Patience, a space of gestation (Spanish/English)

A loving greeting to all my Hive friends, mainly to the wonderful people of this community that I enjoy so much. When I read this initiative I immediately started writing, as this topic is very interesting to me. I have always considered myself a very patient person, since I was a child I dedicated myself to build the conditions so that everything I wanted would be given to me in due time, and it was hard for me to understand the attitude of my older brothers who drowned in a glass of water when they did not get what they wanted instantly. I guess that predisposition to active waiting led me to the lifestyle I chose from the age of 22 when I started practicing active and passive meditation, conscious breathing, migrated to vegetarianism and embarked on a beautiful journey, to develop my emotional intelligence, which after so many years still continues.

I believe that patience is our natural state, we see it in the tree that actively waits for the moment to bear fruit; while waiting, it leafs out and blossoms. Each previous moment makes possible the one that follows it, but the tree does not go mad, it does not become frustrated by the pace at which its processes march, it does not become bored with its own mystique. Likewise, from the moment we are born we begin to experience the stages of our physical and cognitive development. Without haste we go through our childhood among games, laughter, fantasies and minuscule adventures that at that age seem solemn and glorious to us.

4.jpg

Our problem is that we have long been disconnected from our nature. We live falsified processes, we feel predetermined emotions, and we are permanently accelerated by a system that is based on production and consumption. It is not easy to develop patience in children when on a daily basis we interrupt their sleep because they have to get up to eat, when they are eating we hurry them because they are going to be late for school, at school they go from one class to another respecting the academic times and not their own times of understanding, they arrive home to rest but they have to do homework the next day, also there we hurry them so they can eat and go to bed early because the next day they have to go to school. This is how they learn not to value what they are doing in the present, since they must do it fast and as they can because there is always something else to do later.

I am an optimist, I believe we can embrace patience and other great virtues that add to our personal and collective well-being. In my personal experience two things allowed me to cultivate patience and continue to help me keep it strong as an oak tree, because like everything that is sown and grows, it must be nurtured, watered and cared for every day to keep it standing. These two life practices are 1. meditation 2. social work.

Meditation, as I have said in other occasions, I have been practicing it for more than 25 years. It is very simple to start practicing meditation, you can sit quietly and concentrate on the rhythm of your breathing, you can also light a candle and try to look at it for as long as possible without getting distracted. These are small initiation exercises, because what it is about is to direct your attention to a fixed point, preventing your mind from wandering. As my spiritual master says, the mind is a crazy monkey jumping from branch to branch. For me meditation is a way of life, I don't meditate when I sit quietly in the lotus position and listen to my breath. I meditate every moment, my focus of attention is fixed on what I propose to do, if I am washing the dishes, for example, my mind is there watching my wet hands in the sink, trying to do the best I can. I don't torment myself thinking about what I will do next or what I could have done if I didn't have to do the dishes, I respect my processes, my times. If I wait for someone and that person is late in arriving, I do not torment myself thinking about things like "why is he making me wait so long", "He is irresponsible", "Next time...", "I would have better not invited him", what I do is to check that the space in the house is ok, I bring forward some of the snack, or I simply bring forward some of my work, when the person arrives I receive him calmly because I waited patiently for him. Some people tell me that I am distracted because, for example, if I am driving and they talk to me I do not always listen, but it is not for lack of attention, on the contrary, my attention is directed to drive well, to arrive safely to my destination and to take safely the people who travel with me, that is my responsibility at that moment.

This is how I meditate in my daily activities, because as I said before, meditation is a lifestyle, not a hobby. They seem simple examples that I chose, but they seem to me indicated because that is how it should be, from the simplest to the most complex in our lives requires our attention and patience.

2.jpg

Social work, I believe that cultivating patience is a personal and also an interpersonal process, it happens between people in the day-to-day dynamics. If I lived in a hole, oblivious to outside life and other living beings, I would not need to feel or expect anything. But we are social beings, we need collective development for personal development and vice versa. I am grateful that all my paid and volunteer jobs have had to do with social dynamics. In all of them I have met multitudes of people, I have traveled to different places in the state of Táchira, in Venezuela, as well as to other countries. I have learned to understand people, their temperament, their character, their rhythms, their value systems, I have had to deal with rude people, with bad manners and few values, I have had to face unprincipled and corrupt people in defense of what is right. And I think there is no more effective exercise to develop patience than living together, because I know that other people also have to deal with my things, so I try to be patient with them and with me. You learn from others and you grow with others, you can never go it alone.

With this I say goodbye, I hope reading my post is nourishing, and I look forward to reading your comments so I can also nourish from you. A huge hug, I have really enjoyed writing on this topic. Until next time.

Feliz noche.😊
