How scarce are Diamonds?

avatar

Myself and barski chatted about how Diamonds are monopolized recently and few days later Lex Fridman hosted Saifedean Ammous on his podcast Diamonds are a scam that was a strong topic that caught my attention. It might interest you to check it out just a 4:49 minutes video.

I am neither for diamonds nor against it, personally am less of a jewelry person so I careless about the precious stone.
Since we are looking at scarcity, how about a comparison of Diamonds with Bitcoin?

A major factor that have been impacting the price of Bitcoin is its scarcity nature with a max supply of 21,000,000 and 19,041,775 currently in circulation. Basically 21mil Bitcoin have been coded to exist and there's nothing anyone can do to add or reduce the supply. Therefore with demand and supply at play Bitcoin is bound to keep increasing in price value.

According to data by Statista Russia holds the world's largest Diamond reserves of 1.1 billion carat as of 2021, Botswana second with 300 million carat. Basically there's abundance of diamonds, June, 2021 Botswana found the world's third largest 1098 carat diamond. The question here is with so much abundance why are diamonds so scarce?

Alrosa and De Beers share approximately half of the world’s diamond production. In 2018, Alrosa comprised 26 percent of the world’s production and De Beers totaled 25 percent.

De Beers gets mentioned a lot in the comment section of Lex's podcast, barski also mentioned De Beers when we had a chat about diamonds. Perhaps there is a case to restriction of diamonds supply to enjoy monopoly considering majority of the systems in place are monopolized. You establish a system/product, create demand for it, have it monopolized and you've got the power.

Most of us only buy our first diamond when we get married with the intent of giving our wives something valuable. Another question is how good are diamonds at retaining value?

Saifedean Ammous referred to diamonds as scam, the above comments are not far off Saifedean's view on diamonds considering the amount they go for at initial purchase and selling price years later. A look at the cost of diamonds on Browns SA, 0.3 carat with a color goes for $1,352 at minimum while top of the Protea Solitaire diamond ring range 3.0 carat goes for $85,372 one color as well.

As mentioned earlier am neither for diamonds nor against it but, I think I have incidentally touched on a topic that requires some deliberation if am to buy diamond ring for my bride someday. $85K on a diamond ring is a no for me, you really want to give your wife something that will appreciate in value so even in times of financial difficulty and you are no more, it can be sold to ease financial burden.

Diamonds restricted in supply to drive up its price? I think so.

I didn't know Botswana had a lot of diamonds, I was thinking maybe Rwanda. One can actually say Russia is wealthy in all aspects, that's why Putin is arguably the richest ruler in the world.
I'm not a fan of jewelery like you. Except probably for wrist watches.

I didn't know this as well until I gathered information for this post, Botswana is second to Russia while Congo DR ranks third in countries withlargest diamond reserve.

Russia is rich and powerful, reason why it can on attacking Ukraine without fear.

I think it all has to do with supply and demand. If you can control the supply, you can influence the pricee!

And so far it looks like the supply is being effectively controlled for higher price.

I don’t bother with them actually either, just thought let’s read your post when I saw it 😊 and say hi 👋🏻

Good to hear all is well. Here too. Busy… busy 🤓

O my… a power cut of 2 hours, not nice on a cold night. Hope it comes on soon again. 2 hours are almost gone.
When we lived in Malta we had that many times…

We just had dinner and after that I needed to fill in our taxes for the previous year. O joy hahaha not. But we have too… all done now so can forget for a year again.

Have a wonderful evening further… if too cold get a blanket and wrap around you. Or light a lot of candles 🕯 😊

Good morning littlebee4 I ended up retiring to bed earlier seeing I have done all that needs doing on Hive for the day and having to be in the dark for 2 hours.

lol I wasted no time getting in the blanket, it was a struggle getting out of bed now with temperature at 7 degree Celsius.

