Who wouldn't love to have his own mountain? I certainly would and I have been able to call one my own ... last Saturday ... for a couple of hours 😁

Let's begin two days earlier: last week on Thursday afternoon, I have been on a hike with some colleagues up the Dobratsch mountain near Villach in Carinthia, which is my home state. It was hot and very hazy, so that the photos I made didn't turn out very well, but see yourself ...

Nevertheless it was a nice hike and foremost it motivated me to do another hike which I planned for Saturday morning. Because I haven't done much so far this year, my plan was to do a fairly easy hike in the Nock Mountains area in Carinthia: the Königstuhl mountain, which is 2,336 m / 7,664 ft high and right at the border between the 3 Austrian states Carinthia, Styria and Salzburg.

As mentioned above, it's a fairly easy hike and so the sign at the parking lot Eisentalhöhe says that it's only a 2 hour hike. Well, I needed half the time, but only because I didn't make a break on my way up because it was still pitch dark at 4 in the morning when I started the hike and I wouldn't have been able to see anything anyway 😉

In the beginning of the hike the sky was completely clear and I could see the stars, but the higher I got, the more clouds built up and when I reached the peak a thick layer of gray clouds covered the horizon where the sun was about to rise half an hour later.

Of course, I was a bit disappointed at first, but then I realized that I was up there completely alone and no other soul was to see anywhere near nor far. Once again after a while I had a mountain for me alone - no matter if my view was amazing or not so good, it was my own and that's worth more than anything else, at least to me 😀

And maybe Mother Nature has heard my thoughts because she showed me some colours and beautiful light, but she also had some fun with me by shutting off some of the colours only moments after I noticed them.
Just like she did with the pink shine behind the mountains in the photo below, that only lasted for a minute and I was lucky to take a shot before it completely disappeared. Seconds before it was higher and much more intense, but hey, I had it for me alone 😁

I changed my wet t-shirt to a dry one, had something to drink and to eat, enjoyed the silence and took some photos. It was windy, but warmer than I thought and so I had a good time wandering around the peak lokking for possible photo compositions.

A little later the sun rose behind the dark clouds and then she was above them illuminating the mountains with her warm light. Mother Nature showed me again how beautiful she is ... and it was all my own 😊

There was a little lake called "Friesenhalssee" half way to the peak and I wanted to take a few photos there before the sun was too high and harsh. So I took my gear and made my way back down.
Minutes later I heard voices further down and knew form now on I had to share the mountain, but I didn't mind because I have had a beautiful time up there on my own. I met a couple with two kids and these 4 would be the only other people I would meet during my hike.

I usually try to avoid people in my photos, but when there's glorious light I can't wait and because they are so small in the image, I didn't even need to clone them out.

Of course, when I reached the lake I had it for me alone, yay 😆
The lake is quite small and there are no spectacular mountains reflecting in it, but only two hills. If I don't forget I will come back next year in mid of June when the sun rises exactly between these two hills.

So, that was my hike on the Königstuhl mountain, and although the sunrise didn't happen as spectacular as I was hoping for, I have had a great time and could take some quite pleasing images - I hope you like them too.

On Sunday, I wanted to take another hike, another short but quite steep one. Unfortunately it rained the whole night long and so I postponed the hike to another day ... the Summer is still young.

All photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and one of these lenses: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, Canon EF 16-35mm 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 L STM, SIGMA 105mm 1:2,8 DG MACRO HSM.

Good evening my friend we’ll late night fir you as I write this

How cool you had the mountain and lake all to yourself and that Mother Nature appreciated you loving the beauty there even with dull skies and then treated you to those gorgeous colors

A two hour hike (for the average person) one for an Austrian mountain goat going up a mountain must be exhilarating

I am sure when you got home you would have been thirsty for some !WINE and hungry for !PIZZA

Good morning JJ,

getting up at 2 in the morning has some advantages 😉 and maybe the weather forecast helped me too, because they predicted thunder storms, which actually came later in the afternoon.
I didn't believe the forecast and was rewarded by some really awesome views - thank you so much that you like my photos, my friend 🤗

I've been breathing heavily like the cows along the path, but yes, it was exhilarating to be up in the mountains again and to reach the peak with such views 😀

Even fir me 2AM is an early start
I to never trust the forecast I am glad for you the thunderstorms came later

They got it wrong here also predicting storms and rain fir us last evening and we got neither even though we desperately need rain

I don't mind getting up at 2 because I usually go to bed at 8 and fall asleep not much later 😉

We have had a rainy night and it's still gray and rainy out there, but it hasn't cooled down a lot. At least the earth has got some water.

Similar to me, I go to bed generally at ( and am wide awake normally aroudn 3AM

I had hopes for rain yesterday there was a bank of thunderstorms coming through, but seems they skirted around us again didn't hear any thunder and looks like we got no rain

When I have to work I usually get up between 4:30 and 5, but when I'm free I get up when I wake u, which usually is some time between 2 and 4am.

