Losing a Four-Year Client Over Proof of Residence

avatar

My last week in South Africa was a pain as my phone surprisingly had a battery problem followed by my data connection issues.
I use the Rain internet connection which I pay $27 monthly, it was reliable and only had connection issues now, and then when I complain things get resolved fairly quickly.

So with my internet connection suddenly acting up, I called customer support and was told I need a SIM swap that will arrive on the 25th, two days before I depart from SA, those two days might seem unnecessary but for me it is not, I spend a lot of time online and I can get a lot done with a day’s internet connection, so I had to settle for the Rain SIM to be delivered on 25th. Thankfully I had a friend that connected me to his WiFi which was a great help to get my things done.

SIM Card Delivery

The courier guys arrived at my place on the 21st of February to deliver the new SIM. I was surprised and impressed with Rain but that was short-lived when the guys refused to hand over the SIM card to me. They wanted proof of residence, the one I provided was about 9 months old.

I explained I am an existing client of Rain and this is just a SIM swap and I don’t have current proof of residence. I also asked if I could use the Rain monthly debit statement which has my address on it but they insisted that wouldn’t help me to use Rain’s statement for my proof of residence.

They want a bank statement or another account statement I don’t have since I was unbanked in the country due to my work permit.
So they left with the SIM, I got a call from Rain later and I explained the situation. I was told to go make an affidavit at the police station for proof of residence.

This was life for me in SA for 15 years, to get the most basic of things, I had to sweat for it, I had to go through processes and that was a process I wasn’t keen on with less than a week before I leave the country for good. So I told Rain to close my account with them.
I was instructed to close my account by logging into my account, I couldn’t find the "close account" option so I let it be.

The Feeling of Liberation

Normally I feel dejected and stressed and start to find ways to make sure I get the required documents so I can have access to the simplest of things. This time I didn’t care, I needed the internet connection for my last days in SA but I wasn’t up for another lengthy process to achieve it.

I felt happy that all this crap I have been subjected to will now be behind me in a matter of days.

I used the Rain internet services for 4 years and for them to choose to lose me over proof of residence shows how impactful situations like this have been on me. If I wasn’t leaving the country I will have no choice but find ways to make sure I get it or rely on a friend to do it for me.

One of those things I go through in SA I am now glad it is behind me.

Just crazy… Joe.
The struggles of an expat living in another country. I so know…
Just think now, their loss.
I am sure you will have less struggles now in your new country.
(Do make sure that they can’t charge you further when you couldn’t find the close account option)

Have a beautiful Friday 👋🏻😊 soon it’s weekend!

It is crazy, some countries are better than others in terms of requirements, I was at MTN to sort out my internet connection and back at the airport to exchange Euro for the local currency here and it was fine without them giving me a tough time. That is the life I want lol.

I left the account without money in SA, so good luck to them trying to charge me.

It's been a beautiful Friday over here, do have a beautiful one as well thanks.

Yep… so many differences.
Already such a change. Without hassle. Yes, that’s the life you want and need after such a long time of only struggles.

Ok… that’s good.
Wonderful to hear the Friday was beautiful.
Here it didn’t rain today, I was observing a while the little birds outside. I discovered a little mouse that came to eat some seeds too. So cute.
Have a wonderful weekend 👋🏻😊☀️

Yes, this is the life I want Jackie, no struggles lol.

I wish it could rain here, the weather is harshly hot lol. One thing I miss about SA is the weather, Benin gets very hot and my body is suffering from it, not used to this kind of heat but I will have to get used to it.

It is nice when the birds and little insects come around. I haven't taken note of them over here yet.

Happy weekend Jackie, have a good one.

Some !PIZZA should do.

Yep, me too… no struggles and just be. That would be perfect.

That’s a change for you than. Your body needs to acclimatise a bit. It can take up to 2 months to do so. Give it time and drink loads of water.

You will once you are settling… now all is exciting and new. I so know 😎🤓

Thank you kindly Joe. Have a good one too.
Yep… nom nom…

Lol yeah, you get the feeling everything looks new and exciting like I woke up and found myself in a new world 😃

True, I need time to get used to the climate, I will just take it a day at a time and lots of water will do me a lot of good.

Merci

Thank you so much Joe 😊

That’s nice.
We had some rain yesterday, but we still went out to explore. Visited a castle and waterfall.
Today… snow started coming down since 11h. And everything is white again.
The night temperatures are below freezing 🥶 so it will stay. And it looks like all week. And every day more snow.
It will be fun 🤩 ☃️☃️☃️
It already looks so beautiful, big snowflakes ❄️ coming down… covering it all.
Let’s see if it gets as high as in January. It will be cool 😎
Have an awesome week 👋🏻

I'd rather do with snow now and dress warm all stuffed up than the heat over here lol.

