Remote work preference

avatar

Advance technology coupled with the pandemic has seen part of the workforce opt for remote work at a higher rate compared to five or ten years ago. For some companies transition to remote work wasn't impossible unlike my field and others where you have to be physically present on site to get the job done. This of course led to job loses which some are still yet to recover from.

Scrolling through my LinkedIn feed was a post about job seekers turning down jobs because of cost of commuting. Majority of these must be those that have experienced remote work due to Covid or those whose place of residence is very far from the office, either way inflation is playing a part here.

It basically sucks when you start spending +20% of your net income on commuting. I have been fortunate in the past living close to the office, at a time I had to move closer to the office which was 10 minutes walk to the office and it has been the best working years of my life so far being a very good company to work for. I worked for a company last year and cost of transportation was $132 for a $380 salary. With my rental being $189 I was basically working for rent and food.

For those that can retain remote work, it is best to keep it that way with once in a week or two office attendance, this way employees are not going to nag often about a raise in salary compared to having to travel everyday to work with price of gas frequently on the rise.

It might be a win win for everyone if companies start adjusting and accommodating remote work, the advantages of saving on commuting, getting more work done could raise a debate but a lot depend on the employee on that, flexible working amongst other advantages are going to encourage remote work where possible.

As for the likes of myself that has to be physically present on site or office to get the job done there's very little to do in spending less on commuting unless one moves closer to the office.

I loved working from home, but now my employer wants me at the office daily.

If you are giving the same output of performance working from home and at the office, I see no reason why an employer wants employee(s) at the office that slave driving mentality some really enjoys it.
S/He likes seeing your face I guess.

For me in particular remote work is more convenient, as I prefer working with less or no supervision at all. Most people produce more results when they are left to work on their won without having to supervise them.

Secondly, as you stated, if it's a company that one can work remotely, it is better.

Working without being supervised is where I perform best, I remember telling my boss to go and have lunch because he was just all over me distracting in the name of supervising which was working on my nerves that day.
I do agree working unsupervised is better.

I also think remote work is fine so long as the work is getting done. It saves on renting/property fees for the employers and the employees saving both time and money for commuting.

I am looking at changing career to something with the blockchain space that will allow for remote work, if I get that coupled with time on Hive I will be happy.
One gets to save on commuting and spend time more with family.

Working remotely is very productive for me and I'm used to it. Although there are some disadvantages, there are many advantages. Most importantly, you don't have to worry about traffic, you don't have to carry things. This saves me at least 2 hours a day. Frankly, I feel freer by working remotely.

I have never worked remotely because my profession is to be on field but I can imagine the freedom of working remotely at the comfort of your home and not having to travel through traffic.

I am lucky in this regard as I usually work at a desk. The traffic is unbelievably bad where I am, sometimes I come back home in 2-3 hours in the evenings. That's why I'm more comfortable since I started working remotely. But I still have to go to the office sometimes. But I do this outside of traffic hours.

You are lucky, I hope it remains like that for you, spending time in traffic sucks, you get home tired. And am sure your family will prefer you working at home now to going to the office.

I am lucky in this regard because of the profession I have chosen. But of course it has its disadvantages.

Why walk? Install the wheels on the legs of the table and drive, without looking up from the main work)

Although, you know, some things are forgotten, lol, I already forgot that for half a year I worked on similar conditions not far from Kyiv, paying most of the money I earned for renting an apartment, and every morning I jostled in electric trains, and mere pennies remained to feed my family . It was a hopeless time then.

Some times we just had to make do with the situation, over here Covid game some employers the opportunity to exploit employees, that was my case, I earned double that but due to bills need paying I had to settle for crap. It sucks you know.

Yes, at such moments you are alone with yourself, no arguments work, quit, or be content with little.

With my rental being $189 I was basically working for rent and food.

This is the biggest definition of feeding from hand to mouth, in reality most jobs in Nigeria are like this. You're unable to save, unable to plan and unable to move beyond your means. Imagine working for just rent and food, what if an emergency suffices?

I was miserable, I hated being at work but had to just to keep my head above water. The most pathetic state man will find himself is to work for hand to mount, no growth no savings nothing. Sadly this is how our lives have been.

Well sometimes, we aim towards safety and this is how jobs like this takes advantage of us. It's a thing we go through everyday in Nigeria. Hahaha, I'm glad you got past that situation. It can be hellish.

My brother has been working remotely for the last two years. He prefers to work from home. He says it saves him the time and energy he spends on travelling. Plus, he can spend time comfortably according to his ease

Travelling can be a nightmare especially in cases where heavy traffic is involve, we get days where I get to seat in traffic 3-4 hours, get home tired and unable to do anything but sleep. Your brother must really be loving it, way better!

Yeah, I think he is loving it that's why he doesn't want to go back to office for work but to continue his work from home

Brother, with a salary of $380 and a fare of $132 + rent of $189, I didn't see what you said or called it "food." lol... sparrows eat more. This is real surrealism. you worked for a company and a trucking company, that's worse than slavery.

Lol, the remainder of the money is definitely not sufficient for me, just had to deal with it. It was pure slavery and it was a miserable period for me.

Working remotely actually works for both parties and many people like me still prefer it because it save time and time is the most important thing

When we put the amount of times wasted traveling to work and back, especially in traffic, we can have it channeled into something useful rather.