Later in the morning it stopped to rain and the temperature climbed up to 30C again. They predict the next rain for the weekend - we'll see.

Since quite a while the weather is strange and often horrible, just like you say. We also have floods and mudslides all around, cut off villages and even valleys, but luckily the number of hurt or dead people is very low. Nature is paying us back what we are doing to her and sadly mostly the innocent suffer from it.

the rain stopped soon after my reply and the sun was hot again. At the moment the sky is dark gray from storm clouds, but I think the wind will blow the clouds away - I hope I'm wrong though 😉

Ahrg! 18C is cold, but the cold is good to wake you up and then you won't spill your food onto your shirt 😮

Those shift van certainly drain one and I have told you about my 5 years of working shifts, so all strength to you my friend. The bonus is that the extra income will push you closer to the new van 😉

The sun shines and it has 14C outside and I can tell you that not only I love it 😁 and 18C isn't able to wake me up because it's almost too warm to sleep 🤣 !LOLZ

Yep, I'm quite tired now, but I have had some (paid) sleep and think I'll go for a little walk later, maybe with my macro lens, but I'm not sure yet because my daughter has come for a visit.

Friday was just as every day and I was happy to leave work for a few free hours before my 24-hour shift would start 😅

No, she doesn't have an own car - she travels by train. I wouldn't be able to afford a car for her because her apartment and the university cost quite some money.

I didn't get out today and had a more or less lazy day at home.

Well, maybe I wrote it a little bit confusing: I went home in the afternoon after a regular work day and then I had some ours free 😂 I wished I had some !LOLZ left

The train is much cheaper - she has a ticket that allows her to travel for one year at any time with any public transportation across Austria - no costs for gas or maintenance or parking tickets and such.
To get a free ride you have to be in uniform and I don't like to be in uniform in public 😁

Hahaha, you are wise to stay inside 😉

You live in a great country where the train services work and one can get an annual ticket. Over here our entire train system was destroyed and even the heavy tracks were stolen by scrap metal collectors. The stations were also stripped and some people even built their shacks on the train lines.
My daughter in the UK said that they love the efficient train services 😉

So you don't want to appear in public in your uniform, as some old lady might hate the police and she will smash an apple pie in your face 🤣 !LOLZ

Easy by train Hannes, all that you need to do is to go and sit on the roof of the train 🤣 !LOLZ

Also over here some years ago as everything worked very well, but over time with no maintenance everything fell apart. However they are trying to revive it now and I think that it will come at a great cost to be restored. For the sake of the people I hope that they get it functioning properly again.

Here you would have a big problem if you climbed on the roof of a train, and "train surfing" has killed quite a lot of people here because of the high voltage lines above.
I was just thinking of trains in India where the roofs are full of people 😂 !LOLZ

We call them Pilchards trains, as the trains are packed with people, very tight 😉 !LOLZ

From time to time you hear in the news of hurt or died kids who wanted to impress their friends by surfing on a train.
Here you even might have to leave the train and wait for the next one if there's no place to sit, but it depends on the situation, I believe, because the subways in Vienna are packed with people 😂 !LOLZ

Friends are always a danger for kids I think. It is only natural for a kid to want to be accepted and they will go to great lengths to impress others, even it it means doing wrong the wrong things.

When a bus was packed full of people I always used to stand up to give my seat to an adult, mostly ladies, but nowadays kids don't do that anymore. I can only imagine that it is worse in Vienna when a train is full so the normal people will rather drive in their cars 🤣 !LOLZ

I would say the wrong friends are a danger and I can tell you that my son has had the wrong ones, but that's been years ago and everything is fine again. No whe has very good friends who wouldn't want him to do anything that's dangerous.

When I'm in a traffic jam in Klagenfurt I always think of the people who drive to work each day in Vienna. They would only smile about waiting 10 minutes because they spend so much more time in their cars. So most of them prefer to go by train or subway 😅 !LOLZ

Yes, I myself had bad friends in my youth and so did my son. But thankfully that stopped long ago and now both you and I know what we are talking about. I bet that many others had the same experiences.

Ugh! I hate traffic jams, as the people keep on honking when I get out to take photos with my camera.
So maybe each of those people in Vienna must get a camera as then they will smile all day 😉 !LOLZ

I wouldn't know what to photograph in Vienna, there are no waterfalls and no landscapes 😁 and I think the people have other things to do while they sit in their car and wait ... brushing teeth, shaving, makeup... 😂

Yep not all, and we work with those that will never learn. They just continue to repeat the cycles until it ends in absolute poverty. But I can tell you that poor people are happier than rich people 🤣

Easy! Take photos of the sky then you don't have to watch the antics of the people in their cars. Some even eat their breakfast in their cars 😮

Yeah, but think about the millions that don't get any help Hannes. An unemployed mom of 3 kids with no husband shared her story. She would fill a pot with water and put it on the stove in the late afternoon. The hungry kids think that she was cooking and every time that they ask when can they eat, she would take a jug with water and fill the pot, telling them that the food is not ready yet.
So she carried on until the children would fall asleep.
Just think about what that women has to go through as a parent.

