Time and the Flow of the Water

Please be aware that you will see the same waterfall multiple times in this post, but before these images and at the end of the post I will put different waterfalls, because otherwise the post might be a bit boring 😊

Time and the flow of the Water

Time and the flow of the Water
It's all about the Shutter Speed

Last Saturday, when I photographed a little waterfall in the Lepena Valley in Slovenia, I realized after the shot that somehow the ISO value of my camera had increased to a quite high value ... no wonder why the shutterspeed was so short and thus the water looked like frozen.

When I saw the result on the little screen of the camera, it really wasn't pleasing to my eyes, but then I had the idea that I could try to take the same photo with different shutter speeds to see which looks best and maybe to make a blog post, showing you the difference that shutterspeed makes when photographing waterfalls.
Some people may like the "frozen" water and some the silky or even milky water. I personally prefer it when there's still some texture in the water like in the waterfalls above and below.

But now let's carry on with the actual post and the little waterfall in the Lepena Valley I mentioned above ...

I have used my trusty RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens and a CPL filter (Circular Polarizer) to take the glare from the water. To gain the higher shutter speeds for the first few photos I have increased the ISO values.

As you can see in the images, it is the same composition in all images, as well as the same exposure value of f/14 and also the editing in Lightroom and Photoshop was exactly the same for each image.

#1 : f/14 . 1/25 sec . ISO 3200frozen water

#2 : f/14 . 1/13 sec . ISO 1600still frozen but better

The following are my preferred shutter speeds for waterfalls, which are between 0.3 and 0.6 seconds, depending on the speed of the water, of course.

#4 : f/14 . 0.3 sec . ISO 400

#5 : f/14 . 0.6 sec . ISO 200

We have now come to the lower end of my available ISO values, which is ISO 100. Because the sun hasn't completely reached this area yet, the shutter speed increased to 1.3 seconds, which is quite high in relation to the flow speed of the water, but there's still some texture to see in the water flow.

#6 : f/14 . 1.3 sec . ISO 100

To get an even slower shutter speed I have started using ND filters, which extend the exposure time. Neutral Density filters reduce the amount of light that gets through the lens and that way it extends the shutter speed. They are just like sunglasses, but for camera lenses.

#7 : f/14 . 6.0 sec . ISO 100Filter: ND 8

#8 : f/14 . 30.0 sec . ISO 100Filter: ND 64

For the last photo I have used a ND 1000 filter that extends the shutter speed 1,000 times. My phone app calculated about 22 minutes, but after 5 minutes I had enough ... you know my lack of patience 😎

#9 : f/14 . 306.0 sec . ISO 100Filter: ND 1000

As said above, some certainly like the frozen water just as well as some like the milk you can see in the last photo - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The image below is a close-up photo of the lower part of the waterfall, shot with a shutter speed of 0.5 seconds. It looks just the way I like it most.

The Gift of Time

The gift of time, God's freest boon to men,
So steadily outpoured through days and years!
Thus ever let us yield it back again
ln liberal lives and consecrate careers.

The gift of time, for which no gold is weighed,
Nor least petition offered to the Lord, -
Shall He not still by gratitude be paid,
And all our thankful days be His reward?

The gift of time, fit measure of the heart
Wherewith our Father wholly loves His own, -
Be it a symbol of our lesser part,
Just to be wholly His, and His alone!

Maybe you remember the little waterfall above, although it looks a bit different: it has grown 😄 ... the water level is lover, so the waterfall is higher, and this is "Tiny", one of my favourites in the Soča Valley.

And with the grown up Tiny I end my post for today and hope you have enjoyed seeing the same waterfall 18 times 😅

LOve all the images and I agree beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I do love the silky look of a longer exposure but I do also like when there is some texture

Nice to take the time to see effects one can obtain, was testing this a little with the moon night before last being full moon with halo above.

This is my selection, due to visual moss, rocks and water flow coming to life in #6 : f/14 . 1.3 sec . ISO 100 - Excellent photography with great information for photographers.

Once again shopping morning, caught me off guard with your post 🙃, nonetheless!

Number 4 to 6 are also my favourites here, but if the water would flow faster then number 6 would be too silky for me, I believe.

The moon is also moving, so you need quite a fast shutterspeed too, but I'm always testing that when I try to shoot this big gray ball on the sky 😉

Shopping is more important than a post with 18 times the same waterfall 😂 !LOLZ
Thank you so much kindly for your nice words, the rehive and the Tweet, dear Joan 😊

My those photographs are hard to decide on, I like the real look and feel not too smooth on the water, always have fun testing to see though never too old to learn new tricks.

With cold front going through at the moment the skies have been entertaining, started the day with a thunder storm an hour later bright clear skies and sunshine, cool weather cheers me up!

Shopping has to be done, cook in home knows prices, best cuts to use at this time of year enjoying ox-tail soup or curry, flavours for the soul to sing.

!WINEX of course after good meal... have an amazing day!

Hi Joan,

I'm sorry for this very late reply from me, but I have been on the road all day long yesterday and also today. Yesterday I brought some things to my daughter's new apartment, today I have had other things to do and later we go shopping for things our daughter needs and tomorrow my wife and I will drive to her again - 400 km one way 😅

At the moment I am at home trying to catch up with notifications here and on Twitter as well, but I think that much will have to wait till Sunday or even Monday.

It's always fun to test new things with the camera and many times I am positively surprised 😀

Yesterday there were thunder and hail storms all over Austria, but on my drive of 800 km I have had only once a little bit of rain. Today is nice and the next days are going to be hot 😅

Wishing you a fabulous weekend ☺️🌞

Children take time to settle, parents support never ends even when travel is long. Safe travel with beautiful views to carry you through at least.

Will wait to hear how things all went once you settled back a home once again, the testing of what effects are on offer using modern equipment is amazing, so much to learn.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Always wonderful waterfall photos, Hannes. I like the silky look of the waterfalls. Love the look you created of the Boka Waterfall, Slovenia. It looks like a magnificent head of hair of a goddess.

Lovely poem dear Hannes but I’m finding the ‘gift of time’ is going too fast. 😊

Great shot of last one, the tiny waterfall. 💕

I hope your week is going pleasantly. Have a great Thor’s Day. 🔨 🤗

Hi Jo,

I say thank you so much for your lovely compliment and for everything right in the beginning, so I can't forget it later ☺️

Thor's Day was a holiday here and I have taken today off work - loong weekend 😁
But we are quite busy delivering things to our daughter's new apartment that is 400 km away, so I think that I will go happily back to work on Monday, because the stress will be over 🤣

At least the weather is nice, almost too hot, but that's better than thunder and hail storms like we had yesterday ... thunder storms on Thor's Day 😎

Wishing you a fabulous weekend, dear Jo 🤗🌞

I love waterfalls and the silky effect that we can do with cameras :D Lovely shots!

Different shots, different mood. Right now, I'm liking the Tiny one the most :D :D I like the bluish half. It's like the water is falling and disappearing into space.
