List Lives Matter

list lives matter.png

If you have any experience in online marketing and you go many years back to when the open rate for an email was astronomical, to see that the open rate in 2022 is paltry, but the click rate is even less active can discourage most aspiring marketers looking to use email marketing for their business.

The thing is, that the power of list building is still relevant, but how it's being used in today's environment, eludes many who see subscribers with money signs in their eyes.

My first try at email marketing - years ago, before I fell flat on my face and quit to go back to work a 9 to 5 was a time that click and open rates were already declining.

Social media was coming hot and heavy towards the end of my first go round and that was sure to make things even more challenging for those of us that were looking to build a list of subscribers.

Like all things, email marketing takes patience. Takes testing. Takes tracking.

What folks like @jongolson realized early on in their own online business building is the importance of building a list, but not using the list to brow beat folks into buying something.

I'm going to guess, Jon was able to enjoy the wave of early explosive open rates as he was already doing his thing before I gave online marketing a try.

That takes patience.

What that means, is that your emails are best to grow your brand, create community and engage. That takes a shit load of patience.

HIVE DIVIDER.png

So, if you missed the boat on email marketing the first time or the second time or third time, then being up against the diminishing results from just sending sales pitched emails then pivoting to letting folks know what you up to, offering your help, inviting them to your latest blog post, podcast, live streams should actually be an easier concept to be open minded to.

Of course, the counter to that is; social media platforms can now do that.

It definitely can and why it shouldn't be instead of, but more in conjunction with.

That is why building a list should still be part of an Entrepreneur's business solution.

We can't fully escape emails, because there are very few entities that I deal with that does not use email to communicate.

Again, DM's, texting, face time and all those amazing tools that we have at our disposal today are treasure troves. Those are here to stay and will morph into other platforms we can't even dream of.

HIVE DIVIDER.png

Circling back to regular day to day life.

I am employed, so I have to use what our employer provides us for the day to day operations. There is not one minute, hour or day that email is not a part of that day to day.

From the personal side, I've elected to go paperless with many of the folks I have to pay bills to; so email will be one of the ways for those companies to communicate with customers. Again, with the full understanding that they also have apps, notifications, text features to reach out to customers as well.

Where the pivot should lead to is using the list you grow to leverage your presence on those other platforms.

Take CLICK.TRACK.PROFIT for example. I've been on their list for years and the team really never bombards their members with emails and most of the interaction will be on the HIVE side of things. If not Discord or Twitter.

And, I rarely ignore any emails they send. Back in the day, I looked forward to an email from them; because there were limited platforms to do so; other than picking up the phone.

Their emails still have impact, because they've nurtured it to be more of a seamless no-strings attached interaction.

HIVE DIVIDER.png

I myself am working through that balance of growing my list, which I find a little time to miraculously do and working through the challenge of having folks open and read the emails; but now be open to the world of HIVE.

The former is what online marketing has done for years, but to INFORM not sell folks on CTP and HIVE is where the real work comes in for me.

Based on percentages, I have to get way more subscribers to then get a better opportunity to have a core group of folks that buy into what I'm about and I don't mean monetarily.

I mean loyalty, recognition and trust.

It sure does take a ton of patience to grow a list the proper way. And truth be told mine isn't getting the attention it should from me. Time to turn that back around.

I hear ya Lisa.

Going all in on HIVE with the limited time has taken precedence, but we must work harder to squeeze in the list building.

I put the most effort on Thursday nights with the sporadic daily send and a few automated; but I have to carve out another time slot as well.

I've managed to stay consistent with my weekly post and send the email to LISTNERDS. I know I can and most certainly should be doing more.

Building a responsive list is one of the hardest things I have done in online business. I would usually send out no more than one email a week, and I would always try and add value to the message, as taught to me by @jongolson.

It is a slow and steady process that does require a lot of patience.

Good post, Jimmy.

Absolutely John, it's the unicorn that must be taken seriously.

An OG definitely knows the trials and tribulations of list building, but also knows the extreme value.

