The Church of Paula, a Walk into the Past [EN/ES]

English Version

In a small area such as Old Havana, one of the oldest in the Cuban capital and where the first village was founded, it is quite notable the number of churches and convents that are found in it. That is why it is not surprising that when walking through its surroundings we quite frequently come across some of these religious temples.

In the first centuries after the founding of the city, the Church played an important role regarding the power it exercised in the colony, in addition to the deep religiosity that always characterized the Cuban population, one of the reasons why they were built. Although currently some of these buildings serve different social and cultural functions, most still preserve their religious character and are recognized and visited even by people coming from other countries.

In this publication today I want to show one of those churches that, like many others, has survived the passage of time and is part of the heritage and the historical and cultural legacy of the city. I am referring to the Church of San Francisco de Paula.

I am sure that most of those who have walked along the Alameda de Paula, a seaside promenade much visited and known by all Habaneros since it offers one of the most beautiful views of the sea facing the city, have reached the place where the church is located, which is situated right at the end of this promenade, as the culminating point of the walk.

Although this temple no longer fulfills religious functions and nowadays is a space used as a concert hall for ancient music, it still maintains its original structure and is a reference of colonial architecture from another era. This is a building that does not go unnoticed, so I took some time to walk around it and stop to enjoy its grand construction.

The first thing that stands out in the distance when we glimpse this great stone structure is its imposing dome, and as we get closer we begin to discover details that leave no doubt that we are before a unique temple. An old bronze bell, a large wooden door plated with metal, and beautiful stained glass windows that even from the outside reveal their beauty.

We also find in the large square that surrounds the church a small sculpture that draws attention because of its bearing and because it might seem out of place in this site. It is the sculpture of Enriqueta Favez, the first woman who practiced medicine in Cuba, and who defied the norms imposed by the society of the time in which she lived.

As we delve into the history of the Church of Paula, as it is known, we understand that this statue is also a tribute to courage and dignity. Next to the church, for a time, there existed a hospital that welcomed poor women of scarce resources and was also the place where for the first time women carried out the dedicated work of nursing.

Today, this church, like many others, is testimony of an era that still endures for the delight of all those who stop to admire this jewel of the past.

The buildings are very solid and beautiful too.

In the time past, quality materials were used for building castle like solid edifices. Such buildings does not even need the stress of paintings and they last longer.

This church carries so much about your history. It's so wonderful to note also that it contributes so much to the efforts of women back then to be respected and be recognized to have the capability to contribute to the society. Long live the women! This architecture is one great piece that withstands not just time but the timeless story of it's origin and history.
