I asked Google for information about how to become a "Minimalist Photographer". The first answer was "simplify, simplify, simplify".

So, what is minimalist and what is too much or even too less for still being minimalist? In this post I want to show you some examples and you decide yourself.

The above image is my contribution to this week's PhotoFeed Contest. The theme of the week is Minimalist Photography.

Especially in Autumn and in Winter I find it easier to shoot minimalist photos, because most nature is just white from fog or snow and it's a lot easier to find suitable photo motifs like a lone tree or a single buoy in the water.

Or can even shooting a castle result in a minimalist photo?

Minimalist photography stems from its initial art movement; minimalism, which was a movement in the 1950s that emerged in the United States, also known as Minimalist Art, Reductive Art or ABC Art. Do minimalist images have to be in black & white or at least monochrome? Or would a heart shaped cloud in the blue sky or a rock in a river also count as minimalist photography?

Fog isn't only best for woodland photography where it helps separating the trees from the background. Dense fog on the lake lets the messy background disappear and the swimmers platform gives a nice minimalist motif.

How about the last pink colours of a gorgeous sunrise that I have missed? I was up on a little mountain where the sunrise wasn't interesting at all and so I drove back down into the foggy valley. While driving, I saw the clouds getting more and more pink and until I found a spot to park the car, the colours faded slowly.

What do you prefer - a snowy hill or a snowy hill with a tree? I couldn't take more of the tree because it's a rather large group of trees and there's also a house.

Before I end this post I want to show you my most minimalist photo which I would rather call a wildlife photo 😉 I think that's too much minimalist:

Well, that was it, my first post in 2022 and I do hope the count of my posts will not be as minimalist as in 2021.

Information

All photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L lens.
If you are interested in the image data, I leave all EXIF and IPTC information stored in the pictures.

Well I have no idea on precisely what counts as a minimalist image but I know what I like and I love all of these although I will admit on a phone it’s hard to find the ducks

Your minimalism is growing on me, Hannes. They are all lovely and I really like the LakeWörthersee one with the red buoy. The cloud one seems to be winking.😉

It always refreshing you trying something different and we get to enjoy it.

We are having the first real snow storm of the winter. Temps still around freezing mark but they are warning to stay off the roads.

Soft photography giving a hint of what is around makes the Lake Wörthersee photograph appealing with the dash of red on the buoy.

Winter sunrise defining land from sky by touch of pink above, gentle land below and by what looks like a goose in flight in between land and sky.

Lone tree along the line most appealing in detail putting more life into the photograph, indicator of life continuing even under harsh conditions.

Wonderful photography giving a feeling of being drawn in, simple relaxing scenes.

Foggy conditions leave much to the imagination which makes photography very appealing.

Sitting watching treeline or movement slowly reveal a for a moment, then swallowed up again like a fresh drawing board, always interesting.

Oh yes, especially when I took the photos of the castle it was fun to watch the fog move and reveal and hide the castle and wait for the right moment to make the click 😀

I was lucky to not wait any longer because a minute later I couldn't see it anymore 🤣 !LOLZ

Was thinking of that castle looming in the mist, dragons taking off or wizards throwing spells down you sparking some enchantment into the land below.

House on the hill comes to mind, super safe and secure with a church up there. What a stunning place to build, able to keep an eye on everything in the valley below offering no surprises on approach.

I don't think so, but they aer certainly looking down to the people ;)
There's a museum up there and a good restaurant. You can walk up or ride on a kind of elevator. We have been there when the kids were kids, so I have no idea what has changed in the past 10 or more years.

Visiting local attractions one normally only does once maybe twice. When they charge to go up it also puts one off, which they do for everything of late.

Any case you are able to hike up and most probably get better/similar views from on high without having to pay anyone and avoid the crowds.

I have had a very short night and have come home just before, a couple of hours later than I thought.
It was a very busy day with no chance to go online.

