In this writing I am going to share with you part of the history and significance of one of these sites.

The Cristobal Colon Cemetery, a space in the City of Havana, has been the final resting place over the years of many Cubans and figures of interest that have been part of our culture and history.

Cemeteries are not only the place where the remains of those who are no longer with us rest, but it is also where the living go in search of comfort and where they can feel closer to their loved ones.

The necropolis of Cristobal Colon named in honor of the discoverer of Cuba, is an outdoor site, full of light, with large green gardens and well maintained so it is not a gloomy place, but quite the opposite. Where the white color of buildings and tombs, gives us a feeling of calm and serenity.
Outside there is life, the bustle of the streets, people in constant movement. But inside, it is as if crossing the threshold to a different place, full of peace, silence and tranquility.

It is located at the intersection of Zapata and 12th Streets, in the town of Vedado, Havana and is the largest cemetery in the capital of Cuba.

Its construction was completed in November 1886 and took fifteen years to materialize. Its architect was the Spaniard Calixto de Loira y Cardoso. And its architectural style is Romantic-Byzantine.

The main entrance is of an imposing beauty. The gate through which funeral processions and visitors pass can be seen from a distance due to its large size and is the first thing we see as we approach the place. It is designed in the form of a large semicircular arch, full of reliefs and different symbols, and has a huge iron grille that opens to two leaves, and are those that allow access to the place.
At its top there are three marble sculptures representing Faith, Hope and Charity.

It has two large avenues that cross it, some of the images that I show here are in these main avenues. These streets cross in the center forming a cross. And in the middle of this cross is its chapel.

The church can be seen from the main entrance and the first thing that catches the eye is its striking yellow color, yellow is the vital force of the sun, the strength of God and the joy of celebrating his presence. It has an octagonal shape and its roof is crowned by a red dome.

Here the final ceremony takes place so that the souls are in peace and where the priest in the company of family and friends reads the psalms and dedicates a prayer to the deceased.

Under the arches of the main entrance there is a large statue of Jesus Christ crucified.

In the necropolis there are dissimilar mausoleums, pantheons and vaults with beautiful images of religious attributes and elaborate sculptures of angels, made of materials as durable and beautiful as white marble and granite.

In the interior of its walls rest in sepulchers and pantheons the remains of several important figures of our country, some of them are:

-The Pantheon of Máximo Gómez Báez, a battle-hardened General and excellent military strategist of the Wars of Independence of colonial Cuba against the Spanish government.

-The Pantheon of the parents of José Martí Pérez, Cuba's national hero, a highly respected and beloved figure by all the Cuban people, and one of the most important men of our wars of independence.

-The Firemen's Pantheon. In honor of a group of brave firefighters who gave their lives in an explosion trying to put out a fire, which was dedicated to them by the people of the capital.
This is the largest monument in the cemetery and is very visited for its beauty and its emotional content.

-The Pantheon to the veterans of our independence wars. Where homage is paid to all those who fought for the independence of colonial Cuba. Elaborated mainly in stone and metal.

There are also the tombs and buildings dedicated to the members of some of the associations that existed in Cuba, such as the Asturian and Masonic.

As curiosities I share some stories of those who are buried here, stories that all Cubans know for having transcended in time:

-There are two very unique tombs, one is that of the architect José F. Mata, made of stones and resembling the ancient pyramids of Egypt, of which he was a fervent admirer. The other is the Pantheon in black granite of the Falla Bonet family, the second with this peculiar shape.

-The Tomb of the Miraculous, where Amelia Goyri was buried, is the most visited tomb. The parents
Parents go to her to ask her to grant them the miracle of healing for their children, and when leaving the tomb they should not turn their backs on her.

-The Tomb of Eugenio Casimiro Rodriguez, the only man buried standing, by express will of the deceased and who said that powerful men always have to have their heads upright.

-There is even a tomb dedicated to love where the remains of two eternal lovers are buried, Margarita Pacheco and Modesto Canto, who upon the death of his beloved kept visiting her tomb for 20 years and dedicated a melody to her with his violin.

Our necropolis of Colon keeps part of our culture, history and heritage, due to this and together with its architectural and sculptural value of its monuments, it was declared a National Monument in 1987.

The cemetery has been given special care for some time by the Havana historian's office, since it was once poorly cared for and deteriorated.

I loved the walk. I used to go to the cemetery to take photos, but since the Covid-19 arrived I've gone home like a snail. I have to gradually resume my walks. Congratulations for this magnificent publication. 🐝

Hello, life and death, with one begins and with the other ends the cycle of life. Death captivates me, it is something I cannot avoid.

The pantheons and mausoleums are majestic. The gardens have a singular charm, as silent as the people who inhabit them.

The man who decided to be buried standing up has caught my attention. I don't know if I would like to be buried standing up, I don't know if I would like to be buried, maybe my ashes in the sea. What do you think, would you like to be buried standing up?

If one day you have the opportunity to visit it, you will be fascinated.
I have never thought about how I would like to be buried. Unlike you I am not attracted to anything to do with death. But the place is so beautiful that it deserves to be written about.
I think I would prefer to have my body cremated and my ashes scattered somewhere of my choice.
Thank you for your comment! ❤️

The truth is that I was super delighted with the number of different structures that make up funeral mausoleums, among my favorites would be the pyramids such as the one belonging to the Falla Bonet family where the structure speaks for itself of the ingenuity of the family and not of the sad feelings of death. A great publication

Thank you very much. Actually there are many more sculptures and other tombs of important people. It would be necessary to make a second publication.
I am glad you liked it.

The necropolis of Colon is an emblematic place in Havana. It is one of the National Monuments of our country, and the beauty of the place more than attracting people away, attracts them to better contemplate some really exquisite works such as the Monument to the Firemen and other works of renowned Cuban artists such as Rita Longa, with her work called La Piedad, located in the pantheon of the Aguilera Family.
Great Job!
