Loyalty.....How Unsavoury

avatar

I’d thought of how to fix the prompt of the week in my writing. I knew I had stories to share when it came to the term ‘agreement’ but I didn’t know which one seemed good enough but then I had a call today from someone and immediately I knew the story I’d narrate.

Image designed on Canva

The thing about loyalty is that it stems from a deep place. Someone you truly love, a close friend, a relative. Somehow you owe it to them to be loyal. For this, I’ll talk about my friend Jane(not her actual name.)

Now, Jane is the daughter of one of my dad’s oldest friends and we were born around the same time so we automatically grew up as friends. She comes from a strict family like mine so she wasn’t really allowed out of the house. To see friends or anybody. Except mine. So anytime she wanted to see someone, her dad would only let her if she was coming to my place.

We were close so I didn’t have a problem with her coming over all the time. One day, she came over and said she agreed to go on a date with her boyfriend. I dissolved into laughter. “Jane, are you insane? You know your dad would never let you go to another person’s place. Let alone a guy. Let alone a boyfriend.”

“I know that.” She snapped “But I’m still going.”

Suddenly a feeling of dread washed over me. “So what will you tell him?”

She proceeded to beam at me. “That’s where you come in.”

“Me??? Ma’am, I’m not going anywhere with you. If that’s what you’re implying.” I seethed.

“I’m not asking you to go anywhere with me. I’m just saying that for that day, I’ll pretend that I’m coming to your house. But I’m not because I’ll be with him. So you’ll just have to cover up for me.”

I was beyond unhappy. The whole plan sounded so risky and at that time, I usually ran away from anything that even remotely posed a risk. So I told her that I was sorry but I wasn’t going to do it. Then she dropped the bomb.

“But you’re supposed to be my friend. How would you live with yourself as a person knowing that it’s because of you that I never had a chance at happiness? You know how much this means to me.”

Now, I knew that I’d just been served an unadulterated emotional blackmail. She knew that I knew it too but there was nothing I could do. She’d trapped me with the friend card. So after making her promise that it was going to be a one-time thing, I agreed to cover up for her.

The day came and I had my heart in my mouth. Hoping she was safe, hoping her dad didn’t catch us in the lie, a lot of things. And when my phone rang and the caller ID indicated that it was her dad, I could have died on the spot. I contemplated not picking it but my instincts told me I’ll be making a mistake. So, with my breath drawn, I answered the call and mumbled a feeble greeting.

“Yeah Tess, Jane’s line is switched off. So I wondered what the issue was.”

“Okay Sir, her phone was down and she’s helping mummy in the backyard.” The lie rolled out of my mouth.

“Okay thank you. Tell her to come home on time.” And after saying a few other things, the call ended.

My shoulders sagged in relief. I promised myself never to do such a thing again. It was far too risky and I hated lying to her dad. Luckily, Jane got home alright and that was the end of it. Or was it?

Ladies and gentlemen, a week later, she asked for the same favour, saying something about it being their anniversary and playing the same friend card. And in case you’re wondering, yeah, I did it again for her. With horror, I watched how it slowly became a routine. Lying that she was with me so that she could go places.

And for those asking why her dad never caught on, I’ll say that she’d been coming to my house for more than a decade, so her father would never have thought. But, of course, the every day for the thief and one day for the owner….. thing eventually came true.

Her dad called and asked where Jane was and I responded in the monotonous manner. “She’s helping in the kitchen.”

“Then why am I looking at her right now in front of a lounge?” The line disconnected.

I’d never prayed so hard for God to take my life at that moment. I was done for. Turns out, her dad had a work contract at that particular lounge and I could imagine the horror on his face seeing his daughter stepping out of it.

We got the tongue-lashing of our lives and I regretted agreeing to such a plan that could have even hurt her in the process. But that was years ago and as we recounted the experience to each other on the phone today, we had a good laugh over it.

It's a tricky position, lying for a friend. Because maybe what they're doing is innocent enough, and they're in the right...but what if they're not? I was never comfortable lying for friends, either, but I guess these moments are part of life too :) I enjoyed reading this!! Great write up!

Yeah, these moments lead up to what we call life experiences. True, we laugh over it now but it wasn't a funny matter at all then. It's always a pleasure to have you take out the time to read..have a wonderful day.🤗

There are somethings we must not even accept when it comes to friends. I'm sure her sad would not forgive you for what you have done

He did forgive me actually. He understood that I was doing it out of loyalty to my friend but he just said we things like that could put us in harm's way.

One day for the owner😂😂. But parents should let their children live life so that they won't have a reason to lie to them. They should just do the guiding.

That's the issue. Parents, African ones mostly, create that void in their children's lives so they don't feel safe enough to talk about things like that with them. But that notwithstanding, the deed is already done so it's left for us to make sure our children don't ever feel that way.

