In Tints And Shades
I’ve never had an aversion to white. Like a lot of people, I see the interior decorations of magnificent homes and how they look pristine and just about perfect with their neutrality. I felt it was cute. It did appeal to me at the time. It still does to wn extent. But sometimes it could twinge my senses the wrong way and I didn't know yhat until I attended the housewarming of a relative.
The house was huge and magnificent. I did expect the house to be abundantly painted in neutral colours cause his wife had often gushed about how exotic and elegant those model houses in magazines looked. And so I knew that she’d style her house in that manner. But I hadn’t been there three minutes before I decided up front that alas! It wasn’t for me. Cause it wasn't neutral. All white. Like a hospital.
The house was pretty. It was elegant. It was the model home. But that’s the issue. It was too perfect. I’d fawned over those model houses for a long time but somehow this lacked the homey effect it was supposed to have. Maybe because it was modelled after a magazine ad. Or because it was all white. I didn’t judge her for it though.
I think, however, that asides from an all-white home, neutral tones are really homey. There’s a lot of importance and meaning attached to the place you call your home. It’s a place where you should feel happy, feel safe. It’s a kind of haven to me. Because I know that if I was sad and on the verge of despair, I’d look at my wall and how pretty it is and at least, momentarily, feel calm. Which is why I didn’t judge my relative’s wife for her choice of decor and rather respected it cause at the end of the day, you’re hoping for a space you can feel safe in. One that makes you happy and it looked like the all-white tone seemed to genuinely do that for her.
My family home was painted in cream and sand tones for a long time then a few years back, my Dad decided that he’d like a change. He asked the girls what colours we’d like, showing us the colour palette and I was immediately drawn to the coffee brown and dusty pink colours for the exterior. Andthat’s what we eventually went with. I would have liked something like that also for the interior but the cream tones still looked just fine to the rest of my sisters.
The house, for the exterior, has this elegant look to it that didn’t take away that comfortable look from it. I immediately fell in love with all things neutral. However, for my own apartment which I hope to have someday, the darker neutrals like Grey and Brown stand out for me. I’ve always wanted that in my own home. I know a place with proper lighting is suitable but I’ve always felt more at peace in darker coloured environments.
I’ve also seen people be able to perfectly pull off colourful walls and decorations. I think our choice of walls isn't exactly a pointer to our personality and sometimes, if the colours are combined correctly, they look pretty nice and are quite appealing to the eye. And I, myself would love and have sprinkles of colourful art here and there in my home, just to add that elegance to it. In the end, we just want to be in a place aesthetically pleasing not just to our eyes but to our hearts and senses.
I do feel quite happy that neutral tones exemplify minimalism but if a whole burst of colours makes you feel calm and is your safe space, it’s still exemplary of what minimalism characterizes. Happy and Safe.

We had the most of the interior of my family house layered with screening paint. It made the whole inside all white, including the white ceiling. It looked all too plain and boring, and so my brother and I immediately suggested to our parents to pick something other than white to finally paint the house. I just couldn't settle for hospital look. And so, we changed it. We changed it something worse...the living room, actually 😂
Fluffing lemon green and tea green were the combination we used for the living room. I have never beheld such horror for colors in my life! I don't know what came over us, but I gradually hated the color day by day. And it's satin paint that's expensive, so we had to DEELLL with it.
Picking one for my room, however, I went for something very simple. I couldn't have an accent wall, like I did back in school, and so I just went all grey—light grey. I prefer dark colours with touches of white around. That kind of combo. I did wish afterwards, however—when we painted somewhere else brown—that I could have used maybe tan or camel brown instead. That feels warm to me.
Lol. I can imagine the horrors. Anything green paint in the first place is something so delicate that you can never get to combine it right nine out of ten times. I'm glad you eventually deeelt with it. But in the event that you couldn't stand it, whatever happened to my house?😁
I like grey and white touches too. And brown and all of that you mentioned. Maybe I'll need a picture of that in case I wanted to paint my room or apartment same colour.
The only green that just works is when you got plants around. Never again will paint walls in that colour.
Me wasn't brave enough to face 'em fangs yet

Lol. I don't know. What if that's my favourite colour?
Leemao. Are you serious? What about now?
It's really about the color combination..
Exactly. All in that colour combination.✨
You're welcome. Have a wonderful day.🌺
I was having the same thought. Maybe people feel safer in bursting colors. Not me. But I get it. I still wonder how people get their tastes. Maybe the way I got mine? Whichever way, I get a bit curious when I see some interiors with so many more colors than I can count and yet they look to be in the perfect harmony. Hehe.
(My head dey hot 🤧)
Sorry about your head babes.
But yeah, people are wired differently I guess. And some still make it work for them.
But I couldn't ever live with such colours. I'll go crazy. Lol
Thank you.💚
Going for an all white apartment is totally not for me, I do prefer light colors but not white I'd prefer sky blue and nude.
Well, choosing a color is not easy because for me my environment will determine the color I'd go for.
Sky blue and nude look really beautiful.
And I think you're right because it needs a lot of work to be able to find out that perfect colour to suit your environment.
That's right dear. Any how, when we get there we will cross the bridge, hehe.
🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for the post my friend.. got me thinking of my personal fav, which is light 'earthy' tones.

You're welcome. Love your taste as well.✨
We all know what we want and I do agree that it is best to go with a color that when you look at them when you are sad, it help cheer you up. I love white and also nude for my home when I have one 😁.

I think so too. Thank you.
I couldn't help myself but laugh when I got to that "hospital look" why haven't I thought of that? Now I know the right words to tell my hubby, his love for white is so overwhelming, my house looks like it belongs to a priestess, we just got a new apartment, I allowed him do his white everywhere, still deciding for the colour of my room, I feel more homey in warm colours too I'll go with one of those neutral colours you pointed out, thanks for this post, forwarding the link to him ASAP! 😂
#dreemerforlife
Forward oooo. We must not allow an all white home.😂
White is such a beautiful colour but he should combine it with something darker like brown or grey or blue. Just to make it homey. We can't be giving off priestess vibes in this economy abeg. I'm so happy about your new apartment sweetie. Cheers to you.🤗
Different people have the different taste, I love the color white, it's gives a sense of peace but I don't like the fact that it can easily get dirty so of I can I will mix white with another color.
#dreemerforlife.
Yeah. The mixture of it with another colour now gives off that perfect blend. Looking forward to seeing that your apartment that you hope to design one day.🤗
Yeah. No problem you will see it 😊.
