A Black hole with a “hiccup attack”.

A Black hole with a “hiccup attack”.

We already knew that black holes are strange, but what they have discovered now goes up one more step in the level of strangeness, an international team of astronomers from the United States, specifically from MIT, Italy, the Czech Republic and other nations have discovered that a black hole that was previously silent became active in a very strange way, in fact, it has been described as a “hiccup attack.”

This black hole erupted every 8 and a half days and then returned to its normal and calm state. Periodic eruptions are a new behavior that until now had not been observed in black holes. Scientists believe that the most possible explanation for these outbursts is violent comes from the existence of a second, smaller black hole that would be buzzing around the central supermassive black hole and that throws material from the gas disk of the larger black hole every 8 and a half days.

The black hole is located in a galaxy about 800 million light years away, it has a mass of about 50 million suns that is 12 times larger than the supermassive black hole in our galaxy called Sagittarius A star, the other black hole the smallest and which is orbiting the supermassive black hole, would have a mass of between 100 to 10,000 suns.

This discovery is revolutionary, since it changes the image we have of accretion disks. Here we must explain that nothing comes out of a black hole and we do not know exactly what happens inside, but we can study what happens in its environment; accretion disks are formed by matter that orbits the black hole before passing through the event horizon or event horizon.

This matter spins at relativistic speeds, which causes a large amount of energy and astonishing phenomena at the limits of the science we know. Some of these phenomena we still do not understand well, since in the environment of a black hole the tissue is distorted. of space-time.

This finding means that there may be more things in the accretion disk than simply a mush of atoms at high temperature. It seems that there may also be other black holes, there may even be entire stars. The burst of activity that this study talks about occurred in 2020 and it could be according to researchers that a star came too close to the supermassive black hole and was destroyed for 4 months. The main black hole fed on the remains of this star, while the second smaller black hole orbited the large, expelling larger-than-usual plumes of gas each time it passed through the accretion disk.

That's how violent and brutal the universe can be, the end of that star was not elegant at all, the spectacle had to be more like the splash of two piranhas devouring a bird that landed on the water.
