The Paradox of Family: Adversity and Unwavering Love

One fateful day I got angry with my elder brother who traveled out for academic purposes and stayed for months without checking up on us (the siblings). In his response to my complaint regarding this behavior, he said, "Families are meant for a moment of the adversary," I got stuck. What did he mean in that statement?

While growing up I saw several answers to this lingering question in my mind; though it may not be applicable in some homes my background - the way I was brought up made me understand this. One of the distinct values in my family is "LOVE." Certainly, I know most families love themselves but ours seem to be unique. Irrespective of how long I haven't reached out to my brother, if he calls me now for help I respond immediately as one whom I've been in touch with frequently. My parents made us understand that we shouldn't joke with "FAMILY" because that is where one can run back to when everyone turns his/her back on the person.

However, relationships vary in different homes; mine may sound impossible in some homes, meanwhile, we love the way we relate and cherish each moment. So, it is best to stay in the mode of relationship that best fits your home, otherwise, you'll ruin your connection amongst your family members. Yay! People do covet the way others run their homes maybe because their definition of love seems to be strange. One way to build a new mode of relating with your family members is by sharing your new definition of love with a new generation - children, grandchildren, etc. because they're easily teachable and adaptable to embrace the new change.

For any ruined home who wishes to have an enjoyable relationship with his family members, teach the new generation what they have to learn about love, do not transfer your pains to them. Let them have a good perspective of a happy home instead of building on what existed.

My brother's statement may not have provided a definitive answer, but it sparked a journey of self-discovery. I understand now that families while facing moments of adversity, are built on a foundation of unwavering love. This love allows us to overcome disagreements and face challenges together, creating a unique and enduring bond.

Here is my post for today's March Monthly Prompt.
