This type of propulsion achieves high thrust weight similar to chemical propulsion, but with two to five times greater efficiency using systems that are faster and smaller than electrical and chemical systems respectively.

These propulsion capabilities will allow the US to enhance its interests in space and expand the possibilities of NASA's long-duration human spaceflight missions.

D.R.A.C.O. The first phase began more than two years ago, at which time DARPA selected a preliminary design for a thermonuclear rocket motor reactor developed by the General Atomics company, and also selected two designs for the spacecraft that would carry it.

One design would be The Blue Origin, the space company of tycoon Jeff Bezos, and another design would be the Lockheed Martin, the ship should be able to travel from the earth to the moon, which confirms the strategic importance that the moon will have in the coming years. years, but the development of these engines could also help shorten human journeys to Mars, which with current technology would take about three years, however, with a nuclear-fired rocket engine, the journey could be reduced to two years, which it also means reducing equipment costs and avoiding possible risks to astronauts.
