When I entered the Madre Teresa de Calcuta Cemetery Garden on my most recent visit, right next to the Convent of St. Francis of Assisi in Old Havana, I did not expect the Greek Orthodox church inside to have its doors open.

I had visited this garden twice before and had never been lucky enough to visit the interior of the church. But this time, I choose to believe that Saint Nicholas of Myra, the saint after whom the temple is named, heard my wish. Because as soon as I crossed the iron gate of the garden, I could see the wooden doors of the cathedral wide open in the distance, as if waiting for me.

This church has been here for over twenty years, and the number of worshippers and visitors has grown over time. From the outside, it looks simple, a small building carved out of stone with a red-tiled roof. I have always liked it because of its location in this peaceful garden.

This building stands almost at the end of the central path that runs through the garden, and it seems to blend in with the natural surroundings as if it had always been there. But the most remarkable and beautiful thing is inside, in the decoration that completely captured my attention.

The most abundant material in its interior decoration is wood, with an astonishing level of detail in the ornamental motifs and carvings. The columns, doors, windows, and furniture are elaborately carved with reliefs that tell stories, which I found truly impressive. The most striking feature is a large wooden screen on the back wall, where the relief decorations depict sacred scenes with a precision I had never seen before. It is a marvelous piece of craftsmanship that deserves to be contemplated and admired in all its details.

Although the interior is small, it looks grand and majestic. Under the dome, the ceiling is decorated with colourful paintings of saints and sacred passages. And from above hangs an imposing chandelier that adds to the majesty of the place.

Everything is illuminated by natural light streaming in through the windows, and this brightness highlights the neatness and peaceful atmosphere that permeates the space. The upper part of the white walls is decorated with brightly coloured paintings, and every detail seems designed to inspire admiration.

This church is also a symbol of the great religious diversity that exists in Cuba, where every faith is respected and different spiritual traditions coexist in harmony. It is also an architectural gem that connects the traditions of distant lands such as Greece with the Cuban people.

I hope this little story inspires others to visit this beautiful garden and be amazed by all the sacred things found here.

Cuando entré al Jardín Camposanto Madre Teresa de Calcuta, en mi visita más reciente, justo al lado del Convento de San Francisco de Asís, en La Habana Vieja, no esperaba que la iglesia Ortodoxa Griega que se encuentra en su interior tuviera sus puertas abiertas.

Había visitado este jardín en dos ocasiones anteriores y nunca tuve la suerte de poder visitar el interior de la iglesia. Pero esta vez elijo creer que San Nicolás de Mira, santo que da nombre al templo, escuchó mi deseo. Porque apenas crucé el portón de hierro del jardín pude ver a lo lejos las puertas de madera de la catedral abiertas de par en par, como si me esperaran.

Esta iglesia lleva más de veinte años en este sitio y el número de fieles y visitantes ha ido creciendo con el tiempo. Desde fuera luce sencilla, es una edificación pequeña como tallada en piedra, con un techo de tejas rojas. Siempre me ha gustado por la posición que ocupa dentro de este jardín tan apacible.

Esta edificación se levanta casi al final del sendero central que atraviesa el jardín, y parece fundirse con el entorno natural como si siempre hubiera estado allí. Pero lo más notable y hermoso se encuentra en su interior, en el decorado que capturó mi atención completamente.

Lo que más abunda en su decorado interior es la madera, con un nivel de detalle en los motivos ornamentales y labrados asombroso. Las columnas, puertas, ventanas y mobiliario están elaborados con magníficos tallados llenos de relieves que narran historias, lo que me me dejo muy admirada. Lo más impresionante es una gran mampara de madera que hay en la pared del fondo donde las decoraciones en relieve cuentan escenas sagradas con una precisión que nunca había visto. Es un trabajo artesanal maravilloso que merece ser contemplado y admirado en todos sus detalles.

Aunque el interior es pequeño, luce grandioso y majestuoso. Bajo la cúpula, el techo está decorado con pinturas coloridas de santos y pasajes sagrados. Y desde lo alto cuelga una imponente lámpara candelabro que le aporta más majestuosidad al lugar.

Todo está iluminado por la luz natural que entra por los ventanales, y esa claridad resalta la pulcritud y el ambiente de paz que se respira. Las paredes blancas están decoradas en su parte superior con pinturas de vivos colores y cada detalle parece pensado para despertar admiración.

Esta iglesia es además símbolo de la gran diversidad religiosa que existe en Cuba, donde se respeta cada fe y se convive en armonía con las distintas tradiciones espirituales. Es también una joya arquitectónica que conecta la tradición de tierras lejanas como Grecia con el pueblo cubano.

Espero que este pequeño relato inspire a otros a visitar este precioso jardín y dejarse sorprender por todo lo sagrado, que aquí se encuentra.
