Ignore Making A Positive First Impression And You Might Miss Out On Opportunities

avatar

First impressions they say last and that is true if we have to look back at some times in our lives when we have to meet people, it could have been a job interview, a business meeting, or even a potential boyfriend or girlfriend relationship.

So do truly put in the effort to make a positive lasting first impression that will motivate a second and continuous meeting? The answer might be yes but judging by some actions, they are contrary to a good first impression.

I have two women in my life in South Africa whom I consider my mom, I call them mom each time we speak, and though they are not my biological mom, they've both played some caring and loving roles in my life which I still appreciate to date.

So one of my moms wanted the shade in her garden renovated, the existing one is in ruin proving no shade at the moment, so she wants it replaced with see-through plastic roofing.

She entrusted me with the task of finding someone to get the job done. After I had gone to survey what needs to be done, two people immediately came to my mind, my neighbor who I don't trust if he can but he does those small renovation kinds of jobs like painting, etc.
The second person that came to mind was Anthony my ex-colleague.
Talk about being handy, Anthony is good!

The Quest To Land My Mom The Right Person For The Job

Mom entrusted me with this task back in December, especially after I told her am leaving the country, she asked me to help to get it done before I leave.

I approached my neighbor, he was just days away from traveling home to Zimbabwe for the Christmas holidays. So he couldn't help.

The first week of January I contacted Anthony seeing mom kept calling and reminding me. I set up an appointment with Anthony so I can take him to mom. Not only was he late which can be overlooked, but he also showed up at my place to pick me up drinking alcohol and driving.

I told him to please finish that alcohol before we arrive at mom's place. He responded,

Joe you still haven't changed all these years, always serious.

Seeing my reaction I wasn't amused, he said he will finish before we get to mom's. I was worried he will be smelling alcohol for me this is not going to be a pleasant meeting.

It turned out we met mom at the gate just going to the shop quickly before we arrived, she got into the car with us and we went to her place to see the job that needs doing. Anthony still had his unfinished bottle of beer with him.

Anthony sent a quotation, which I passed it on to mom and she has been quiet about when to get the job done. To be frank, I wouldn't be impressed with the kind of impression Anthony left if he was to come to do a job for me, you can't be drinking and driving which is illegal in the first place, and you can't do that when going to meet someone for a job either.

Screw First Impression

I never thought about writing about this until Sunday morning during my walk to church when I saw two guys. By the looks, they do garden jobs because they had a weed eater and some garden tools with them.

One stood at the gate of the premises trying to get the attention of the residents and the other sat smoking not a cigarette but weed, I looked with surprise as I observed what was going on.

I walked on and looked back again to be sure of what I just witnessed.

It appears some job seekers have no self-respect and lack respect for whom they seek to work for.

It might be a small job that doesn't earn thousands of income, but from experience, an opportunity could be missed when one shows up lacking courtesy.

Work nowadays is becoming a rare commodity... much rarer, however, as a commodity is the seriousness of those who carry it out.
Hard times await us given the people who are around.

Finding a job has become rare, whether full-time, just part-time, or a once-off thing, showing up with the best version of ourselves can only do us some good.

Appearance and attitude make all the difference no matter what the job entails.

Unlike years ago a dress code always implemented, many today miss great opportunities when taking a slack attitude.

!LOLZ my son is currently having his hair and beard trimmed up, hopefully a successful interview, the first in two years!

After sending a CV out to over 1000 non-responding employment agents, banging on doors, used as 'trial runs' for ability, it appears his lighter shade is a tad on the wrong side of employment.

Literally ready to leave when covid struck, many have lost so much! Who do we thank, well those right now toasting champagne in Davos, their henchmen and politicians, they don't care about impressions, morals nor much else.... Rant over before I blow a fuse.

!LUV Stay strong in the move, it's the right thing to do!

Maybe he could re-visit the plan to leave again, he might find better opportunities outside the country.

I am glad that my mind is made up and I booked my flight already. All of a sudden I getting calls for jobs and when I respond am leaving they question it surprisingly.

I might come to KZN, in and out to come test the system there if they agree with. Y conditions I will be there for a day or 2 and then end over to East London for another day or 2 all depending on if my quotation is accepted and I want cash payment.

Leaving so soon I would demand cash payment, once bitten twice shy these guys will take you for a ride knowing you on your way out.

Not very pleasant here at the moment, promise of lightning and rain this evening, hopefully break this heatwave. Love East London pity the Eastern Cape has always been neglected as it has much potential.

Depending on where you based we will chat before you come and make a plan to meet at least once. !LOLZ

Lol yes, I need every cash, so doing a job and having to wait is not an option for me at the moment.

I checked the weather and the forecast says we only get rain in Feb though the weather looks cooler in Feb.

Great, will keep you posted, they've been quite over my terms and conditions 😃

It pays to act professional and be persuasive. I think many people think they can be 'laid back' and have it their way. But that's usually not the case simply because we're also subconscious creatures. When our subconscious mind picks up those signs or signals, we automatically see the person in that light even if in reality they are not like that. I personally messed up quite a few first impressions and I had to reiterate many times with both words and actions in convincing the other party that I'm not like what their subconscious mind perceive me to be.

We are quick to spot the bad in others just as spoting the good, this is something we have to be mindful of.
It is okay when we mistakenly gave the wrong impression of ourselves and the make amend rather than being nonchalant and believe it is the way to go about business.

Very true. As long as we're willing to make amends. We can do right on the wrong behavior.

It matters a lot if you want to make sure you got a long lasting job and it's too bad that there are a lot of people who don't care about it. It makes me wonder because I keep hearing the fake it until you make it when applying for jobs.

I hear the fake it until you make it saying as well and I wonder for how long that works because it just doesn't work for me. I suck at being fake and I know my genuine makes me lose at times but it helps me to sleep at night and I do find those that appreciate me for the real me.

Well, I don't blame them. With the large number of people chasing after good jobs, you need to stand out otherwise you won't even get the chance. It just increases your odds but you are technically cheating people though and most of what you need can be learned on the job anyways.

I met a guy in telecom to whom I sold my toolbox yesterday, I told him my area of specialty in case he gets projects so he lets me know because from what he told me he has been turning them down and that is the thing some jobs you just can't fake it, otherwise you it blows off in your face sooner than you expect.
