Transformation of a dangerous neighborhood.

My name is Jhonny and welcome to my blog, today I will show you the neighborhood that in the past was the most dangerous neighborhood in Colombia and today it is an architectural, tourist, cultural and meeting place of the city of Medellin called commune 13.

To go to commune 13, I first took a bus that takes me from my house to the metro system, this bus cost me 2300 pesos to get to the metro system and enter that also costs you 2300 of the ticket, you go to the San Antonio station when you get to the San Antonio station, without paying more tickets, go up to the second floor to catch the train that will take you to the San Javier station.

When you arrive at the San Javier station, you go out and take another bus that takes you to the escalators and the graffiti tour costs 1350 pesos.

The energy that is felt in this place is currently wonderful, it feels super cool, it feels a good renewed vibe, not at all, at no time is that cloudy past that this community had, and that they bet on change for their well.

What is very original here in commune 13 and that is why this place is so recognized, it is because of the section of the escalator, there are several sections of stairs, and it is very rare that in such a popular neighborhood you find this guy of stairs.

Commune 13 San Javier is one of the 16 communes of the city of Medellín, it is located to the west of the central-western area of the city, the neighborhood is hidden in the middle mountains, a place where a few years ago was the area most dangerous city in Medellín and since Medellín was also once known as the most dangerous city in the world that is to say that commune 3 was difficult, it is an understatement.

In 2002 this sector experienced a high intensity armed conflict generated by various political and social situations that were derived from the internal Colombian conflict.

Colombia is a country of resilience and the best place to attribute it is commune 13, where tourists have the opportunity to see how the renewed art and architecture is entangled with the history of a neighborhood far from the rich areas of Medellín, where the most tourists stay during their trips.

I recommend that you try the michelada in commune 13, it is one of the best I've had here in Medellín with a spectacular view of the entire city.

Commune 13 is a place that made a total turn of 180 degrees, currently it has nothing to do with its past, this place is full of a very good vibe, of hard-working, fighting people, there are many stalls of crafts, food, dancers and musicians who every day get up to show their faces for their neighborhood, for their community to show it in the best way, people come here and leave delighted.

The commune 13 of Medellín grew significantly in infrastructure and service, along with the social and youth programs that transformed the area through art, where several artists capture beautiful graffiti on the walls that speak of the history of their society, its customs and natural beauty, in this way all visitors to this area are fortunate to enjoy an outdoor urban art gallery that reflects the metamorphosis of a resilient society that does not stay in the past but looks to the future with Big hopes.

If you want to join this great contest, where you can show the works of your city, I leave you the link.

revamping the image of dangerous neighborhood is always a nice idea. It doesn't have to be a dangerous neighborhood but often a slum place too. It's one of the ways the local govt help its people to have more activities and also empower the locals. In my country, there are many places like that which is now is transformed into a tourist spot.

Wow! I think the vibrant wall arts added some beauty and colors in the said area. It is a great feeling to see how it changes to something good where the residents or any tourist will be benefitted when they pass by or visit the place. Salute to the team on their time and dedication to make it successful. Nice to read your post @jhonnygo.

I imagine that there were many years of effort and dedication to transform the neighborhood and even more people, because if people do not change the environment does not change, thanks you are very kind.

Yes, It's like in the saying of" If a man is a problem then man is the solution." If nature can make its own, why not people too?. Enjoy! and thanks for taking your time to respond to my comment.

Hello @jhonnygo. As what's clearly demonstrated in your featured built environment of Commune 13 of Medellín, architecture and design certainly have the power to transform a neighborhood. Not only do they improve the location's visual appeal, but also have a direct influence on the social culture of its residents and visitors. And because the social infrastructure has been enhanced, everything follows suit. People there become happier, more productive, and enjoy fulfilling lives in their rejuvenated community. During your walk in that locality, what architectural renovations have attracted your attention the most and why?

Thank you for your entry to the OCD Community Boost Contest for Architecture+Design. Beautiful post!

That's right, as you say, there will be certain exections, but the rule is to follow inertia, in this case that of order, harmony and collective well-being.

What impressed me the most are the escalators, it's a shock, don't you expect it, in a neighborhood; and it worked for the good of all, the one who lives there and the visitor.

Thank you, I hope I have served !!

Oh cool! I'm pretty sure the escalators improved the smooth flow of the crowds and the easy mobility of urban activities there. Cheers! 😊
