Saved by the Phone Call .... (fiction)

Stella’s gait hardly made a sound as she sat opposite the man who was to check her credentials for the new appointment she got with Atlas and Sons. The company was highly reputable, and anyone who worked for it was the envy of everyone. Stella knew that beyond her merit, a fettle pulled by her uncle, who happened to be a friend of the Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O. ), got her the new job as an assistant manager in the company. Excitement was written all over her face as she was all smiles and a humble "Good Morning" to the man who was to review her credentials. Stella noticed the man hardly looked up and only mumbled some incoherent words as a response to her greeting.

The man right before her had some gray hair on his head and a mixed black and gray moustache, which, in addition to his physique, which was of average build,Stella concluded that the man was in his early fifties. The man barely looked up at Stella as he traced her name among the several recruits the company had recently made. He had his navy suit unbuttoned to properly reveal his pink tie, which just extended beyond his belly button and white inner shirt. His chocolate-dark complexion and accent as he asked for Stella’s appointment letter made Stella assume he must be from the western part of Nigeria.

"And where is your first school leaving certificate?" The man asked Stella with a look of disgust. Stella wondered if the man must have been angered by previous recruits earlier screened by him or if it was just his nature to sound unfriendly to strangers. Stella looked at him for a moment, wondering what to say to him to make him loosen up a bit, but realized she would only be knocking on a wall, expecting it to open up as a door.

"I am sorry, sir; however, the affidavit was issued in its stead as the school declined issuing another after I lost the one originally given by the school." Stella responded politely, as she managed to show her humility.

"This shows how careless you are, and you expect us to entrust the company’s assets to your custody?" I do not think you are ready for us. "If you cannot get your first school leaving certificate, you can leave my front this instant!" He bellowed, causing a deafening silence for those behind her waiting to be screened. Stella looked at the man, surprisingly wondering what she may have done to deserve such treatment. She knew she was beautiful with a charming physique enough to attract people and had put a simple black shirt underneath her worksuit with a pair of pants to match; however, this was totally strange to her.

"Okay, sir, thank you, sir." Stella replied as she stood up to permit the next person to sit for the screening. She walked out of the crowded hall into the open as she dialed her uncle’s number.

"Good morning, Uncle, I have just been excused from the screening exercise without completing it. "The man refused to listen to all I tried to explain to him, and he practically walked me out." Stella’s voice began to betray her as she was beginning to tear up.
"I am sorry about this. Give me a moment, and I will get right back to you." Stella’s uncle replied over the phone.

Stella stood on the porch as she unconsciously tapped her feet to the ground in apprehension and anger at what had just transpired with the man conducting the screening. After hardly five minutes of standing outside, she turned to see the man that had chased her out receive a phone call with a dropped shoulder as his lips read some "Yes sirs," which caused a chuckle to pop on her face.

"Miss Stella, please come over." He called out to Stella, murmuring some inaudible words to himself as he tried to hide his dejection as he barely lifted his head to look at Stella in the face.

"You did not have to go far; let me have your documents." "I am sorry for the misunderstanding." He said as he neatly enveloped Stella’s documents and handed over some documents to Stella to fill out and return to him, which included her acceptance letter. Stella knew her uncle pulled the string once again as a smirk appeared on her face after a "thank you" to the man.

Maybe that's why I want to be an entrepreneur and my own boss.
I don't think I can endure this and all sort of things people go through to get a job.

Well challenges are meant to make us strong though and I do like to face them with pride rather than have someone stand in for me.

You're right, the society has pushed us to have someone backing us before we can get what we desire

And its too bad that we can't achieve alot on our own unless we ask for backups like this

A series of events that make Stella anxious, but I think it's great that everything turned out well.

Stella's uncle's connections turned out to be her salvation from humiliation and the possible loss of the job. And what a joy it is, I mean, having connections both in the low and high places. In some situations it can literally save one's life, or take you places others only dream of.

Thanks for sharing your story, It was an enjoyable read.

Stella definitely got a break when her uncle pulled some strings to get her the job. Some might wonder whether it was an ethical move on the uncle's part!

We have some feedback for you. In this story, we are seeing the events from Stella's point of view. It is her story. So when you describe what she looks like, the reader has to wonder who's point of view you have switched to. In other words, she is essentially telling the story. So the story must be told in such a way that we only see what she can see.

For example, she would not see the smirk appear on her face:

Stella knew her uncle pulled the string once again as a smirk appeared on her face

You can read more about the do's and don'ts of describing characters in this article.

I don't think Stella deserved that treatment whether or not she was supported by someone with decision-making power in the company. The man was very rude and he had to put her head down. Very well written.
Greetings @jjmusa2004
