Wildlife Photography : Experiences - Successes

avatar

Today I want to talk a little bit about my experiences in Wildlife Photography.

Wildlife Photography : Experiences - Successes

Wildlife Photography
Experiences - Successes

Well, this story could be over after the next sentences because I have no real experiences in Wildlife Photography ;)

Sometimes I take my long telephoto lens or the macro with me with the intention of taking spectacular photos of wild animals or tiny insects in my area, but the sweet Lady Patience never comes with me. She prefers to wait at home 😉 So I go for a walk and I look for animals, but I can't wait any longer than a couple of minutes on one place and then I move on, of course without seeing any animals.

Most animals I see when I'm on my way towards the area where I want to take the photos: deer and foxes crossing the road, rabbits racing my car, birds of prey sitting in trees or flying above me, and many more. Most of these animals are long gone until I find a place to safely and legally (Zac 😉) stop the car or my motorbike. Some of them even wait till I roll my window down.

But sometimes I am lucky ... somehow.

About two weeks ago, I was on a ride on my motorbike when I saw two Birds of Prey in the cloudless blue sky and I found a place to park the bike almost immediately. My good luck was that I have had the telephoto lens on my camera and my bad luck was that until I was ready to take photos, they have flown much higher up, almost too high even for the 400mm lens.
The dark bird is a Red Kite and the lighter one must be a kind of Buzzard or a Hawk .. I have no idea about birds, but I am sure there's someone who can identify it ;)

Last weekend I wanted to photograph the sunset from a mountain near where I live. The sunset wasn't very spectacular in the beginning, but when I turned around I saw 2 Roe Deer having grass dinner behind me. The male deer (roebuck) must have been in high grass or bushes before because there was still some grass or leaves on his antlers.

Deer having Grass Dinner

After taking a few photos of the deer I turned around again and saw the sun setting behind dark clouds - the sun was a fire ball and the edges of the clouds were glowing. It looked somehow amazing but after a minute it was over.

On to the next: yesterday morning I was on a morning walk at the reservoir nearby when I saw a kind of Robberfly on a Flower. I quickly grabbed my camera and wanted to take a macro photo of it, but no wonder, the fly was gone.
Fortunately, right behind the flower there was a leaf and on the leaf I saw a Red Bug. It looked even better than the robber fly and it didn't move.

Red Bug or Beetle
click for fullsize

As many times with insects, I have no clue what bug or beetle this is - although I have found a few similar looking beetles, but none looked exactly like this one.

Last but not least: yesterday morning I had a coffee on our balcony when I noticed a movement in the tree a couple of meters away. Since I was curious what it could be, I put my telephoto lens on the camera and had a look: a Dove was cleaning herself - nice 😊

A Dove in the Tree

So now, we are at the end of my post and before you tell me I will tell you what I think about my Wildlife Photograpy: whenever I get reasonable sharp photos of wildlife, it's all pure luck ... luck to have a telephoto or a macro lens on the camera and luck to see an animal or even an insect when I'm prepared for it. I better stick with my landscape and waterfall photos because they don't move away 😁

Information

All photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and one of these lenses: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS II USM, Canon EF 16-35mm 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 L STM, SIGMA 105mm 1:2,8 DG MACRO HSM, Sigma 100-400mm F5-6,3 DG OS HSM C.
If you are interested in the image data, I leave all EXIF and IPTC information stored in the pictures.

Your photography is always superb, whether a beetle or mountain goat each has some enduring quality to allow one to linger and enjoy!

Keep outdoors, sit quietly nature always visits Johann....

Thank you so much kindly, Joan, for curating and for your nice words ☺️

Sometimes All times I'm lucky, because being outdoors is one thing I love, but sitting quietly is not my thing, even if I know that nature will come to visit me. But I'm getting better the older I get ☺️

Hahaha, you must have heard my laughter - I can't have too many lenses with me. When I have my backpack there are always 3 lenses in it and some other stuff. But in the past months I am trying to take only a smaller bag with me, especially on themotorbike. In this bag I have only enough space for the camera and one lens 😀

True, I'm not as agile as I was years ago and I like to sit down and rest more often, but I still can't wait longer than a few minutes ... maybe in another few years 😉

Too much equipment would require a security guard here to travel with you, so stick to my guns with the small pocket faithful which goes everywhere with me... except shops which I don't find attractive at all!

