I remember that in another time, not very distant, I used to walk a lot through this space where the Bus Terminal of the Municipality Playa is located, in the capital of Cuba. Although it sounds more realistic if I say “old terminal” (or station), because the reality is that what is least seen passing thro deugh this place is a bus, or “guagua,” as we say in Cuba. The energy crisis that the country is going through has made public transportation, which has always been scarce, almost nonexistent.

Even so, this place has not stopped fulfilling its function, and it maintains the official stops from where one can go to several municipalities of Havana, although the most used means of transport for this are the electric tricycles, which have become the solution and salvation of the majority of Cubans who need to move. Taking a private taxi is also an option, but with the high prices of the fare it is the least accessible alternative for most.

I also remember that this was a site practically destined for the entrance and exit of buses, and there were only a few shops or street vendors offering some light food. The rush did not allow stopping for long, and almost always there appeared some cart of shaved ice or a vendor of cones with peanuts. Over the years, however, the street vendors have increased a lot, and each doorway of the houses in the surroundings has turned into small shops or cafeterias. Currently we can find a great diversity of foods and articles of all kinds, and the site looks more like a commercial fair than a bus terminal, although everyone still calls it El Paradero de Playa.

The Terminal is also known for being very close to Fifth Avenue, one of the most emblematic and busy roads of the city. Right here ends one of the roundabouts of the avenue, the one that has in its center the sculpture in homage to one of the heroes of the struggles for the freedom of Cuba: the Monument to Calixto García. A very striking memorial and reference site.

Although the Terminal no longer fulfills as before its original function, it continues to be a very well-known point, always full of people and a reflection of how Cubans reinvent each space so that it continues to have life and adapts to the needs of the moment.

Recuerdo que en otro tiempo, no muy lejano, solía recorrer mucho este espacio donde se encuentra el Paradero de Ómnibus del Municipio Playa, en la capital de Cuba. Aunque suena más realista si digo “antiguo paradero” (o terminal), porque la realidad es que lo que menos se ve transitar por este lugar es un ómnibus, o guagua, como decimos en Cuba. La crisis energética por la que atraviesa el país ha hecho que el transporte público, el que siempre ha sido escaso, sea casi inexistente.

Aun así este lugar no ha dejado de cumplir con su función, y mantiene las paradas oficiales desde donde se puede ir hacia varios municipios de La Habana, aunque el medio de transporte mas usado para ello sean los triciclos eléctricos, los que se han convertido en la solución y salvación de la mayoría de los cubanos que necesitan trasladarse. Tomar un taxi particular es tambien una opción, pero con los altos precios del pasaje es la alternativa menos accesible para la mayoría.

Recuerdo también que este era un sitio prácticamente destinado a la entrada y salida de ómnibus, y solo existian unos pocos comercios o vendedores ambulantes ofreciendo algún alimento ligero. Las prisas no permitían detenerse mucho tiempo, y casi siempre aparecía algún carrito de granizado o un vendedor de cucuruchos con maní. Con los años, sin embargo, los vendedores ambulantes han aumentado muchísimo, y cada portal de las casas de los alrededores se ha convertido en pequeñas tiendas o cafeterías. Actualmente podemos encontrar una gran diversidad de alimentos y articulos de todo tipo, y el sitio parece más una feria comercial que un paradero de ómnibus, aunque todos lo siguen llamando El Paradero de Playa.

El Paradero es también conocido por encontrarse muy próximo a la Quinta Avenida, una de las vías más emblemáticas y transitadas de la ciudad. Justamente aquí desemboca una de las rotondas de la avenida, la que tiene en su centro la escultura homenaje a uno de los héroes de las luchas por la libertad de Cuba: el Monumento a Calixto García. Un memorial muy vistoso y sitio de referencia.

Aunque el Paradero ya no cumple como antes con su función original sigue siendo un punto muy conocido y siempre lleno de personas y un reflejo de cómo los cubanos reinventamos cada espacio para que siga teniendo vida para que se adapte a las necesidades del momento.
