The Birth of Examinations: How a "Strange" Invention Shaped Human History

Before any state of being or situation existed, it had an origin it began from, thereby creating an elaborate variety of human history. Also, every aspect of our existence, from the simple to the exceptional, has some historical roots. Likewise, one of the weirdest occurrences called “examination” can be traced back to when it began – which is through the invention of Henry Fischel.

Oftentimes, I reflect on why one would think of inventing “examination,” out of all other discoveries; Henry Fischel, a name not often spoken of as the great inventor of history happens to have made a significant impact on human civilization. A man who birthed what many consider to be the strangest creation known to humanity – the examination.

Examination, which is seen to be a ritualized process of assessment and evaluation has affected almost every area of modern life. It is what people commonly use to grade someone's promotion to another level; this happens in many aspects of life such as in academic settings, professional certifications, and even medical diagnoses or legal trials; though it tends to shape the course of individuals' lives and societies as a whole. Yet, despite its prevalence, it is an uncomfortable and tense experience for many people.

Quick Question?

In this modern life, are we in line with the vision the founder, Henry Fischel had about “examination”? originally, he intended to serve as a tool for identifying talent, promoting meritocracy, and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources.

However, examination in this new age is not befitting its original purpose, this is why we lack professionals in many fields of occupation; they either dupe or bribe to get to the next level – which is not the purpose of it.

To understand the significance of the examination, one must delve into its origins and see its original purpose before jumping into doing the opposite.

Do you know?

The examination, in practice, has caused a lot of controversy, inequity, and trauma. For many individuals, the experience of undergoing an examination is filled with anxiety, stress, and pressure. For instance, I can remember when I fell sick because I was to write an examination the next morning.

Furthermore, examinations have been accused of encouraging memorizing information over critical thinking, limiting creativity and originality in the process. The emphasis on standardized testing has been especially problematic, as it tends to benefit those from privileged backgrounds while promoting inequality in society.

My story

Just like in college, I‘d got friends who could read for 30 minutes and understand everything, meanwhile, I read for an hour and I am yet to understand three pages of the book.

Despite these concerns, the examination remains an essential aspect of contemporary society, with significant roots in our educational, professional, and social institutions.

Finally, as we continue to explore the challenges of the modern world, it is essential to reflect on the origins and implications of examination. By understanding the historical context and acknowledging the shortcomings of current practices, we can strive towards creating more equitable and effective means of assessment and evaluation.
