Africa's Longest Graffiti Mural Part 31: CCC's Street Art Contest #181

avatar

It was another week of beautiful, stunning murals from around the world. You've got to participate in the contest if you are a street art lover.

Have a look at last week's entries and winners here and while at it do read up on the rules.

Now to this week's contest, this is my entry for CCC's Street Art Contest #181.

Also, this is the 31st series of the longest graffiti wall in Africa.

Benin is known for masquerades, I used to be scared of them when I was younger due to stories I was told about them. While I was in Benin last year I asked my cousin if the masquerades are still a thing, he said yes but they are only done in the villages.

Masquerades normally accompanied by a festive, I think...

The artist did well to give a picture of how Benin and probably how West African masquerades perform

The dusty clay soil as there are lots of movements involve with crowds...

A look at the graffiti wall as it comes to an end after two more posts.

A look back at how far we have come with this wall, it and been nothing short of fun for me.

A glimpse of next week's series...

The artists involved in this section of the wall.

This mural (Effet Graff) is located in Cotonou in the Republic of Benin.

The Effet Graff festival aims to achieve the longest mural wall in Africa.

The Egungun is a secret society of masqueraders of the Yoruba People who live in the area of Western Nigeria and Eastern Benin.

Apparently ritual cleansing and prayer during this time, would have been interesting to witness, although frightening to a child!

Yes, you got it lol, Egungun is the name I grew up knowing it as in Nigeria and I would run away when I heard "Egungun is coming"

It is accompanied by ritual or prayer also, it will be interesting to witness it now that I am an adult.

Being an adult you may understand reasoning behind the ritual, so many rituals for each tribe or region throughout Africa.

I agree, they might make sense instead of the perception I had when I was a kid.

When young it's either scary or fascinating no in between 🙃

Beautiful drawing of a colorful masquerade, I heard stories about these kind of events when I was young but never get to experience it myself because I mostly lived in the city. The atmosphere during these events must be exceptionally charged :)

Likewise, I am a city boy, I grew up hearing stories about them, freighting ones most of the time 😃

The most frightening one I've heard is that this masquerades fly the sky at night looking for kids who are outside idling when they should be indoors asleep, and then they abduct those kids never to return them back :)

Hahaha 😃😃 that is such a cool one that we believed when we were kids 😃

Exceptional graffiti artwork of the Beninese artist.
I grew up around these manifestations of our traditional dance and religious expression.
What magnificent artwork!

Great artwork bro, the masquerade festivals or ceremonies are always exciting from the stories told and some that I saw in Nigeria.

How are you dear friend @joetunex good morning
I love the different rituals of the towns, it's good that these traditions are still preserved in the villages.
Yes, this work is really great, and how beautiful and colorful it is.
I appreciate you sharing all this information and the beautiful photographs.
Have a splendid day