Yep, walking up is free and you have amazing views on the way. I don't know though if anybody of my family is interested to visit the castle again, but who knows, maybe if I ask 😉

Short busy day is better than sitting around wondering what you doing there....

Ask, you may be surprised who would like to hike up with you, views must be quite good if open and able to obtain height, possibly good cloud inversion up there in winter months too.

You must have been in a minimalist frame of mind after long spell of being lockup at work.

Must have an inquiry centre open to phone in and ask, out of season already helps with not being overcrowded.

Only plans I have at the moment is to hide from the sun, try settle to do a post which so far this week has been unsuccessful!

These are just awesome Johann!! I would've never thought that there were four ducks in that photo but sure enough..they are there! I think I prefer the photo with the tree myself. I can't say for sure as these are all favorites but I especially love that Winter Sunrise! The subtle hues captured in the fog are just so pretty. I'm glad you noticed them and was able to stop and photograph it!! 💖

When I opened the images of the ducks on the computer I thought I had photographed nothing because when I took the photos they were much better to see 😁

I have taken the Winter Sunrise and the castle shot on the same morning. The fog was amazing and although I was too late for the intense colours, these pastel tones were not bad either ☺️

Those are certainly minimalist. It's not only enough to "simplify," but the image must still be engaging, and I think you've hit the nail on the head. The small, simple, minimalist nail of course. 😂

of those last two images I prefer the one with just the hill, without the tree. It is more open to imagination and interpretation.

I realise after reading your post @johannpiber that I have always loved minimalist scenes, they are beautifully simple and so pleasing to the eye, well at least to my eye. I love them all and in particular Castle Haimburg, Carinthia with its little touch of colour.

I love minimalist scenes more and more for the same reasons you have said, and I'm always looking to find nice photo motifs. The castle was a lucky find. I was there to shoot the sunrise, but I have been a bit too late for the intense pink sky. Then the fog showed me the a bit of the castle and all I had to do was to wait and click 😊

I am just a sucker for rock formation it is always hard to shoot minimalist photos only because it is hard to find isolated objects but I do always look out for them. My week has been good, busy and sunny couldn't ask for anymore 🌞

That is always the big concern with a lot of people they work there whole life time looking forward to that retirement and drop of that's why I jog and exercise every morning and try to enjoy as much as I can in between because you just never know and you will have no hope of your wife getting you up that mountain 🤣🤣

That is indeed a great picture and the band stand in the other picture is also cool.

Oh yes, that certainly could be as I thought the 4 black spots were your finger tip marks on the lens of your camera when you took the shot 🤣

We already lead a minimalist lifestyle my friend and the photos fit right in here 🤣
Nothing luxurious or extravagant and only the very basics to survive 😉

Haha, my lens is most times clean, sometimes it's fogged up and I don't notice it for a while because at the moment I'm shooting many times in foggy conditions 😄

Yeah you live it and I'm searching it, but only to take photos. We have nothing luxurious or extravagant either, but we have a lot, a lot more than we need, i have to admit.

You're very right, almost every year, we give away bags full of used clothes. We have containers where they are collected and given to people who need clothes.

Great of you guys to do that and I assure you that people in need always appreciate it.
Up north people also delivered to the Papillon building, but down here they phone and we have to go and fetch. But we don't mind as it is always for a good cause.

Btw, I want to see if this !BEER works, as I have a message that I am out of beer.
Strange as I have only distributed 2 thus far.

I think that I told you before about the things inside bags that people donate to us. Old nappies with the stuff still inside, many single shoes, underwear unwashed with holes in them, single socks and even used sanitary pads wrapped in toilet paper. Many other useless items that no one can use 😉

So you guys are doing great by donating stuff that are still in order.

Like I said, it's a good thing to have the bins and there will always be dishonest people Hannes.
But then again we must also consider the death of a person and then the relatives afterwards just scrape all of the person's belongings into bags to be donated. So there can be many reasons for people to get rid of stuff before checking first if it is durable.