Good morning @joetunex 👋🏻😊
I can imagine that, that was the best plan to do.
Cold mornings do tend to get that way. Just sticking out a foot hahaha bbbrrrr

Here where I live the houses are not insulated and do not have heating for the winter. As most are holiday rentals. And people don’t live here all year round. But for the few locals that do… we have to suffer with cold and wet houses in the winter.
Temperatures inside do go under 10 degrees Celsius and that is cold when you sit down. It gets so cold that you feel it all the way to your bones… not funny. Especially with marble floors or concrete walls.
Not many people realise that side of Spain. Especially in the South. In the north they do tend to have heating.
But our move will solve this problem… one day. Hahaha

I really can relate to the cold getting to the bones, my floor is tiles so even with my stockings and winter push-ins on it doesn't take long for my feet to start getting could, so put a small mat under my feet, I bought a winter hot water bottle few weeks back and its been helping keeping my feet warm. As long as my feet is warm am okay, freezing feet can be very uncomfortable and that where you catch cold quite fast.

I soooo know. We are sitting with blankets, lots of layers. Some even with hats and gloves inside.
We put a comforter (thick blanket) in doorways to the living room so we keep that room the warmest in the winter. Thick mat where we sit too, just like you.
The things we need to do to stay warm 🤣 but it’s spring now and soon summer. So all good, warm days ahead 🎉🎉💃🏻💃🏻☕️☕️

Can’t wait to have a fireplace again… though. And snow ⛄️ To build snow sculptures… hahaha

I have never experienced snow ❄, it snows mostly in the colder parts of South Africa, Free State and close to Lesotho which is very cold there due to the mountains ⛰

Will love to experienced snow ❄, get out and play in it throwing snow ball 😃 I guess I will have to get to Europe to experience that or be in Free State in winter.

Enjoy the warm weather, very colder days are are for us here till July

I am writing a post today with some snow in it 😉 Coincidentally hahaha

It is fun, making snow angels and snowman ☃️ throwing snow balls.
When I was a kid, many moons ago 😉, we had proper snow in Northern Europe like the Netherlands and Germany. We could play for months. But now that kind of snow doesn’t come anymore there. Climate did change. Maybe 1 week a year, but the consistency is so different. It doesn’t stay either. It’s more like wet snow…
and here in Spain the same as where you are, around the mountains 🏔 there you find snow.

Maybe one day you can enjoy it 🤞🏻

We are in the opposite seasons now… I will enjoy our warm days, soon it’s to warm hahaha and then we complain about that hahaha lol
Keep warm @joetunex 😁

Supply and demand still play a major role here, no matter how precious diamond is if the supply is much it will be less valuable. I love jewelries but not me I love it on my woman

Girl's best friend they call it, it surely looks beautiful on women.
What is concerning to me though is if it gains value over time.

A true monopoly game, with maffia tactics involved. If you want to become a diamond seller in Antwerp, you will not get an easy start if you don’t have a foot in the door with the “mob”. It’s a weird world, where supply is a lot bigger than people think it is!

To retain and dominate monopoly over diamond business some mafia stuff unsurprisingly will be involved. You just can't rock up wanting to be a diamond seller. I can only imagine lots of control behind the scenes

I think it is also artificially restricted to increase prices because I don't think diamonds are that rare. Technology is fairly good now and I am sure they can synthetically produce them.

Artificial diamond are being restricted as well when I checked, so the whole restriction on supply and on artificial ones are to keep the market monopolized.

Diamonds all rated against, size (carats), cut, colour, clarity in other words the 4C's, when exceptional may be high value. Not all are equal one has to have a professional valuation.

Gold being a precious metal holds value when markets are unstable, we have others if you interested chrome, manganese, platinum, vanadium and vermiculite. Going into any of these markets one would have to have know how in market.

Nice to refresh on what is available in possible investment.

Investment-wise I will be opting for gold over diamonds, makes sense opting for something that appreciates value over one that I will have to sell at a lower rate.

Thanks for the beer!

You right gold and silver are still metals most are able to relate to, gold has historically been favoured.
