ENGLISH

Swirling memories of that afternoon wander in my mind, as well as the murky sky of this morning that I face as I walk heavily towards some place that takes me away from the taciturn precincts of the town that was once my home. Tired more of myself than of my steps, I drag my thoughts that inexorably lead me to her. To Angélique's spell.

It is true that sometimes we roll the dice with our luck and risk without thinking; impulsively, as if a hand were pushing us into the abyss at the same time as it instills in us a questionable courage. I must admit with a slight blush that my cowardice I carried as a treasured amulet, which had delivered me from many dangerous situations. Fear also comes to an end. And to my regret mine chose a very bad time to end.

It was not the first time I had seen her, I had followed her before more with my imagination than with my eyes as I strolled during cold afternoons through the woods on the outskirts of town. She walked pretending to be distracted as she went about gathering herbs that she kept in her basket covered with a black tablecloth. Her slender figure of disturbing forms was not overshadowed by her gray dress with no major adornments. Her face was beautiful, dark, with strong features and striking eyes, but what attracted the most attention was the mole on her upper lip, which looked more like a sign of danger.

Since she was a child, she was always accused of being strange, because of her habit of reading strange books and keeping away from everyone. That got worse when she was left alone in that gloomy house, being just a teenager. Only cats for company that jealously followed her everywhere. She simply shut herself away and the intrigues and fears of the town only gave her the solitude she needed. Women hated her for her beauty and men for their indifference. As for me, I will only say that I was intrigued by her and tried to take advantage of every time I saw her to make my own map of her, her ways and manners, even her voice as she crooned as she passed.

The last week of October she was seen (Well, I saw her) very busy on her gathering walks in the woods. The siege of the ladies towards her, due more to envy than anything else, was only increasing and they lost no opportunity to make her the target of outrages. The worst was Doña Ofelia, who accused the beautiful Angélique, every Sunday in church, of having deals with dark forces in exchange for youth and beauty and even made her responsible for the accident in which her husband was left invalid, assuring that it was an "evil eye" of that witch. The truth was that one night, while Angélique was undressing in her room, Doña Ofelia's devoted husband lost his balance from where he had climbed to watch her and since then he lay prostrate on a bed.

That Sunday, the last day of October, Doña Ofelia's insulting outburst raised a mob of good ladies and faithful husbands who, with ropes and other kinds of blunt objects, went to look for Angélique in her house to do justice in the name of holy customs. I heard, first the shouts and expletives, then I saw the group of well-meaning people with better intentions go in the direction of Angélique's house. My treasured prudence (fear actually) did not stop me and I went out after them trying to calm down all that madness. The first stone hit the windowpane of Angélique's room, then another and another, accompanied by insults and threats.

The little mob grew louder and louder with each stone thrown at the old house. Suddenly the door opened. Everyone was paralyzed when she appeared (Maybe it was just me, but sometimes generalizing is good) she walked down the road with a serene step, dressed in infinite black, her hair loose as I had only seen her in dreams; suddenly a fierce wind flooded that place, the anger of the mob turned into fear, the big trees began to creak while all the gray of the sky fell right on top of us. Doña Ofelia was the first to flee, in her vain attempt she was lifted into the air, then another and another until everyone was spinning in the whirlpool. All of them, except me who witnessed undaunted how one by one they fell, their form changed into animals entangled in their clothes. I saw the truan who threw the first stone turned into a goat chewing his own shirt and so each one into a different critter.

All this was happening while I could see how from the mole in Angélique's mouth the elemental forces seemed to conjugate and emerge from that single point on her lips the fury of ancestral mysteries. Once the event was consummated, all the gray, all the wind, all the fury and all the mystery were reabsorbed by that magnetic vortex, black hole, what do I know, horizon of events.

Angélique as if nothing had happened, she walked a little towards me with her pretended distraction, picked up a brown cat, which just a little while before was throwing stones at her, made her affectionate while she hummed something that the little animal seemed to understand and got lost in her house closing the door behind her.

That same afternoon I left the village with what I was wearing and walked all night until this cloudy morning. I only know that now in the village there were fewer inhabitants, but as not everything is bad Angélique had a new cat, there were two goats, three geese, two dogs, a parrot and the last time I saw Doña Ofelia she was cackling and pecking at the window of the room where her husband lay prostrate. Meanwhile I continue dragging my steps, firm in the purpose of moving away, although a while ago I saw a curious weed, I wonder if it is one of those that the beautiful Angélique is looking for.
