Seafood Gumbo

I am allergic to shrimp but not all shellfish. I have no idea why I am able to eat crabs, crawfish, scallops, oysters, etc. with no reaction. If by chance I eat a shrimp though, I can go into anaphylactic shock.

When I am in the Galveston, Texas area there is a restaurant that I like to go to that serves wonderful seafood gumbo to order. I can ask them to double up on the crab meat but leave out the shrimp. When I tell them that I am allergic to shrimp, they make sure that everything is steam cleaned before preparing my bowl of gumbo.

The place is not very expensive either. It is much cheaper for me to enjoy a big bowl of gumbo made with a dark roux than for me to buy all of the ingredients to make my own. They also serve other dishes like seafood jambalaya or hamburgers.

This bowl of gumbo I ordered had at least six large oysters in it in addition to a whole lot of crab meat. It was scruptious!

I wish that there was a seafood restaurant close to me that would let me order gumbo without shrimp. Usually, the restaurant will tell you that they have chicken and sausage gumbo which is not the same.

I guess I must be hungry since I am thinking about gumbo early this morning.

Enjoy your day.
