I have been treating myself to some of the food I have missed for over 15 years since I was in South Africa, one was the coconut juice I had the other day.

If I am not mistaken we are in the season of harvesting corn here in Benin, the same can be said for Nigeria as well.

The last time I had roasted corn was in Nigeria which was over 15 years ago, now that I am in Benin, I have been seeing roasted corn selling on the streets. It is a street food consumed as a snack, in Nigeria, it is consumed with Ube (purple African pear). I am not sure if they have Ube here in Benin but with or without Ube, the roasted corn is quite enjoyable.

My neighbor called while I was having a nap, a few minutes later when I got up to see her, she offered me roasted corn.
You can imagine my face lit up with a smile thinking I am about to have my first roasted corn in years.

It was hot but I was pinching already at the corn so I eat, I even had my first bite before thinking I should share the photos with you guys.

I had cooked corn in South Africa now and then when it is the season but never had the roasted one from a fire charcoal like it is made here in West Africa.

My snack for today 😉

We are in the season and I also prefer roasted corn because it tastes different.

It's expensive in my side here. Market women in Lagos are just skinning people alive with crazy prices.

I don't know how much it cost but I don't expect it to be expensive perhaps it is because of the cost of transporting if from other States in Nigeria to Lagos.

Now that shocks me that you never found roast mielies on streets of Jo'burg, a treat in Winter getting off Park Station to nibble while walking to Mooi Street in my first job....

Now I still braai here at home with the leaves on till the very last moment to open up onto do finishing touches dancing on the coals. Perhaps I'm odd I love samp as well with a dollop of butter lightly salted same way I eat mielies. Prefer mielies to corn not being as sweet.

Hahaha, those are the good old days be nibbling roasted mielies on the streets of Joburg, am always scared being at the CBD lol.

I had the small roasted one when the Sunday dish is cooked, the SA 7 color meal 😃.
Lol, you just reminded me of Samp, lol I liked it until I was made to dislike it by the maid that cooks where I worked as a gardener in my early days in SA. She will cook it with lots of water, it was bad, I couldn't eat it, and I always throw it away. When she dishes for me the samp is always at the bottom and lots of soup-like water on top 🤣.

But when my girlfriend cooked it I liked it. It was traumatizing eating that lady's samp lol.

I enjoy the mielies though the cooked ones.

Jo'burg CBD was totally safe when we were young I enjoyed the walk although quite a distance it kept me fit, miss having trains like we had to commute.

Samp has to be made slowly, never watery, nothing worse than soggy samp, mielie pap or oats 😒

I wish I experienced the safer days of Joburg, it has now become a place that I needed a very good reason to be otherwise I stay away. I guess the trauma of the day I was mugged remained with me...

Lol, exactly samp shouldn't be made soggy.

I prefer roasted corn to the boiled one. It just tastes so good when it is roasted! Last time I ate one was almost a year ago. Hopefully, will eat some in the coming months :)

If I have to choose I prefer the cooked one because it is softer to chew, some of us don't have strong dents to chew 😂

Lol, I see where you're coming from. There was an incident where it loosen the teeth of an elderly person. He vowed to never eat roasted corn again 😂

that looks great...what's the prep? do they spread olive oil over it ahead of grilling? We ususally do that with salt and pepper and butter, then roast it over charcoal - yum!

Thanks, over here we only spread salt over it and place it on a light-heat charcoal.
I am liking the idea of butter, which will come out with a nice making it succulent.