The study of open rates might have shown that the open rate of an email marketing campaign varies greatly depending on the industry and the communication medium.

But those of us who have tried our hands in this field understand that readers didn't open those emails of ours because we had been trying to sell them something. Even though we had been told to offer value first before we start selling, our readers could already see right through us.

But list nerd takes this away completely, we know we will be getting value not being told to buy something at the bottom of the letter.

@iskafan without question, but we are lucky that those most active on ListNerds understand the value of engagement except for a few that are set in their ways.

That’s why the approach or what I’m working on, off chain for me, is to build a list of folks that will see the possibilities on taking a look at ListNerds or for that matter HIVE by showing them my journey without trying to sell them the journey.

From the few brands that I choose to get an email from (mainly knitting, environmental and art related), I love getting an email from them and look forward to it. A really good newsy email with things of interest to me is a lovely way to spend half an hour with a coffee.

Wow you have a great open rate. That shows you are building a good relationship with your list. Keep it up!

Oh gosh no Bob. Those numbers you see there are based on several industries and overall marketing open and click rates overall.

But, it does show that email marketing is not dead.

Those are some great points. There is nothing worse than getting spammed by unwanted emails pushing things you don't want.

Yes, those days are gone. Today, emails has to be treated just like you approach social media for it to have some positive activity. Well, the right way of approaching social media lol.

Fantastic advice there Jimmy, and nice to see you talking from experience, an email list is very valuable if we treat it right, and provide value that people want to read, keep up the good work and stay awesome.

I subscribed to many "lists" while I started using a computer and my inbox was flooded with emails. TBH, I ignore most of them. Later, I unsubscribed most and filtered some as well. I hardly read any mail from the inbox.

Thanks for sharing your expertise on this topic.

What were you promoting mostly in your online marketing days? Or how/where you were getting the most rewards from?

I find it rather funny I've come across this post of yours at this time. I was just thinling about why am I still paying for an autoresponder that I don't use and barely has in the past. I am considering axing the autoresponder. I don't like writing emails and while I did grow a small list back when I had Aweber, I'm not that into affiliate marketing any more that I need a list anyway. I do understand all the reasons of building a list but I don't even try recruiting anymore as affiliate marketing has left a bad taste in my mouth. Since I've been here on Hive, I like the way I can earn without trying to convince others to try what I do. I'm really thinking about axing the list as that's $18.00 I can put somewhere else that I'll actually use & get results from, like buying tokens to increase my portfolio on Hive. I'm no longer interested in the referral game.

What do you think about that?

Hi @successchar.

I totally understand, but in my case, I put in a lot of time into the online marketing off chain, so I figure that I use those efforts to bring folks onto HIVE.

I also have past investments in advertising upgrades that would be foolish for me to let it go to waste.

I use LeadsLeap and it’s worth every penny.

Yes, HIVE will always be priority over any of those things.

If I were to end up in a position that I could only do one thing- it would definitely be my HIVE activity. It’s almost that now lol.

Thanks for your comment 🙏🏼

It's good to hear that someone understands. All I here folks say is that the list is the most important thing. So, I'm hearing you say that if I'm happy with just doing hive, there's nothing wrong with me dropping the autoresponder? Espicially since it hasn't been fruitful for me.

I truly understand how your past investments would be in vain if you didn't take advantage of them now.

I tried to use LeadsLeap before but didn't quite understand it so I left it alone.

I tried building list but my niche is too weak, which is programming. I am going to give the substack a try and also using the Listnerds too. But I feel the programming niche is too weak to get people in. I have to branch out to other niche for list marketing to work. :)

Having a drilled down niche is great, because you can build a subset of subscribers that can grow into a community much easier because the competition wouldn’t be as much.

Then you can bring that community here to HIVE with you.

I’m dipping my toe into the ocean while you are dipping into a pond. I was on the brutal spectrum and happy I’m now on HIVE instead.

Heck, you should be able to build a list on HIVE. There are plenty of devs on the blockchain?

Thanks for coming by 🙏🏼
