Well, this post is a processed and edited record on a set of photos captured during a single afternoon in the streets of my village (Montalbán, Carabobo, Venezuela)... As some of you may know, I'm a kind of pseudo-ascetic enjoying taking pictures in this small town whose population is only decreasing with the passing of the years... So it's not surprising that I end up "making things up" when I go out for my street photos.

Bien, este post es un registro procesado y editado de un conjunto de fotos capturadas durante una misma tarde en lasa calles de mi pueblo (Montalbán, Carabobo, Venezuela)... Como quizás algunos de ustedes saben, yo soy una especie de pseudo-asceta disfrutando de hacer fotografías en este pequeño pueblo cuya población no hace más que mermar con el paso de los años... Así que no es de extrañar que termine "inventando cosas" cuando salgo a por mis fotos callejeras.

Well, that afternoon when I captured these photos, the word "rectangles" entered my head. I think that had to do with my first intention to capture some abstract street motifs, which I usually do on facades of old houses including their windows and doors. But one thing is for sure: "Street photography doesn't always end up as planned, but as it wants to"...

Y bien, esa tarde cuando capturé estas fotos se ha metido en mi cabeza la palabra "rectángulos". Creo que eso tuvo que ver con mi primera intención de captar algunos motivos callejeros abstractos, los cuales suelo hacer sobre fachadas de casas viejas incluyendo sus ventanas y puertas. Pero, algo sí que es seguro: "La fotografía callejera no siempre termina como tenemos planeado, sino como ella quiere"...

One thing that street photography has is "diversity".... I mean it's not just about streets and nothing else... Also the human factor runs like blood through the veins of street photography and that's where the subjective begins to play a fundamental role when taking this kind of photos.

Algo que la fotografía callejera tiene es la "diversidad"... Me refiero a que no se trata simplemente de calles y nada más... También el factor humano corre como la sangre por las venas de la fotografía callejera y es allí donde lo subjetivo comienza a jugar un papel fundamental cuando se hace este tipo de fotos.

In my particular case, sometimes the typical drama I observe in my streets gives way to a less complex perception and I tend to open myself to the abstract. This feeling of "evaluating" what I see with the aim of turning it into something more relative to my desire to create something, makes me detach myself a bit from the real street and start looking at everything as a kind of "creative game"...

En mi caso particular, algunas veces el drama típico que observo en mis calles, da paso a una percepción menos compleja y tiendo a abrirme a lo abstracto. Esta sensación de "evaluar" lo que veo con la finalidad de convertirlo en algo más relativo a mi deseo de crear algo, hace que me separe un poco de la calle real y comience a mirar todo como una especie de "juego creativo"...

I usually do the same as always, I can even talk to people and take a portrait of them, or spend half an hour in front of an old façade exploring the details of every crack, window or door, while greeting and chatting a bit with those who pass by on the street. However, inside me, the need to look at the whole environment as a possible photo does not cease. It is there that I perhaps begin to imagine many things as "divided into rectangles".

Suelo hacer lo mismo de siempre, incluso puedo hablar con personas y hacerles algún retrato, o pasar media hora en frente de una fachada antigua explorando los detalles de cada grieta, ventana o puerta, mientras saludo y converso un poco con aquellos que pasan por la calle. Sin embargo, dentro de mi, no cesa la necesidad de mirar todo el entorno como una foto posible. Es allí cuando quizás comienzo a imaginar muchas cosas como "divididas en rectángulos".

I confess that I find a "strange pleasure" in feeling that I carry my camera full of those little rectangles of things that other people simply overlook.... Then I end up feeling as if I have some kind of "super-power" (Yes, I know, I'm starting to sound strange, it happens to me, you know).

Confieso que hallo un "placer extraño" en sentir que llevo mi cámara repleta de esos pequeños rectángulos con cosas las cuales otras personas simplemente pasan desapercibidas... Entonces termino por sentir como sí tuviese algún tipo de "súper-poder" (Sí, ya lo sé, estoy comenzando a sonar extraño, suele pasarme, ya ustedes lo saben).

And then, arriving at my office and downloading the photos to my PC and then editing them is like "going through those streets again"... It is there where I give free rein (as for example in the case of the photos in this publication) and I start to rotate, crop, modify, etc... In short, it's a bit (within my limited artistic faculties) "creating and fantasizing"... I can almost feel like "painting" a bit.

Y entonces, llegar a mi oficina y descargar las fotos en la PC para luego dedicarme a editarlas es como "recorrer de nuevo esas calles"... Es allí en donde doy rienda suelta (como por ejemplo en el caso de las fotos de esta publicación) y comienzo a girar, recortar, modificar, etc... En fin, es un poco (dentro de mis limitadas facultades artísticas) "crear y fantasear"... Casi puedo sentir como si "pintase" un poco.

There is a whole universe to explore in the street environment when you wander around with a camera in hand and a head full of expectations and ideas. You have to blend into the streets, obviously... But at the same time it is necessary to "float" a little above them and have a more impersonal perspective of what you are observing... That coming and going between one and the other thing, it is perhaps what allows us to capture the full details which otherwise would go unnoticed... Be that as it may, it is something delicious to do and it is also a "creative therapy" for those of us who lead a way of life a little outside the standards...

Hay todo un universo para explorar en el entorno callejero cuando se deambula por allí con una cámara en la mano y la cabeza repleta de expectativas e ideas. Hay que fundirse en las calles, obviamente... Pero al mismo tiempo a veces es necesario "flotar" un poco por encima de ellas y tener una perspectiva más impersonal de lo que se observa... Ese ir y venir entre una y otra cosa, es quizás lo que permite captar el pleno de detalles los cuales de otra manera, pasarían desapercibidos... Sea como sea, es algo delicioso de hacer y también es una "terapia creativa" para aquellos que llevamos una forma de vida un poco al margen de los estándares...