I hope that it is a liquid breakfast and that you are not using a plate and a knife and fork to eat while you drive. No wonder your missus drives the car to work every day 🤣 !LOLZ

In tears it made me think how blessed we are to have clothes, food and a roof over over our heads my friend. It is always the hungry little children that gets me totally upset.

Neither do I use the spanners when I eat when I am driving. But it gets a bit difficult at the sharp corners especially when I have a meat pie in my one hand and my camera in the other hand 🤣 !LOLZ

Right, the innocent kids are the ones which make me sad, not only the hungry ones, but also the ones who have violent parents or parents who just don't care for their children.

You won't believe this. Kids at school bought some bags of popcorn from a guy that was selling it at the school fence. All of the kids got high as the guy laced the popcorn with drugs.
Like I said, we've got some real problems here.

Now that's a job that I don't like. Washing the car is the same thing over and over again and I seriously dislike repetitive jobs. So I take the car to the car-wash and they clean the car while I sit with a coffee and a newspaper 😁 !LOLZ

Sadly, this guy is a good business man because he certainly has got a few more clients that day which loved these popcorn.

My car wash takes 5 minutes only and then I let it dry while I drive home 😁 !LOLZ

Oh yes, our streets are filled by those that are hooked on the stuff.

So that's why I rather take it to the car wash. They take an hour to clean it as they know that I will inspect it when they claim to be done. At times it can even take an extra half an hour to fix all of the mistakes that I find after they said that it was done 🤣 !LOLZ

I think I haven't washed my old car more than two or three times a year, and the Golf gets a wash from my son every now and then. My new van is white and I think I'll have to wash it myself from time to time - it's already looking dirty after driving it in the rain 🤣 !LOLZ

We also have such washing services here, but I haven't used any of them before. Maybe when I have finished the camper van conversion I'll let them clean it inside and outside ... maybe 😀

Hahaha, nothing strange here as the new van must always look clean and tidy. So you will have some special cleaning cloths and will clean it almost every day for the first few months. Then the cleaning urge will start to fade to maybe once a week, then maybe once a month and ....maybe 🤣 !LOLZ

Always a good idea to try new things and we find that it works very well, as it gives Marian time to do the shopping, while I sit and wait with a mug of coffee and the newspaper at a coffee shop.
So yes, maybe you should also give it a go 😉

Well, I would rather say I will clean it about once a week at first and then after a few weeks only once per month and later only when my wife says she'd only drive with me if I clean it 🤣 !LOLZ

I might give it a try and let somebody else clean my car that I can see how to do it myself next time 😉

Hahaha, you always come up with these hilarious remarks. In that case I think that you should leave the van dirty, as then only you can drive around in it 🤣 !LOLZ

Easy as all you have to do is to buy a high pressure washer and you will have to develop two extra arms, as you will need four hands to do the drying and polishing. Then you will do it exactly the same way as them 🤣

Many people rely on the public transportation to go to work or to school, so they are always maintained very well.

I'm just not used of wearing it in public, and our old ladies all love the police ... I hope 🥺

Perhaps thank those clouds putting people off climbing the mountain, being alone is far more rewarding!

Cloud gently softens lighting altering into lovely moody photography ever changing, pink glow gives more detail than more open reflection off cloud above.

Small piece of water another with nice reflections, well worthwhile that early hour going up, good to hear two hikes accomplished second more enjoyable hearing only sounds of the mountain.

The weather forecast said the weather might be bad, but I didn't care because I wanted to do this hike anyway, and it's a toll road up there that opens at 8am and not many people know that before 8 you can enter it for free, but I have paid when I left, of course 😀 These might have been reasons why nobody else was there, although I have hiked there before with crowds everywhere.

Anyway, I have been sooo happy to have it all for me alone and nobody disturbed the peace 😁

A nice hike, I completely agree with you! The sunrise at the mountains is always my favorite. The reflection is gorgeous. Great capture! I look forward to seeing your photos of the sun that will rise exactly between the two hills. That would be very picturesque. You captured gorgeous images, Hannes, on your mountain. Mother Nature certainly opened up her beauty to you on your hike and showed you the pink shine behind the mountain.

I love that you photographed the layered look of the mountains. As I said before- like the paintings of the Group of Seven. 😊

It's a really beautiful mountain area, but because it's well known, it's also well visited. Luckily my preferred time of day is the early morning when most people prefer to sleep 😀

Hi Hannes, all I can say is that not only did you relish in the glory of aloneness on this wonderful mountain but you were able to breathe in the many varied spectacular views. It is so nice to be back to look at your beautiful photos - the ones without sun and the ones with. I might be a little strange but I loved your number 3 photo. As colourless as it was, I loved its simple and full of beauty.