Keep going for as long as one is comfortable and able, too soon you sit too long and the moss covers you... 🙂

It's better here, but leaving the backpack somewhere alone would neither be a good idea, and I find shops unattractive anyway. Just go in one if I really need something which my wife can't buy 😉

Oh yes, I can imagine myself on a bench somewhere on a hill or at a forest, watching nature and waiting for something I have forgotten what it was 🤣

Learning the art of sitting/walking quietly will surprise you how much is hiding in the bush waiting to come out the moment you gone.

But then even on the move you constantly create amazing photography with or without that big backpack.

Walking quietly is easy, I do that all the time, but I'm no hunter, so I'm still too loud 🤣
Thank you so much kindly, Joan, I hope you have a nice Winter evening 🌞

Beautiful captures Hannes of the animals and the sunset. You are quite the wildlife photographer when the moment arises. Awesome closeup of the deer. Love the dove with the wing and little head showing.

I’ve been sad the last few days as Sunday Cat passed away. He was laying around, not eating and passed suddenly. Always a terrible shock to lose a beloved pet. Red seems lost and lonesome too.

Have a great week dear Hannes.🌺

Thank you so much, Jo, for the nice compliments as well as for the goodies you have sent 🤗

You have no idea how many opportunities I have missed before, but I am willing to practice patience more and I have become better already ;)

Oh, I feel so sorry for you, my dear. You know we have lost our cat last year and still I miss him often, although the two new ones are around. I can imagine that Red feels lonely and I can imagine your feelings. If human or pet, loosing a family member is hard and sad.

You have a great week too, dear Jo 🤗

Hello Johann,
Streams and waterfalls are easier to photograph. The don't run all over the place. 😊
How naughty of the animals, testing your patience like that. Still, you didn't come home empty handed. And the ones that you managed to photograph were all good - as usual. I like the sunset, and the beetle the most.

Hi Vincent,

Excellent "wildlife photography"! All birds and animals are cute and beautiful. I especially love the two birds with the bright blue sky in the background.

The sunset is amazing. It looks like a "fire ball" indeed. Great capture!

For me, I found it difficult to take photos of the birds or insects as they move so fast. I would prefer to take photos of landscapes, too, for the same reason as you, "they don't move".... Haha! ;D

Anyway, you did great job on the photography of these wild animals. ;)

Haha, I would say "lucky shots", but thank you so much, my friend 🤗

The two birds have been half as high when I spotted them, but a minute later they were much higher up and then they were gone ;)
It's all a matter of practicing and patience, but I'm too lazy to practice and too active to wait patiently 🤣

Thanks a lot again, @tangmo, have a wonderful week 🌞

Oh my gosh @johannpiber I'm so glad that I am not the only one who can't get ongoing good photos of animals. I just don't cut it very well at all. We have doves in our yard all the time and I think they are beautiful animals, peaceful and loving. You would think that I would a coffee table 'Dove Picture Book' but no I do not. When I walked to the clothes line yesterday morning a pretty dove was so close to me and still sitting on the feeder rather than flying away. But, I did not have my camera!!
You have my vote as a fabulous photographer💜

We have more pigeons than doves here, but since a few months some doves fly by more often and take a break in the trees between our apartment houses or search for food in the grass.
I like them a lot too, but I have to admit, that this was my first dove photo. Usually I don't like to take photos from the balcony, because although I would photograph only the birds around (which always hide when they see my camera), some neighbors might think I want to look at something else when they see the long telephoto lens pointing towards their house 🤣

Wildlife photography is a special genre that you must love, but I can't sit still and do nothing for longer than a few minutes, so I try to take such photos whenever I'm lucky to see and quick enough to take 😉

The doves seem to be used of you - you could make them used of the camera too and take dove portraits, it doesn't have to be a book though 😁

Thank you so much kindly, @angiemitchell, I wish you a wonderful day, or better said evening 🌞

I agree @johann about the patience to take animal photos. I have to laugh because I got the best photo of 2 doves nesting in one of our hedges. They could not go anywhere while I snapped away. Doves are incredibly lightly flying away at the sightless sound.
I managed to see your photos tonight - they were not available last night for some reason. You did very well, they are great.