It showed signs of rain a few days ago and that was it.
If am not mistaken you are still going to be in winter till May or earlier?

I went out to do some house shopping with my cousin's wife today. Honestly, it would have been tough without their help.

Thanks for checking in, Have a great week to you 🤗

Hahaha I can imagine. One can dress for cold, but never for the heat.
I so understand.

That’s a shame the rain didn’t come.
Winter will be until end of the month. But it looks like it will be longer. Then spring should start… as some plants were developing buds 🌺 and leaves. Hope they survive…

That’s good they help, especially they know areas and talk the language.
Hope you find something what you need.

You are welcome Joe 👋🏻 thank you so much 😊

Exactly! There's just no easier solution for hot weather.

Yes, I am just buying necessities now and she is very negotiating so I save lol. I let her do her thing while I watch with appreciation 😃

I so will enjoy the cold days… actually, there will be no hot summers up here in the north.
Summer temperatures are very moderate. 😉

I will, you do the same 👋🏻😊
Just brought the birdies some more seeds… the snow falls and it looks cool. They still fly to the feeder. ☃️

I recall you are not a fan of the heat so the cold weather is worth enjoying.

It is nice to know the summer over there is moderate, probably around 25 degree Celsius or less will be nice.

Sweet of you to be feeding the birds, they need the likes of you lol.

Yep, so I will enjoy… all nicely wrapped up with a blanket on the sofa.

Don’t think it goes above 23 degrees… it will be rare. It is such a big change…

The birdies surely need some help in the winter, especially with the snow blanket again ☃️☃️☃️
Good night Joe 😴😴😴

You will, it takes some time and the showers do help.
Also cold wet towels out of the freezer around the neck.
It sounds like Spain in the height of the summer with 90% humidity… you start sweating the moment you step out of the shower hehehe 🤭

You are welcome.

Yea, it’s good to think that way, what we already have done. And by the end of the year… we will have achieved a lot. We moved countries… set up a new life and everything else. It will be a lot 😎 let’s hope we will be happy. Let’s talk about it then again and remind each other of this conversation. It will be cool to look back 😉

Thank you so much Joe, I hope yours was great too.
Have a beautiful Sunday!

It is… moving countries is never ever easy. It is one of the most stressful things. The others are getting married, divorce, losing a job, moving… let alone moving countries and death.
So we are doing fine hahaha 🤣

Thank you so much Joe, all the best for your rest of the year too. 👋🏻😎
Let’s remember… 😉

Almost weekend 🤩

I'm glad you're finally done with the country if you ask me, it can be fraustrating when you have to always prove that you're legit. Imagine, because of a sim.

Am so glad to get out of that country Jose, I got very tired of the requirements put in my way to live in the country. I went to MTN Benin today to get a router for my internet connection and I was attended to like every other human even without me understanding French.

Am smiling so hard after reading this, life can be tough if you live in a country which you are not a citizen of and worse still if they don't want foreigners living there. It is regretful that they treated you that way, they have definitely lost a great customer and South Africa lost someone who could have added value to their country.
Wishing you the very best as you settle down into Benin; thank you for sharing and happy weekend :}

To be frank the treatment in SA of foreign nationals is very unfavorable, I think the government should rather prevent foreigners from coming to the country than allow entry and make life difficult for foreigners. I went through a very tough life in SA. I am grateful to make it out alive.

Happy weekend bro.

I would still try to close the account directly. Otherwise, they might chase you for it. I just think it's better to just close it and make sure it's done. I have noticed a lot of companies make things complicated and it's a huge pain. Good luck with your mobile plan in your new residence.

I will log in to the account and search for the close account option again and also send an email now that I am relaxed and have some time to spare. These companies are good at hiding the close account option so that people can struggle to leave.

South Africa is being run by totally incompetent individuals!

Living here my whole life we still walk into brick walls with bureaucracy at the most stupid levels! Glad you out of here, we will prevail.

Those laws became a norm and it was tough living with them if you don't have the requirements.

The country can do better and be stronger in a lot of ways.
I am loving Benin lol, tomorrow and going to see my aunts, my dad's younger sisters 😃

Everything implemented suits the rich who have accountants, lawyers and money at their beck and call to clamber through the quagmire of traps they have laid, most ordinary people can no longer negotiate!

Have a wonderful day meetings family, hope the language barrier is a hurdle you overcome quickly!

Negotiation is none existence for the ordinary. Live with it and just suffer.

I hope to overcome the language barrier much quicker, living in Benin will be a lot better if I can communicate lol.
A wonderful Saturday to you as well, many thanks. 🙂
