In recent days my wife asked me: Have you seen the flowers of one of my wax plants?... I answered "no" and asked her for the place in our garden where this plant was.

En días pasado mi esposa me pregunto: ¿Haz visto las flores de una de mis plantas de cera?... Le contesté que no y le pregunté por el sitio en nuestro jardín en donde estaba esta planta.

I have to admit that, when I looked at those flowers, I almost fainted with emotion... They are truly fantastic!... The variety of wax plant (Hoya carnosa) that my wife has there has a deep magenta bloom, but perhaps the most charming thing is the hairy texture at the edges of the flowers, which are borne in a radial cluster from a single point where the buds are generated, similar to the way dandelion seeds born.

Tengo que reconocer que, cuando miré aquellas flores, casi me desmayo de la emoción... ¡Son algo verdaderamente fantástico!... La variedad de planta de cera (Hoya carnosa) que mi esposa tiene allí, posee una floración de un color magenta intenso, peor lo más encantador quizás sea las textura pilosas en los bordes de las flores, las cuales nacen en un ramillete radial desde un punto único en donde se generan los botones, algo similar a como nacen las semillas de diente de león.

I immediately went back inside the house and thanked my wife for the news about these flowers, then I went into my room and took my camera and proceeded to put my 100mm macro lens on it.

De forma inmediata volví al interior de la casa y agradecí a mi esposa la noticia sobre estas flores, luego entré a mi habitación y tomé mi cámara y procedí a colocar mi lente para macros de 100mm.

The day was quite sunny and these flowers received quite generous and direct light. So this made it easy to capture these images in natural light and avoid using flash at all.

El día estaba bastante soleado y estas flores recibían una luz bastante generosa y directa. Así que esto facilitó la captura de estas imágenes con luz natural y evitando en lo absoluto usar el flash.

Under these conditions it is enough to stay between apertures of f/10 and f/7.1 as well as ISO between 250 and 640, use the semi-automatic aperture mode (A) and the autofocus of a single center point. This 100mm lens is not stabilized, so it's always good to take care to have at least shutter speeds less than 1/300s and try to hold the camera as well as possible (I hate using a tripod, because of this doing macros for me is almost a session of advanced yoga 😂).

Bajo estas condiciones es suficiente mantenerse entre aperturas de f/10 y f/7.1 así como ISO entre 250 y 640, usar el modo semiautomático de apertura (A) y el enfoque automático de un solo punto central. Este lente 100mm no es estabilizado, así que siempre es bueno cuidar tener como mínimo velocidades de obturación menores a los 1/300s y procurar sostener la cámara lo mejor posible (odio usar el trípode, debido a esto hacer macros para mi es casi una sesión de yoga avanzado 😂).

I took the shots in RAW mode, which allowed me to be quite creative with the editing later on, but without compromising the natural feel of these photographs. The RAW files were processed with Adobe Camera Raw and then exported to JPG format and minor adjustments were made with Photoshop... As these were close-up and macro shots, I used a lot of sharpening and clarity/contrast adjustments to increase the detail definition.

Realicé las capturas en modo RAW, eso me permitió posteriormente ser bastante creativo con la edición pero sin atentar contra el sentido natural de estas fotografías. El procesado de los archivos RAW fue realizado con Adobe Camera Raw y luego al ser exportados a formato JPG fueron realizados ajustes menores con Photoshop... Por tratarse de fotos close-up y macros, me valí mucho de los ajustes de afilado y claridad/contraste para incrementar la definición de detalles.

I had fun for a long time taking these photographs of this curious plant, which goes unnoticed almost all year round because its elongated stem structure and simple, moderately fleshy leaves do not constitute a very attractive set. But, as you can see, its flowers totally make up for its usual simplicity... My wife has already warned me that there is another wax plant in our garden, whose flowers are lighter in color with a tendency to yellow hues. I hope to be able to make macros of this when it is in bloom.

Me divertí un largo rato haciendo estas fotografías en esta curiosa planta, la cual pasa inadvertida casi todo el año pues su estructura de tallo alargado y hojas simples y medianamente carnosas no constituyen un conjunto demasiado atractivo. Pero, como pueden observar, sus flores compensan totalmente su sencillez habitual... Ya mi esposa me ha advertido que hay otra planta de ceras en nuestro jardín, cuyas flores son de un color más claro con tendencia a matices amarillos. Espero poder hacer macros de esta cuando esté en floración.
