China has opened the largest and deepest laboratory in the world to try to hunt for dark matter. In reality, it is an expansion of a laboratory that was built in 2010, but the expansion is impressive, it is as if they had injected it with supersoldier serum.
The current facility extends over more than 100 hectares and is located about 2,300 meters underground, it is located in the province of Sichuan, the center has been named China Jinping Underground Laboratory 2 (CJPL), its dimensions and depth break with the record held until now by the Gran Sasso national laboratory in Italy.
Dark “matter” is called a type of “matter” that would make up 85 percent of all the matter in the universe. I say matter, but I put it in quotes, because it does not look like normal matter, the matter with the that we, stones, planets and stars are made of, dark matter does not interact with the rest of matter.
Right now we could be being crossed by billions of dark antimatter particles and it would not affect us in any way, but we know that it exists because they exert gravity on a large scale, potentially altering the movement of entire galaxies.
If dark matter does not interact with anything, how can we capture it? For this, there is a theory that states that some dark matter particles could interact very weakly with normal matter particles, but to capture them, scientists must avoid contamination from any radiation. especially that of cosmic rays and this is the reason why they have installed this very deep laboratory, although the Chinese not only hope to hunt dark matter they also plan to do other various astrophysics experiments.
