Alcohol, Cryptocurrency, And The Plebs

avatar

Alcohol has always been part of our society, we are talking about a beverage whose existence began around 7000 B.C. Consumed for different reasons, rituals, social gatherings, and relaxation. The question that comes to mind is whether we are abusing alcohol in the modern day or if it was this abused back in the old days as well.

I received a text message from a former neighbor last week, telling me she has been hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer. It was a shock for me, as she is a young lady in her early thirties.
I might be wrong but all I could relate to the cause of the cancer is the rate at which she consumes alcohol. Back then when she was my neighbor, alcohol consumption wasn't a weekend thing, it was rather almost daily, and when I chatted with her over it. The excuse was it helps her to de-stress.

Above is a Tweet that not only prompted me to write about this topic but it also portrays a positive message of what can be achieved by stopping alcohol abuse.
Some of us take our health for granted until it is too late while chasing all the fortunes and money in the world without good health, I don't see how we are going to enjoy life.

Last week Friday as early as 7 am while my project partner and I were driving to the site, I saw a lady with a bottle of beer in the street drinking and swearing that early in the day.
The same day on our way back very late around 11 pm, a drunk driver was driving in the wrong lane towards us facing oncoming traffic.

I find it baffling how people go on about weekends. For some, it is time to live life to the fullest through alcohol abuse. What happens to consuming alcohol moderately?

Plebs are finding it tough out there, putting food on the table and paying bills are getting tougher but they seem to always have the budget for alcohol.

Sometimes I wish I have the money they spend on alcohol so I can buy cryptocurrency for stacking.
We often complain about how things are tough financially but the little money we have is spent on things that are of no positive impact on our lives, the way and manner we spend the little we have is a reflection of how we are going spend when in possession of big sums of money.

Only if we can all get our priorities right, life will be a lot easier.

Always in moderation, some medicinal some not so much, oh boy first thing in the morning is sad to witness, wrong side of the road is scary!

People drown their sorrows of late, one notices more and more younger people living in the bush yet will always have glazed eyes from one substance or another.

We were driving through Westbury to avoid traffic on Main road, the next thing I saw was a lady with Black Label beer swearing at someone across the road lol.

Crazy stuff that early.

Hahaha obviously the area hasn't changed much! Believe it or not we had people we knew who lived there and used to visit at our own risk, long time ago.... Now I would be nervous just travelling through.

That must have been before I came to SA in 2008, I missed the time when there was KFC, there is KFC not far from Delarey which is in Begbron on the other side.

Some people don't know how to drink... Excess of everything is harmful! Accumulating more crypto will be good for the future so I don't spend much on luxury spending.

Some just can't place a limit to there alcohol consumption. When it's beyond normal it's no longer drinking for relaxation, it's abusing the body and wasting money as well.

Once a person becomes addicted to alcohol, they're on a path of downward spiral. The path of addiction starts when people consume alcohol to escape and/or forget their problems for awhile. I know a few people who use it as a clutch in life and it's taking them nowhere. You tend to get disconnected from reality.

Maybe it works for some but not me, when am stressed, drowning myself in alcohol never helps, my system tells me no hiding behind alcohol so I'd rather confront my problem.
When it gets to the level of addiction then it's a problem that not only affects the person but also family and possibly friends.

@joetunex - you should see it over here in Wisconsin...it's a way of life. I have some stories for you at the brewery I used to work at.

If anything, I've noticed that consumption seems to have increased since COVID in this area...moreso than the baseline that it was. Personally, I'm on a cleanse as I hit the holidays because everyone here likes to drink for the holidays

It sounds like not only is this I South Africa but it appears to be the same over there by you as well.

I wonder why the increase in alcohol consumption since Covid, probably their way of staying immune to Covid19 infections lol.

It is sad though seeing people waste their lives away over alcohol. Life is too good to screw up my system with alcohol.

@joetunex yes it is; I don't mind it in moderation, but I've known too many people in my short time on this planet to lose their health/lives to the bottle.

Moderation does it for me as well, a glass of wine or a bottle or two of beer and am a happy enough chap 😃

Life is about balance.

I have heard so many stories of very successful people die young, or all the wealth only to pay for wife’s boyfriends, or all the wealth only to pay for medical bills.

Every action we take should be carefully thought of, indulging acts that could impact us negatively or cost us our lives should not be entertained, alcohol abuse inclusive.

Some dude told me some time ago that all he does is bet, drink booze and pay bills when his salary enters, sadly this is what many do. I know that most of crypto is a bet too but I’ll rather bet with my choices in crypto than bet on sports

Bro that sport (soccer) betting thing I've tried it and am a failure at it lol. I won a few times but the losses are way too much and I stopped. I'd rather also bet on crypto than sport with boozing my life away.

I am glad that I don't drink alcohol much and I just don't like the feeling of being drunk that much. It's too bad that it's like an addiction to a lot of people and I also prefer to spend my money on things other than alcohol.

The after-effect feeling of being drunk is terrible, I don't understand how it is okay for some to be a frequent weekly indulgence.
I am very particular about what I spend my money on.

That would be a sad case for your former neighbour if her cancer is caused by drinking too much alcohol. It's a pity that there is a lot that people go through in their lives and most use alcohol to desensitize the feeling and escape reality for a moment.

Unfortunately, once one rise the dopamine their alcohol dependence becomes a mental disorder and the urge to drink becomes uncontrollable. I always try to put myself in their shoes as no one in their right sense would choose to lose it all over alcohol.

What is frustrating is once their in, they do not recognize that they have a problem and that they need to seek help or make changes to their lifestyle. It's a sad reality that you just shared Joe!

It is a sad one Humbe, this reminds me of my ex-colleague, though for him it was both drugs and alcohol, he was so deep in that not even rehab could fix him. I suppose when people cross that level of chronic addiction fixing them becomes very difficult.
It is vital we choose our activities wisely before indulging, if we can't control our limit, it is better we keep our distance.

That's a sad one. So if rehab could not fix your colleague, what happened to him then?

At some point he was okay but fell back into the same addiction after rehab, we have lost contact for about five years now. I hope he is okay.
