Let's get intimate ...

... but it's not what you might be thinking 😁

Intimate Landscape Photography

Let's get intimate ...

I think I have said this already in another post of mine about Intimate Landscape Photography, but that was quite a while ago and maybe some of you didn't see that post:
The American photographer Eliot Porter might have created the term Intimate Landscape Photography. Eliot Porter had the first exhibit of colour photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1979 – an exhibit titled Intimate Landscapes.

In my opinion, an Intimate Landscape Photo is a part of a bigger landscape scene, showing smaller details, but different from close-up images or macros. It's somewhere between the grand vista landscape photo and a close-up or macro of a flower - it should show something and let the viewer be curious and think about the big picture. For more information you can also ask Google or your preferred search engine.

I love waterfalls, everybody knows that, but looking closer to the streams of water or the surrounding rocks and vegetation always surprises me by showing me details like interesting patterns or textures or colours as if a painter would have had some fun painting the rock faces.

I think this is the second Intimate "Waterfall" Photography post I have made ... I just love waterfalls and their loud and relaxing silence, what more can I say πŸ˜‰

Sometimes whole rocks shine like gold or there are golden scratches in sometimes dark rocks, what makes them shine even more golden. In most of these cases the (morning) sun is the painter who paints in gold.

I don't want to tell you too much about these photos or where I have taken them. It's not important where I have taken the photos, but it is important that you look at them and imagine the rest of the photo which you cannot see. If you can do so, I have done my job as a photographer to the satisfaction.

Different lichens or the running rainwater paint the rocks in different colors.

Intimate Landscape Photography - Waterfalls and Streams

The early morning sun conjures up golden streaks on the rocks over which the stream runs.

Intimate Landscape Photography - Waterfalls and Streams

It doesn't always have to be the mighty waterfall or the big vista - small details in or on the waterfall or stream can be much more interesting. People usually don't see them at all, because I can often watch them standing by the waterfall, marvel at the mighty water, take a selfie and then walk on without having seen what I consider really beautiful things.

Intimate Landscape Photography - Waterfalls and Streams
[click for fullsize view]

You might say now that some of the images are by no means Intimate Landscape Photos, I know, but in these you might see some of the details I have taken in the other photos, just as in the photo below.

That was it for today and probably for this week by me. I hope you have enjoyed some of the photos I have taken during the past weeks on different locations at different times.

Hello @johannpiber! At first, I'd wondered what intimate landscape photography is all about but now I know.

Indeed, one can glimpse beauty from looking closely at a section or minute part of a photo.

I love waterfalls too. Your photos are just lovely! 😊

But WOW you do it so well I had to view each one larger to truly appreciate them and there is no way I could pick a favorite they are all incredible

Good morning and thank you so much that you like the photos JJ 😊

The more I shoot such photos the more I like them, and to be honest, that way I can take even more different photos from a waterfall than usually I have taken only one or two photos of the waterfall itself. The surroundings are often so much more interesting.

When you're thinking of serious other things while taking photos they might not get as good as usual anyway, so it was a good idea to put it away ... and it was safer for the camera's life too ;)

Good morning and thank you very much for your kind reply, Zac, much appreciated πŸ€—

Unfortunately, some of the images are not as colorful or golden as I see them here. Must be the compression the server makes when I upload the images.

My pleasure Hannes,

Not to worry about the colors, as I can see them the way that they really are and its beautiful. The colors in my photo are also not the same due to the compression.

Cheers and thanks.

Now seriously, thank you so much, @kohsamui99, I really appreciate your very nice compliments on my photos πŸ€—
I have always tried to take such detail shots, but since a while I do even prefer to take such photos instead of big waterfalls.

The colours and especially the golden colour aren't as colourful as they are on my computer. That's due to the automatic compression I believe.

What a great title to peak everyone’s interest, Hannes. :) I don’t often see waterfalls and mountains and it’s always a pleasure viewing your amazing photos.

The photos are really intimate captures. They remind me of abstract paintings. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Perhaps the second photo from the last.

Must say the colouration in rock faces is what captures me, revealing the path water took etched into the earth telling the story of time.

Water flowing smooth texture not easy when working with, something I have tried at different places, these are exceptionally good!

Have a wonderful day.

Yeah, these colours are sometimes amazing and sometimes I can only guess why a rock is blue or red. I am going to try to find such spots again next time I go for a photo shoot.

You need a longer exposure time to smoothen waterfalls and flowing water, but that depends on the flowing speed of the water. To extend the exposuer time I use a Circular Polarizer Filter (CPL) and sometimes ND Filters which let less light onto the sensor.

Thank you very much Joan, you have a wonderful day too 🌞

When left alone to enjoy playing with the camera I have had some great times, especially on rivers where water is running quite fast.

Not great at it, but have some good fun!

Sandstone cliffs with water always throw different light, no sure of rock formation where photography took place, reminded me of sandstone by the tones.

Fun is the most important thing in photography for me, fun being outside and fun creating something nice with my camera.

I didn't find much out about the rock types in this area, and I couldn't tell them apart, but on one geology page they said something about limestone, dolomite, granite and some other types I even haven't heard before.

Wow! Stumbled upon your blog from a comment you left on my buddy's latest sunset post, @kohsamui99.

He found my blog as I as I've been posting from the neighboring island of Koh Phangan here in Thailand.

Love how the Hive goes round!

Those are some nice waterfall pics! Very cool post, and very interesting about the comparisons you show. Well written too.

Funny how it's about waterfalls. I just posted a short video of a waterfall on this island. Waterfalls are great! hahaha

Thanks for showing me this great photographer!

I enjoy this too, finding some tiny detail, in a huge waterfall, maybe it's one single rock... maybe only a crack? I do it on the beach too. A huge expanse of sand, and I can zoom in on a single, encrusted shell, or small snail, and see how it moves in the algae! A massive garden, and finding that tiny single blossom, to make the detail pop!
