3% Increase In Salary Is A Big Insult

avatar

It is getting tougher by the day with the cost of living. On 9th November the Public Servants Association (PSA) members marched to the National Treasury in Pretoria, South Africa over an increase in salary to cope with the rising cost of living.

Thembi Sibeko said: “We can't afford our children's school fees, stationery, and transport. We have to buy uniforms and there are also other expenses at home. Petrol is expensive. We can't even afford to buy enough food anymore. This 3% is a big insult."

The association demands 6.5% only to reach a deadlock of a 3% increase with the government with an extended monthly R1000 equivalent to $57.9 at the current exchange rate.

With no other source of income and relying on a salary alone with family or planning to start a family can be unhealthy for families financially.
A friend of mine in Port Elizabeth is currently expecting a twin, the first time he was told by the doctor the girlfriend is carrying a twin over the phone he said the phone dropped from his hand as he wasn't expecting a twin due to expenses.

Due to present-day financial difficulties, some of us are getting deterred from wanting to get married to raise a family, it is already tough surviving alone let alone with a wife and kid(s).

You want to be in a position to put some money aside for savings or investment after monthly expenses, the opposite is the case with most getting into debt to survive till the next payday, it becomes a repeated cycle with debt getting bigger and even worse when a partner isn't working or lost his or her job.

I have been such a situation in the past without a job, and no source of income, my health deteriorated drastically, and there was the feeling in incapable of providing for myself and to even supporting my girlfriend back then even though she was very supportive bring food from her mom and having to pay my rent twice.

I fear ever experiencing that in my life again Covid 19 almost took me there as I got retrenched, I now have Hive even though I was stubborn for a few months not to spend from my Hive income, it wasn't long till I had to live off Hive for three months before things got better.

Whether we get those x% increase we demand at work or not a second and even third source of income is vital to ease financial pressure, especially when a family is involved.

We owe it to ourselves to make Hive great

Structuring in salaries is/has been a contentious issue for years, excessively high earnings whilst majority on a much lower scale, majority unemployed have very little hope with no employment offers available.

Middle class, lower income earners and unemployed are being ignored with big gun Union Leaders making promises (still earning while you striking), along with Government playing a blame game about Covid/Colonialism etc., now gone too far down the rabbit hole.

Writing has been on the wall for a long time reverse apartheid does not work, BBBEE does not float the boat, factional fighting does not help.

still earning while you striking

and the R1000 monthly gratuity, which got me telling myself they are having it nice. Last time I check this kind of gratuity is common with government officials.

Based on what I have seen though, truth be told the BBBEE, or whatever it is called only opened up doors for corruption.

Really irks when likes of Eskom say the staff was "poached" on TV, no they were not! Many saw writing on the wall with BBBEE, they would no longer progress in the company, fled this country in search of a better life.

Many in top positions only arrived there via BBBEE, sourced many within Trade Union background, this is exactly why ANC still relies heavily on Unions backing them!

Corruption is rife throughout private and government with cut throat attitude, earning their millions why would they be bothered with the 3% increase on a man earning 5/10 thousand rand per month?

The number of people leaving SA for a better life is increasing, my ex-boss is now in the UK, these are talents leaving the country. One way or the other the impact is being felt.

why would they be bothered with the 3% increase on a man earning 5/10 thousand rand per month?

They have bigger plans to loot more than be bothered about the low income earners that voted them to office.

South Africa has been bleeding people since 1995, this remains the case with those educated, sadly too many continue to have families battling to put food on the table.

Isn't the social grant a motivation for making babies for some?

It is truly sad to hear this is happening around the world. That it gets harder for people to plan a future or to even be in a relationship.
Some people will never know or understand. Especially the ones in power.

Good Hive does exist.
Take care Joe

It is tough out there, the financial burden is just getting too much and those in positions to serve people don't see it that way, they will rather fill their own pockets.

You wouldn't mind some more !PIZZA would you?

Really sad and insult how they manage to pay less and less salaries...

We need to have multiple sources of income these days otherwise we are going to have a tough time depending on salary alone.

Totally agree! It takes time to manage new incomes but it's the only way to have a better life.

Excellent post, this is happening in many countries across the globe, the cost of living doesn't comply with the salaries being paid on the available jobs. From the US, UK, Europe and Australia there are pay strikes all over. The solution is that most of these companies have to relinquish more of their profits to the ordinary workers and not to dormant shareholders. Thank you for sharing and enjoy Friday and the weekend ahead :}

It is a global issue at the present day, it just doesn't matter where one resides in the world. It is only slightly better from one country to another. The truth though is we can't rely on salary alone, we have to source other sources of income.
Happy weekend bro, have a good one.

Wages haven't been keeping up with the current inflation rates for a while now. It just seems to happen quite often and I tend to blame that more on the politicians because they keep cycling those tax dollars to their friends and making our pie smaller.

The people that vote them into office are forgotten when these politicians get into power, it is a sad reality around the world.

Its definitely tough out here bro, i feel you. My increases are about the same. We hope for more. If we keep scrapping and saving, maybe our foundation that we build here will be worth it, we hope.
