions that cannot be put aside or relegated to oblivion.
