The Old Sarrá Pharmacy [EN/ES]

English Version

In the Historic Centre of Old Havana, on Teniente Rey Street, we can visit a singular museum, it is the former Sarrá Drugstore, a pharmacy, or apothecary as it was also once called, currently intended to show the history of pharmacies in Havana.

Like many other sites of heritage interest, it was restored by the Office of the Historian of Havana with the purpose of preserving its legacy and showing the evolution of pharmaceutical science in Cuba. For this reason, nowadays it houses the Museum of the Pharmacy of Havana.

Among its display cases, porcelain jars rescued from archaeological excavations carried out in old dwellings of the city are exhibited, through which it has been possible to learn about the medicines that were used in earlier times. In many of these jars, the labels were preserved, and even the details of where they were sold and the place from which they came.

In the museum rooms, utensils and tools used in the preparation of medicines are also shown, microscopes, weights, scales, jars and other instruments that narrate the history of Cuban pharmacy. All of this is accompanied by informational posters that reproduce old advertisements of the products that were sold there.

The most astonishing thing about this old pharmacy is that it is preserved with all its original furniture: wide wooden counters, tall and elegant glass cabinets, a marble floor that still shines, and a decorated ceiling from which elegant lamps hang. I also enjoyed a set of stained-glass windows with a combination of colours that fascinated me.

Every corner is arranged so that the visitor feels time has not passed. Everything is maintained with the intention of preserving and, at the same time, educating those who cross its doors.

But the Sarrá Pharmacy is not limited only to the exhibition. In one of its rooms, products made with natural medicine are sold, thus maintaining the practical use the apothecary had during its years of operation.

For me, visiting the old pharmacy is not only to be amazed by its display cabinets. It is to contemplate once again another living chapter of Havana’s history.

I hope you have enjoyed the tour.

Cheers and until next time!
