Europe's first rover on Mars

Europe's first rover on Mars

Souce

The European Space Agency in collaboration with Airbus is developing a landing model and a next-generation rover with a single objective to discover if Mars ever hosted life, named Rosalind Franklin in honor of the scientist who helped reveal the structure of DNA, the Rover will be the first in Europe to literally explore Mars in depth.

With a 2-meter drilling system they will collect samples protected from radiation and extreme cold, increasing the chances of finding signs of fossilized microscopic life, but keeping a robot running and a hostile environment like Mars requires a reliable energy source, which is why the Rover will use radioisotope heating units, based on Americium 241, a radioactive material that generates heat and electricity safely and constantly.

The mission is risky, landing on Mars is never easy, Airbus under the contract of Thales Alenia Space (TAS) is developing the thermal, mechanical and propulsion systems of the landing module, during the descent a powerful braking system will guarantee that the rover touches the ground safely, then two ramps will be deployed allowing the Rosalind Franklin to descend from the module in a controlled manner, beginning its journey through the Martian landscape, it is very high precision robotics putting autonomous navigation, AI and engineering thermal.

After landing, the rover will be able to operate independently with a new autonomous software mode, developed to deal with unforeseen terrain and delays in communication with the earth. On board it has a PEM Cam camera system developed in the United Kingdom and an infrared spectrometer to detect rocks that may contain biological traces.

These sensors will analyze texture, color, chemical and mineral composition, guiding the rover to the best sites to drill. If everything goes as planned, in 2028 a European robot will be able to find traces of life on another planet; Could it be that we are about to answer one of humanity's oldest questions: are we alone in the universe? or it will be the silence of Mars, it will be another reminder that life is an anomaly of our world.

It's admirable that Europe is in the race for space and not all press focused on only Spacex and Blue Origin

Europe has to get its act together, it is falling behind, India, Japan, China and more USA are increasing the gap.

That's the sad truth. If not they will keep lagging behind
