Walking under the summer sun is very exhausting. During the daytime hours in this season I always try to stay at home. June is one of the hottest months and in the summer of Cuba each year the heat is felt more. However, this beginning of summer has been an exception since it has been a very rainy month. The rains in this month are not unusual but since the first days of June they have been almost constant and torrential in some areas, which has helped the environment feel fresher and more welcoming.

That is why in this outing that I made for a necessary errand, I did not feel that suffocating heat that usually exists in this summer season. Even so, I decided to go out early because in the afternoons and at midday it already begins to get cloudy and to rain heavily.

I find myself walking in the Municipality of Playa, and I begin this route from the Bus Station, where I arrived in an electric tricycle-type bicitaxi, which are the ones most abundant at this time in the city. At present in Cuba fuel has become a rather scarce resource, and for that reason there are not usually many people on the street either. Automobiles have decreased quite a lot and urban transport is almost nonexistent. That is why walking has become an almost obligatory option, and for me in particular it does not bother me since it serves me to exercise and at the same time to have a time of personal reflection while I observe the daily life of the city.

What I liked most about this place is a church that I have always seen closed. I do not know if it is shut down but the few times I have walked around here I always find it the same. From outside it looks like a simple church, and the bell tower that can be seen from a distance draws attention, I think it is the most outstanding point of the surroundings because it can be seen from several places. When taking a close photo I realize that it is a little abandoned, so I imagine that the church is closed for the same reason.

In this neighborhood vegetation abounds, which at this time is exuberant and full of greenery. The large trees that are found on the sidewalks provide a shade that is much appreciated, especially when the sun manages to come out from among the clouds. And it is precisely this mixture of freshness, silence and nature that turns the walk into a pleasant experience. In addition to the church and the vegetation, I liked the tranquility of the neighborhood, not many cars are heard nor the typical bustle of other more central areas.

This walk besides being productive since I was able to carry out my errand, also served me to realize that even in the midst of daily difficulties there are always spaces to enjoy the peace and beauty of the surroundings. And that without a doubt is what is worth sharing here.

Caminar bajo el sol del verano es muy agotador. En el horario del día en esta época siempre trato de estar en casa. Junio es uno de los meses más calurosos y en el verano de Cuba cada año se siente más calor. Sin embargo, este inicio de verano ha sido una excepción ya que ha sido un mes muy lluvioso. Las lluvias en este mes no son inusuales pero desde que los primeros dias de Junio han sido casi constantes y torrenciales en algunas zonas, lo que ha ayudado a que el ambiente se sienta más fresco y acogedor.

Es por eso que en esta salida que realicé para una gestión necesaria, no sentí ese calor sofocante que suele haber en esta época de verano. Aun así, decidí salir temprano porque en las tardes y al mediodía ya comienza a nublarse y a llover con fuerza.

Me encuentro caminando en el Municipio Playa, y comienzo este recorrido desde el Paradero de ómnibus, a donde llegue en un bicitaxi tipo triciclo eléctrico, que son los que mas abundan en este tiempo en la ciudad. En la actualidad de Cuba el combustible se ha convertido en un recurso bastante escaso, y por esa razón tampoco suelen haber muchas personas en la calle. Los automóviles han disminuido bastante y el transporte urbano es casi inexistente. Es por eso que caminar se ha convertido en una opción casi obligada, y a mí en lo particular no me molesta ya que me sirve para ejercitarme y de paso tener un tiempo de reflexión personal mientras observo la vida cotidiana de la ciudad.

Lo que más me gustó de este lugar es una iglesia que siempre he visto cerrada. No sé si está clausurada pero las pocas veces que he caminado por aquí siempre la encuentro igual. Desde fuera parece una iglesia sencilla, y llama la atención la torre campanario que se ve desde la distancia, creo que es el punto más sobresaliente de los alrededores porque se ve desde varios lugares. Al tomarle una foto de cerca me doy cuenta de que se encuentra un poco abandonada, por lo que imagino que la iglesia esté cerrada por la misma razón.

En este reparto abunda la vegetación, que en esta época es exuberante y llena de verdor. Los grandes árboles que se encuentran en las aceras brindan una sombra que se agradece mucho, especialmente cuando el sol logra salir de entre las nubes. Y es precisamente esta mezcla de frescura, silencio y naturaleza lo que convierte al recorrido en una experiencia agradable. Además de la iglesia y la vegetación, me gustó la tranquilidad del barrio, no se escuchan muchos autos ni el bullicio típico de otras zonas más céntricas.

Esta caminata ademas de productiva ya que pude realizar mi gestión, me sirvio tambien para darme cuenta que incluso en medio de las dificultades cotidianas siempre hay espacios para disfrutar de la paz y la belleza del entorno. Y eso sin duda es lo que vale la pena compartir aquí.