I have never done such kind of task and If I were in your place I might not help her because I believe that hiding something from my parents isn't good and we need to face the consequences for it later.
Whatever, It was a funny incident if you think about it at the current time.

Well trust me, we don't have to inform parents of everything. It was risky and I don't know if I'd done it for her in this present time but that doesn't mean I'd go blabbing to her parents either. It's good things turned out well.

Then why am I looking at her right now in front of a lounge?

Eh eh eh!😂😂😂 Big time mess up 😂. But why? Why would you be gallivanting around a lounge when you're supposed to be undercover. Tch.

I can only imagine the battering your parents gave you guys. Reminds me of Dj ice and pollyanna; good thing they played their cards right😅 .

The thing tire me o. On top mall they said they were going to. Lounge now entered. Why?

Reminds me of Dj ice and pollyanna;

I knew you'll talk about it. And Ice's dad talking about kids with doomed future.😂😂

Haha, that was a shocking surprise from her dad when he saw her at the lounge. We always got caught when we try to cover the truth. It was a great lesson to be smart so that the mistake doesn't happen again or to just not cover up in the first place :)

Yeah, better not to cover up in the first place and just say things as it is. But, restrictions like that are not exactly there again so everyone can just do their own thing.

Oh my! Jane's dad would not trust you again for that. One thing about something being started on the first day is that one keeps doing it over and over until they are used to it, but as they say, everyday for the thief, one day for the owner. Though it's something you guys laugh over it now. Lol

Well I tried convincing him that I'd changed for the better so I guess he believes me now.😁

Yeah, it serves as a funny story now. It's a pleasure having you.

I don't think I've ever been through something like this, but if I were to do it, I think they should plan every detail very well.

Well you can't keep planning details forever. Especially since it now became a habit of hers. We were bound to slip at some point.

You speak lies for your friend. If I were at your place, I literally shall not take risks for my close friend even. It was a good story indeed. I also laughed for the risk you had taken for your friend Jane for her date.

Your friend really put you on the spot, but it’s more common than you realize in close relationships. It’s a wonder how people mistake the meaning of loyalty, because a truly loyal friend would never ask another to lie for them. In retrospect, that’s what you probably should’ve said to her. However, it seems that all turned out well enough, since you’re friends to this day.

You're right. Especially in a situation that could have put her in serious danger.

Things did turn out well for us and yeah, we're still friends though not that close. It was a pleasure participating.✨

Mennn this was a great story. Per usual, I had a lot of fun reading this, I read so quickly cos I knew you guys were going to get caught in the lie😅.
Unfortunately, when our friends play the friend loyalty card, we're always obliged to go along with whatever. Thankfully though, she didn't get caught. Why are guys always the reason?😅

Something similar happened to me except I forgot to tell my friend to cover up for me. I told my dad I was going to my friend's place that evening and I went some where else. Only for my friend to decide that that day, out of all the days, she was going to come to my house.

When my dad called me and said Chidera was looking for me, my heart flew to my mouth😅😅.
Surprisingly he didn't do anything. He didn't even address it🙂. It was weird.

Thank for God Growth. They are all silly memories now🤗.

Just imagine you already anticipating our Downfall. Why?😂

But she did get caught na. And yeah, guys play a significant role in making many girls lose all sense of rationality.🙂

Saving the repercussions for a rainy day, I'd say. No dey lie about your whereabouts.😂

Geez! This is an extreme sport and I'm not a fan of it. Lol

If I may ask, how old were you girls at that time? 😆

Your friend became too confidence forgetting that those moments were stolen. They had no business hanging out in an open lounge.

Apart from her dad, someone else could've seen them and reported her to her dad.

I'm glad she didn't get hurt or physically harmed in the process.

That would've been worse.

Quite an interesting story.

Just to add, I hope the boy later married her or they're at least still dating?

Because if not, I'll wipe them both on the neck with a USB cord for putting you such a position for nothing.

We weren't that young. About 17 or thereabout.

My sentiments exactly. Someone could have seen her or she could have been hurt. Then, I wouldn't have ever forgiven myself.

Just to add, I hope the boy later married her or they're at least still dating?

And no, they're no longer in a relationship. I think they ended things that same year.😂

Please Oraimo cord to be precise because it was a lot.🤧

At 17, you weren't that young? 🙄🙄
Please remind me, what does it mean to be that young? Lol

It's good that she wasn't hurt in the process.

They're lucky that I don't know them. If I do, I would've been waiting by their door with my cord. Why would they stress you like that for nothing. 🤣🤣

Good morning. I love your vibes. Will you ask somebody to cover for you so I can take you out one of these days?
